May Day Freedom From Chains 2011

May Day 2011 and I was sitting in a Tokyo Airport bound for Bangkok. A two week unpaid holiday, since Manny decided to stiff my vacation pay. The eighty- three year-old diamond dealer said, “I gave one week off in January.”

“You gave me butkis then.” I had been a math major in college and still had a very good head for numbers.

“I remember one week.”

“Because you want to remember one week. You’re wrong, but then bosses are never wrong these days.” Manny was an old curmudgeon, but I had counted on him for a job since 1989.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“That you fire two employees and had me work harder without giving me a raise.”

"You're lucky you have a job."

He was right in some ways, only because everyone around the world was a wage slave grinding out a subsistent living.

Years ago unions protected the workers. The bosses fought the forty-hour week, the end to child labor, and other workers’s rights as was to expected from the filthy rich, since they represent the haves, who don’t want to spit to the have-nots. I hung up saying to Manny, "See you when you get back." then muttered,

"Fuck the rich."

I have belonged to three unions; IBEW for the telephone company, IBT driving taxi in Boston, and the union of drifters. I believe in the power of labor and every May 1 workers of the world march in many countries.

Originally the day was a pagan holiday for the first day of spring, although in a different month than the present Julian calendar. Peasants adherents to the old religions danced around the Maypole. The Catholic Church suppressed the practice by naming May the month of Mary, the Blessed Virgin.

As a child at parochial school the nuns paraded us around the church with the girls wearing white dresses and flowers in their hair. The boys had white jackets and slacks. Parents would take snapshots of their angelic children.

Years later we abandoned this pious procession to march in the May Day protests against the Cambodian Bombings.

1969-1970.

Washington, Kent State, Kissinger, Nixon talking to the protesters.

May Day for the Left honors seven Haymarket anarchists executed for participation in Chicago’s Haymarket Riot of 1886 in Chicago.

May 1 1886 was the start date for the 8-hour day. Big business wasn’t happy with this new law and workers staged a series of protests. Anarchists met in Haymarket Square. The gathering was peaceful until someone threw a bomb into the police ranks, killing one officer. In the ensuing violence more died on both sides.

Hence ‘bombing-throwing anarchist’ entered the American lexicon.

The subsequent trial of eight anarchists based the accusations on hearsay. Evidence revealing the involvement of the Pinkerton Detective Agency in the bombing didn’t prevent the death sentence for seven of the accused.

Public pressure for leniency forced the governor of Illinois to commute the capital charges against two ‘conspirators’.

On the eve of the execution Louis Lingg offed himself by exploding a dynamite cap in his mouth.

The remaining four, Spies, Parsons, Fischer, and Engel were publicly hung, but not before they sang the Marseillaise, the anthem of the international revolutionary movement.

All eight were exonerated in 1893 and May 1 became a rally day for labor throughout the world, although in the USA it is called Loyalty Day.

Thailand gives the day off to workers, 70% who have decent jobs say they are happy with their present situation. Others are less so.

In honor of the Haymarket martyrs I’m taking the day off too.

Power to the people.

One more thing.

Fuck the rich.

Long Love The West End of Boston

The West End of Boston had been developed for the rich. The neighborhood also sheltered freed blacks, who bravely served in the Civil War. The waves of Armenians, Greeks, Irish, Lebanese, Italians, Jews, Lithuanians, Poles, Russians, Syrians, and Ukrainians emigrants pushed out the wealthy, creating a ethnic haven for one and all.

The Ward 8 boss, Martin Lomasney, aka 'the Mathama' protected the people, especially the Irish families, but helped all newcomers find jobs to insure their future votes. The lifelong bachelor's even-handed reign over the West End endured over forty years under his motto, "Don't write when you can talk; don't talk when you can nod your head."

The strong Jewish community centered on the Vilna Shul, whose revered double hand symbol for the Kohanim, known to Trekkies as the Vulcan salute.

At its height over 23,000 people lived in the flourishing West End, however the Brahmin landlords decided to 'deslum' the neighborhood with a grandiose development project. Resistance to this change was strong, but by the 1950s the population had shrunken to 7500 diehards without a political champion.

Tawdry Scollay Square was leveled for a new city hall designed by IM Pei.

In 19523 Mayor Hynes declared the West End's narrow streets a fire hazard without mentioning anything about the cobble-stoned lanes of Beacon Hill, bastion to the Cabots, Lodges, and Lowells.

The West End was doomed by wrecking balls fueled by greed.

The Boston Housing Authority demolished the West End with the high-explosive viciousness of Curtis Le May's Eight Army Air Force.

When nothing was left the BHA built luxury apartments for a little over 400 families.

At the end of Storrow Drive a billboard promoted the project with the sales pitch, "If you lived here, you would be home now."

Only one tenement building remains from the rage of progress.

Route 66 - Charles Brown

Full moon. A gulfstream slipping into the sky. Clipping a cloud. The silence of Round Hill Road. The mutter of a highway in the distance. Cars going nowhere, but nowhere is our destination. From one day to the next and none of the passengers listen to Charles Brown.

