Throughout the end of the last century tens of thousands of workers had been employed in the Indiana mills and ancillary jobs of supply and service. I recall driving through Gary past midnight in 1973. The flames of the blast furnaces lit the night sky. O ver the ensuing decades jobs had been shipped out of the country to cut labor costs. Innovations erased more jobs were lost for the steel mill operators. The price of steel never went down to the consumers, yet Gary, Indiana retained approximately over 3,000 steel workers paid union wages.
Earlier this year US Steel announced that the Gary Tin Mill, which had been shut down in 2022 and laid off 224 workers, will re-ope opening in 2027. US Steel offers positions to fill 227 slots at $49,000 a year or $23/hour, which is a liveable salary in Indiana, thanks to a suit file by US Steel and the Steel Union to stop cheap oversea imports. While a few hunred slots jobs ain't even close to tens of thousands of positions lost from the Rust Belt. Trump's last foray into Gary had been an attempt to open a casino riverboat on Lake Erie. It went nowhere. Hopefully Gary Tin Mill will florish in the years to come.
