Caspar David Frederick exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum
Forty-four years ago I viewed his works at the Hamburg Kunsthalle. His ice floes painting stunned me. He had never gone farther north than Copenhagen. His inspiration came from conversations with polar whalers.According to Wikipedia Contemporaries such as the French sculptor David d'Angers spoke of him as having discovered "the tragedy of landscape"
