Joyous Valentine for UK Teenagers

I can't believe Hollywood came out with another FRIDAY THE 13TH.

I'm sure the teenage heroine doesn't call the police at the first sign of trouble or use a condom like this 13 year-old boy. Thankfully someone will heed the tenets of the Holy Roman Church and just scream.

The baby's name is Maise.

At least they didn't name her Damiene.

Pursuit of Higher Education UK

My sister-in-law regards me as a ne'er-do-well. She’s not far off the mark, I've led a prodigal's life, while she has worked for the CIA under George Bush and led a an exemplary suburban life as a working mother and wife. My brother and she have raised two good kids. Smarter than me and this Spring her son applied to the top Ivy Colleges.

With great grades, outstanding SATs, and a well-rounded extra-curricular career, my nephew seemed a lock except Harvard, Yale, and the lesser universities sent rejection notices. This blanking didn't make sense and I asked his mother, "Why didn't you call George Bush to get him into Yale?"

"I couldn't do that." She had scruples as an honest accountant.

"Maybe you can't, but I can call someone." A Palm Beach friend had bought Penn a medical wing. It was worth a shot and I said, "I'll make a phone call."

"Anything will help." Her voice revealed that she hadn't much hope.

"You never know." I couldn't promise anything, however a week later my nephew was accepted into Penn's pre-med program. My sister-in-law was grateful, although I was a little surprised at her saying, "You must be good sex."

Sometimes I am, although not in this case.

The Palm Beach heiress was strictly a friend, and my friends scratch each other's backs when necessary wthout explanation to the rest of the world.

Straight and narrow people don't understand our lives, especially since the following are the questions school kids face when trying to get into school in the UK.

For the unaware, there is a slight difference between private schools and comprehensives in Britain.

The Department of Education has realised this and has revised the secondary Maths Exam papers accordingly.

Attached are the most recent maths exam papers for your reference.

The Blindness Of Justice

In 2003 online postings from US soldiers working at Abu Ghraib prison showed photos of torture. The Pentagon called this an isolated incident, however the CIA had established a secret empire of prisons throughout the world for terror suspects of their 'rendition' program. "This is not representative of the 150,000 soldiers that are over here. I'd say the same thing to the American people ... Don't judge your army based on the actions of a few. Americans chose to believe their leaders, despite the condemnation of Amnesty International," said Brig. Gen Mark Kimmitt, deputy director of Coalition operations in Iraq. Military commanders punished eleven soldiers and announced an end to torture. It was all lies. Especially since most of the torture was condoned by the higher ranks of the United States Army and the Central Intelligence Agency. It was not an isolated incident and neither was the News of the World's phone hacking. The British newspaper sought headlines by tapping phones with sophisticated methods gleaned from the various spy networks of the UK and USA. This week the chief editor was found guilty of phone-hacking, but then according Al Jazeera the jury failed to arrive at a verdict on whether former News of the World editor Andy Coulson and ex-royal editor Clive Goodman were guilty of paying police officers for royal phone directories. The trial cost over $3 million. Most of the other conspirators have been acquitted of all charges and the media magnate Rupert Murdock was never charged with anything. This too was only an isolated incident. His other newspapers were innocent of any wrongdoing in the eyes of the media, who are equally guilty of the same charges and worse. Once more justice has been blinded by the news. The truth will always out. Especially for Mssr. Murdoch, who was known to have said, "Bury your mistakes." The deeper the better.

1984 Plus 29

CCTV was used instituted by Siemens AG at Test Stand VII in Peenemünde, Germany in 1942 to observe the launch of V-2 rockets according to Wikipedia. After the defeat of Nazi Germany the technology was adopted by the West to protect military and security installations. In 1973 the NYPD installed several cameras in Times Square to combat crime. In the 90s police departments expanded CCTV surveillance, however nowhere took to the Big Brotherism like Orwell's England. # 1 was in King's Lynn, Norfolk. The present number stands at 4.2 million or one for every 14 people in the Britain. Surveillance cameras blankets the country's schools, street, hospitals, prisons, sidewalks, sports venue, bars, and highways, so that a British citizen appears on TV up to 300 times a day, which the BBC reported earned the UK the dubious dishonor of being the most surveilled nation in the West. Advocates of CCTV claim that these cameras prevent crime, but there are other factors to be considered for the drop in car thefts and robberies i.e. the rising age of the population, better lighting, and a repressive political order. Most people do nothing wrong, however their guilt or innocence is determined by police watchers. On July 22, 2005, Jean Charles de Menezes was shot dead by police at Stockwell tube station, who feared he was carrying a bomb. He had nothing in his bag and according to brother Giovani Menezes, "The film showed that Jean did not have suspicious behavior". Opps. CCTV can prove innocence as well as guilt, but never to a legal system which regards its citizens as the enemy.

The Price of Time

For years I have heard people say, "If you can't do the time, then don't do the crime." This stupid saying only pertains to poor people and sloppy criminals, since they can't afford a good lawyer to get them off with a slap on the wrist or delay the proceedings until the court settles for a lesser offense. Still I do believe that if you commit a crime, then you know that one day you might be caught for said crime to face the music. Wikileaks' Julian Assange is a hero to millions of anti-establishment for leaking millions of classified documents from governments and corporations involved in wrong-doings around the world, but in 2010 the Australian hacker was arrested for the rape of two woman companions in Sweden. Assange has been fighting extradition from the UK on the grounds that these charges are a ploy to get him back to Sweden, so he can be flown to the USA, where he will face espionage charges for the Private Bradley affair. Two days ago Assange entered the Ecuadorian embassy in London seeking political asylum. To his mind none of his actions have been a crime. One thing for certain the Australian journalist doesn't want to pay the time. Judges love to hear a defendant say, "I did nothing wrong." Few statements sound more guilty than that.

Adios Los Falklands

Los Islas Malvindas are 250 nautical miles from the Argentinean Coast. The distance between Port Stanley and London is approximately 8000 miles. My friend, Vanessa, represented the Falklanders in the UN. Her duties required two annual trips to that remote South Atlantic archipelego. The voyage was a grueling 40 hours from New York via Chile, since Argentina has banned any flights from the mainland to that contested territory.

In the winter of 1982 a crew of Argentine junk dealers were hired to scrap a whaling station on South Georgia. One drunken night a welder raised the Argentine flag over the wreckage without any comment from the natives. The military government in Beunos Aires seized on this incident to invade the Falklands, figuring to bolster support for their unpopular regime. Thousands enlisted in the army. Troops were committed to the defense of the Las Malvinas. The British Navy sailed from england. Ships were sunk. Planes shot down. Men died in the hundreds for a distant speck of land north of Anarctica. The British Empire retained its possession.

Those battles may soon have been in vain, for David Cameron the UK Prime Minister has announced the decommissioning of the aircraft carrier ROYAL OAK leaving England without a naval striking force for several years. This gap could easily be exploited by the Gauchos, since the Falklands are defended by a company of paratroopers. Tough, but too small a force to defeat an invasion.

So it's adios los Falklands.

And then Ulster.

And then the Jersey Islands.

Until it's Lesser Britain.