The Police Versus The Us

Over a year ago 19 year-old Michael Wilson was shot dead by a Ferguson Missouri police officer. Darren Wilson claimed the stocky high school senior charged at him after an altercation about walking in the middle of a street. Darren Wilson was cleared of any charges by a grand jury setting off a firestorm of protests against cops killing unarmed black males.

This week marchers took to the streets of Ferguson and St. Louis.

The cops responded with a show of force.

They want the citizens of these towns and cities that these are their streets.

People must live by their laws.

Anyone black out of line will either be killed or arrest.

Dead or alive.

It don't matter to the pigs.

They are only following the orders of the white majority's desire to keep the slaves in their place.

Only one problem.

The filth ie the police like the White Majority are on the wrong side of history.

We shall overcome one day.

The struggle is not over with one young man's death.

Fuck the rich.

We are the power.

Welcome To Ulster 2014

Three nights ago I exited from the subway into the XXXL Mall at Atlantic Terminal. Scores of uniformed police were scattered about the shopping center. Outside on the street even more cops slunk in groups. At first I thought they were protecting the mall from any protests against years of endemic police brutality against people of color and the lower classes, however I overheard someone say, "Jay Z is hosting Prince William of England and his wife to a Nets game."

The Royals in Brooklyn.

The helicopters overhead and flatfooted men in blue were protecting the Second In Line to the Throne. Cops regarded everyone as a potential terrorist. Scorn swan in their eyes. Last week a Staten Island grand jury deemed the police innocent of murdering Eric Garner. They could kill anyone; white, black, latino, young, and old without consequence and I realized that we are living in the New Ulster.

The rich can do anything.

The poor pay with their lives.

And the cops are paid to serve and protect on class against the rest.

I hope it never comes to this.

New Ulster 2014.

No justice.

No peace.

ps the Nets suck. Go Celtics.

The Meaningless Of Knowledge

In HG Wells THE TIME MACHINE the hero travels far into the future. The Time Traveler discovered a simplistic communist society. The Eloi's every want was produced by the subterranean race of Morlocks. Denied the need to work the egalitarian eden bred ennui into the Eloi. There was no thirst for knowledge and the great library was filled with crumbling books.

Libraries have been a refuge throughout my life. I bored Shackelton's polar classic SOUTH from the one-room branch library behind my house on the South Shore. My hometown's main library had two rock records; the Mothers of Invention's FREAK OUT and the Jefferson Airplane's AFTER BATHING AT BAXTERS. During college I studied at the Boston Public Library and I am an academic member of the New York City's Main Library on Fifth Avenue. Its reading room is a treasure, even if requested books are not ordered by the Rose Reading Room's pneumatic tubes anymore, however the entire library is under threat by a new plan to move the three million books offsite.

SUSAN BERNOFSKY from the blog http://translationista.blogspot.com visited the stack from the PEN American Center on a promo tour in favor of the revovation. Library officials touted the move as a protective measure to prevent the books from rotting. The writer saw 'not a trace of rust on the sturdy and elegant Carnegie steel stacks (manufactured from a grade of steel that isn’t made anymore), and the marble floors holding up the stacks—which also structurally support the Rose Reading Room above—appeared to be in excellent shape.'

This proposed move has nothing to do with the preservation of books, but rather the retail commercialism of one of the world's greatest libraries. Stores will replace the stacks and a luxury mega-hotel will tower over Bryant Park. Community Board 5 and the Landmarks Preservation Commission are supporting the renovation, which will cost the taxpayers at least $150 million to benefit the rich. Ex-Mayor Bloomberg's Office of Environmental Coordination declared that the project would have no negative environmental impact on the library.

In contrast those opposed to the plan cite many obstacles not mentioned in the NYPL's proposal, which has been proceeding without any consultation with the city council or subject to public hearings.

The 5th Avenue Library belongs to the people of New York and the world.

Email the Mayor.

DeBlasio is supposedly one of us.

This project will gut the Main Library, whose budget has been slashed in order to grant luxury condo builders tax breaks to house absentee millionaires.

Save the library, because what they take away, they don't ever give back without a fight.

Uncool Punk

During the late-70s I often visited the Metropolitan Museum in New York. The suggested admission was $2. As a punk from CBGBs I gave nothing. That paintings on the walls belonged to rich people and the antiquities had been stolen from around the world. My favorite paintings were el Greco's VIEW OF TOLEDO and Thomas Cole's THE OXBOW. After studying the art I had lunch in the dolphin fountain cafeteria. The food was bland, but a glass of wine was cheap. This week superstars Beyoncé and Anna Wintour, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue offered the world a view of punk fashion. Hundreds of celebrities turned up for a $100,000 a head gala at the Museum on 5th Avenue. Cameron Diaz and Jessica Sara Parker were epitomes of phoneyism. Anne Hathaway less so. And Miley Cyrus was so so yes. For the most part the Rich and Famous are so uncool Unlike Debby Harry. Or Psy. Gabba Gabba Ho-Hum And no mention of Johnny Thunders, X, or Sham 69. Fuck you all.
