The 12/26 snowstorm paralyzed New York City. 24 inches of white was too much for the sanitation workers to handle. Streets and avenues in every borough were clogged by drifts. Plow crews were overwhelmed by the workload. 911 was besieged by emergency calls. The media accused the mayor of failure bordering on GW Bush's response to Hurricane Katrina and the citizenry demanded a head to be placed under the guillotine of public opinion.
No one was fast to admit a mistake.
The massive clean-up was slow in coming, however by weekend Times Square was ready for the dropping of the New Year's Eve ball and the mayor had promised an investigation into the snafu. January 1 was warm. Snow crews were plowing bus stops. The shovel crews were clearing intersection. the night's rain diminished the mountains of snow. In the morning the temperature was nearing 50.
The Xmas blizzard of 2010 had surrendered its grip on New York City.
We were free again to complain about other issues and the Daily News was fast to headline the lack of trash collection.
If it isn't one thing, then it's another ten.
