Playing With Fire

January 1, 2014 My young friends sometimes complain that these times are no fun.

Gwen O'Neils' comrades aren't like that.

To quote the band ART, "Our fun begins where other peoples' fun ends.

And they know how to play it safe too.

Notice the plastic cup filled with something.

Opps, I guess it was gasoline.

Burn baby burn.

Of course the best song for this is PLAY WITH FIRE.

Pyromania never goes out of fashion.

Amagansett

Amangansett is the last beach community on Long Island before Montauk.

The European community was established in 1630.

Amagansett derives its name from the Montaukett name for "place of good water" from a water source near what today is Indian Wells beach.

Long Island was formed from the sediment of the glaciers of the last Ice Age.

Montauk had been an island.

Napeague connects the two.

The year-round population is mostly white.

Lou Reed from the Velvet Underground died there in 2013

It's a good place for a swim.

Never-Ending Winter

Never-Ending Winter

Last night I went to sleep at on the top floor of the Fort Greene Observatory. I was wearing a cotton night gown and my cover was a double blanket. The cold seeped through the windows and a little past 3am I woke to a chill. The outside temperature was wavering in the teens. This winter was breaking records all across America.

I got up and grabbed a Hudson Point blanket from the closet. The Haida Indians of the tundra called them Baahlaads gyaa'adaay. The wool covers were valued trade items for fur, because they were easier to sew than a bison skin.

It was warm.

I fell asleep dreaming of Thailand and my kids.

I woke to a cold dawn.

Winter wasn't leaving any time soon.
