Back to the Stone Age 2
Travelers in Northern China was caught off-guard by a 100 kilometer traffic jam. Cars and trucks have been stranded on the Beijing-Tibet Expressway thanks to road repairs. Officials hope for the situation to improve by September, as they hire more workers to finish the construction.
The highway system of America were planned by President Eisenhower in the 1950s. As a young officer Ike had participated in the 1919 Transcontinental Motor Convoy. A military convoy traveled from Washington to San Francisco to test the nation's ability to overland troops from the East Coast to the Pacific. The journey lasted two months without experiencing any congestion since there were no real roads past the western terminus of the Lincoln Highway in Illinois.
The present interstate system consists of over 46,000 miles of multi-lane highways, however the roads have been neglected for years and President Obama has proposed a $50 billion improvement to both the highways and railroads to provide jobs and bolster the infrastructure.
Congressional approval is necessary and GOP lawmakers were quick to show any enthusiasm for a bi-partisan bill which would be financed by a government-run bank. Spending for the masses symbolizes socialism to those congressmen intent on saving the Bush tax breaks for the super-rich. The bill is estimated to cost over $60 billion a year for the next six years. Approximately $350 billion in total. Less than half of the Bush Tax Cut and seven months of the Iraq War.
"Stimulus deja vu." Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia, the House Republican whip, criticized the bill as “Yet another government stimulus effort."
Socialist Bastards.
Fuck the roads.
What America buy SUVs for, if not bad roads.
Or to make the drivers not look so fat.
