Queen Elizabeth II was honored by a Silver Jubilee in 1977. While most of the English were glad to celebrate their sovereign's 25th year on the throne, the country was in a terrible state with the war in Occupied Ireland and unemployment on the dole was the destiny of the young. it was not a happy country and a punk band released GOD SAVE THE QUEEN, which was banned from airplay by the BBC and Independent Broadcasting Authority refused to play the song. Despite this the controversial song hit # 1 on the NME on the strength of touching a revolutionary chord in the hearts of the disenfranchised youth, although according to the lead singer Johnny Rotten, "You don't write 'God Save The Queen' because you hate the English race. You write a song like that because you love them, and you're fed up with them being mistreated."
On the Jubilee holiday the band hired a boat to cruise the Thames. London police stopped them from playing the song and arrested a number of their entourage.
Johnny Rotten once more John Lydon fought against a re-release of GOD SAVE THE QUEEN, telling the press,
"I would like to very strongly distance myself from the recent stories and campaign to push 'God Save The Queen' for the number one spot. This campaign totally undermines what The Sex Pistols stood for. It is certainly not my personal plan or aim. I am proud of what The Sex Pistols achieved and always will be but this campaign totally undermines what The Sex Pistols stood for. This is not my campaign. I am pleased that the Sex Pistols recordings are being put out there for a new generation, however, I wish for no part in the circus that is being built up around it."
Fucking square only because he wasn't getting paid for the song, but he deserves it too along with the rest of the band; Paul Cook, Steve Jones, and Glen Matlock.
