Bad Road - Phnom Penh to Thai Border

In 2009 the Cambodian government announced the completion of over 1,082 kilometers of roads. The fragile infrastructure improvement came thanks to Chinese and South Korean investments with the national road from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville serving as the showpiece for internal travel, however the important connection between Siem Reap and the Thailand border remains to be a national disgrace.

Plans for its asphalt surfacing have long been delayed by bribes by Bangkok Air to local transportation officials, since the Thai airlines fear a dramatic drop in revenue should this dirt road becomes a regular highway connecting Bangkok with the Khmer ruins at Angkor War.

I've traveled on the road between Siem Reap and the border.

Four hours of bone-rattling ruts and holes large enough to shallow any car driven without extreme care and there's really nothing to see on this trip other than dusty rice fields withering under the tropical sun.

Of course the four-hour trip becomes ten hours with a little rain.

A hellish journey at the best of times, but as the Cambodian PM says, "When there is road, there is hope."

Hopeless this road, although still cheaper and only two hours slower than the plane.

Nik Reiter said of our journey, "At least the beer was cold."

And that says it all.

The Worst Road In The World

The North Yungas Road in Bolivia has been touted as the world's most dangerous road.

Paraguayan war prisoners cut the dirt track into jungle cliff in the 1930s.

Over two-hundred motorists died on the road in 2006.

According to Wikipedia the South Yungas Road connecting La Paz to Chulumani, 64 kilometres (40 mi) east of La Paz is considered to be nearly as dangerous as the North Road and you can see why by going to the following URL;

I Want To Know What Love Is

The BBC announced the marriage of arch-villain Rupert Murdoch of Fox News and his evil multimedia empire to former Texas model Jerry Hall, who had once been the Bali wife of Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger. It seems like a match made in the Hell, but as Fredrich Engels, co-writer of DAS KAPITAL, said, "Only money cam allow a bald man to grow hair for a beautiful woman."

Never truer than now.

How will the newly-wed couple explore love?

Only through the words of Foreigner's I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS.

We Were Such Good Friends

My mother always said that people will judge you by the company you keep.

She is more right than ever.

Enemies of the people.

All three of these villains.

Guests of Donald.

At a KKK country club.

They allow Jews, Wops, and drug dealers.

Until they don't.

There Is An I in Team

There Is An I in Team

Rhododendrons Of Nepal

In the late winter of 1968 I won a rhododendron bush from my sisters' high school south of Boston.

I didn't think much of the prize.

My father planted the bush by the driveway.

A month later light purple flowers burst from the branches. The neighborhood girls admired the rhodedendron's scintillating beauty and I proudly declared having won it in a raffle.

I was a boy with a flower in the age of the Flower Child.

The bush survived the hippies, silent majority, punks, Reaganites, harsh winters, and sweltering summers, but after my parents' sold the split-level ranch-house and left behind my rhododendron.

Several years ago I had my sister drive by the old house on Harborview Road. The new owners had renovated the old place, but the rhododendron was larger than ever.

Maybe a good ten feet tall.

But they can grow even higher.

Nepal's Solu region fifty kilometers south of Mt Everest is more meteorogically peaceful than the surrounding Himalaya valleys and the Sherpas' terraced slopes provide an ideal botanical refuge for the giant rhododendrons of Asia.

Some are reputed to be over 90 feet tall.

And the best time to view them is now.

If only I could be so unlucky.

The Trump Putsch

Yesterday Donald Trump decisively won Super Thursday by finishing first in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. Colorado has yet to complete their tabulations and Ted Cruz narrowly won Alaska's GOP primaries.

Yet none of the other candidates announced their resignation, mostly because the GOP and the Tea Party are shocked by having their political base usurped by a New Yorker with dubious roots on the right. This putsch seems all, but irreversible meaning real trouble for America, especially if some Democrats will swing to Trump to avoid a Hillary Clinton victory.

Someone has to stop this man.

Hopefully the voters of America.
