May 12, 1990 - Langtang Trek - Journal Entry

We lunch next to a roaring cataract in a small inn.

Flyblown as usual, although not as bad as the restaurant at the trailhead. We are three hours out of Syabu where we lodged last night. Lance and I are not roughing it like the foreign trekkers huffing under the weight of their packs. At $25/night we have three squares.

There are nine of us. Lance, me, Dorge, Lasabhari, the cook, Den, the second cook, and four Sherpa porters. The porters cook us a good lunch. We sip whiskey. Lance brought two bottles of Johnny Walker from Kathmandu. A great idea. Healthy pours into the cups. Whatever you consume, you don't have to carry.

The porters get a shot of whiskey at night after which they settle into smoking cigarettes and playing cards. Once the whiskey is finished it onto beer, which every tea house along with tea and Coca-Cola.

Altitude - 2400 meters
