The Thai Anti-Midas Touch 2014

One of the most beautiful girls I have ever seen in Pattaya was Ann. Her beauty lasted longer than most, as she bathed in the fountain of youth created by her countless sponsors’ generous donation of cash and clothing. The veteran mistress managed these farangs with the skill of a circus juggler yet she was always broke, for beauty has its costs.

Several years ago one night at the Marine Disco a French marine asked Ann to go home. Her refusal evoked an expletive in his native language. Ann had had many frog beaus in her career and told the dejected garlic-eater, “Fuck ta mère.”

The Frenchman reacted to this insult to his mother by throwing a glass of beer in Ann’s face. The impact shattered the glass and a shard tore an inch scar behind her jaw. Blood splattered on the dance floor. Ann was taken to the hospital. Angry Thais wanted to kill the farang. The police arrested him. The chief inspector said that he was looking at 6 months in jail, but after coming out of the hospital Ann settled for 500,000 baht plus medical cost to drop charges. After the French marine paid the money, he was freed from the monkey house with a warning to be nicer to young girls.

Ann's scar was no threat to her beauty. Friends congratulated her good luck. The police took their cut on the action leaving Ann with about 400,000 baht.

The average annual income in Ann's Isaan village is about 60,000 baht. If she retired to Bannok, that money could last years, but Ann was too young to quit the game, so she sent home 50,000 and spent his punitive reward in less than a week.

10 baht of gold = 100K.

New motorcycle = 50K.

Partying for a week = 50K.

New clothes = 50K.

Lending money to friends = 50K.

Money goes quick when you’re having fun, but even Ann was surprised how fast 400K evaporated with the pedal pushed to the metal.

Jamie Parker, a man of little wisdom, heard this story of riches to rags and said, “The Midas Touch works in reverse for a Thai bargirl. Any gold they touch turns into lead, but it doesn’t matter because they think, “There’s plenty more where that went.”

Jamie was right, because a week later Ann was seeing the French marine.

They were in love.

Kwahm Lak 100%., because a girl has to live.

The roots of this need to spend is highlighted in an article from this 1928 article featured in 2bangkok.com

Bangkok, Siam… It has always been a moot question in all minds as to why people of Siam are never over-burdened with riches. Now the answer comes in the form of a series of pictures which demonstrates in graphic way how surplus riches of the people are disposed of. When a man of Siam thinks he’s too wealthy to go to heaven he promptly goes out and purchases as much food, clothing, fruit, etc. as will relieve him of his surplus money. He then mounts a high platform built for the express purpose and throws his gifts down to members of the poorer class below. Since all have a right to the food and clothing offered a merry battle goes on for possession of the offerings. Hooks are even made which might tend to give the seeker a better chance to make a good haul. However, before the foodstuffs and clothing are given away, prayers and praises to the king of the devil or “Phya Yomaraj” are sung. The prayers insure the donors of recognition when they dies and are led before the king of the devil for entrance to heaven. After the prayers are said and the food distributed, the huge image is burnt, and residents of Siam must wait until they pile up more coin of the realm before they can stage another similar celebration.

This article was published by a Thai newspaper in October 23, 1928.

Easy come, easy go.

Something things stay the same and the same is sometimes good.

THE PRICE OF PURITY by Peter Nolan Smith

Ten years ago during the monsoon season a biblical deluge swept the sois of Pattaya. refuge from an early evening deluge in a very ordinary beer bar off Pattaya's Soi Excite. I parked my motor scooter under an awning a very ordinary beer bar off Soi Excite and scooted for shelter. The rain cascaded off the roof like a curtain of water. No one could see in or out.

The girls at the Jeddi Bar were older and fatter than any establishment in the Last Babylon. Their cosmetic masquerade failed to hide their disdain for the old geezers at the bar. Most of the farangs were over 70 and these old veterans nursed their beers with practiced misery. The atmosphere was overwhelmingly depressing enough for me to contemplating returning to the rain.

The door to the ladies room opened for a sight for sore eyes. A 20 year-old sex goddess in a pink skimpy tube top and red hot pants emerged from the toilet and surveyed the bar for victims. Her dusky eyes found no takers until falling on me. At 55 I was younger than the other beer-drinkers by 15 years. She sauntered up to me and asked with a hush, "You buy me drink?"

"Whatever you want?" I had seen this vixen before on Walking Street. She had been the star performer at a popular go-go bar's lesbian and S & M show. Sam Royalle said her bar fine was 1500 baht and short-time cost 3000. Way out of my price range.

"Tequila?" She led me to the bar. Each step in synch with the pop song on the stereo. Her sinuous body had been created to defy the music of a snake-charmer. The ancients would have labeled her a succubus on a mission to have intercourse with men. Repeated intercourse with this female dream demon sapped a man's body and soul to the brink of death.

I was in no condition to resist her charms and we eliminated the usual chit-chat about origin, work, and romance within seconds. Her name was Nathalee. I was right about her age. She had been dancing since she was 15. We clinked glasses and Nathalee downed her drink like she had just been ransomed after a year's imprisonment by the Taliban.

Natalee was sexy in a beach resort whose commerce revolved around sex. Her piercings and tattoos telegraphed a clear message to the male contingent of Pattaya that she was on the game and if they wanted to play then they had to pay. Riding her had to be like driving a Ferrari on ice and a man's skill levels had to be honed to a professional level.

If they weren't, Natalee didn't mind as long the customer or kak paid his way

My history was short and sweet. American writer, 55, and single. I gave my name as James. Pattaya was a good town in which to use an alias.

"James Steele." I was alone in Pattaya. My wife had abandoned me for a Thai lover in Ban Nok. My resistance to temptation was weak.

"Like James Bond. 007." Her hand hovered a millimeter over my skin. My flesh tingled with want. Her teachers had instructed an excellent student.

"More 0069." Succubus derived from the Latin word succubare "to lie under". This Lilith believed in more positions than missionary. Most of them mercenary.

"I like that." A serpent's tongue flittered over her glittering lipstick. "I like everything.

"I've seen you before. On the stage of a go-go bar."

"And you thought I was sexy."

"You were much more than sexy." I had caught her act on several occasion. She was no fake and his devotion to the exotic dancing earned top dollar for the owners. "What are you doing here?"

I ordered a beer and bought Nathalee another tequila.

"I have too many boyfriends in town. They have fight in Walking Street. I not want trouble. Maybe only trouble with you." She looked at the rain. "We go short-time? Have good room. I show you good time."

"I'd like too, but I have no money." I only went out of the house with 1000 baht. The bar bill was already 300 baht and this dump's bar fine was at least 200 baht. "Only 500 baht."

"Oh. Too bad I like you." Without a reward awaiting her sexual favors Nathalee shut down her powers. There was no sense wasting them on me. "I not always like this."

"I know. Everyone was a young once." I had spent a week at a seminary in my youth. My mother had prayed for a priest in the family. I had failed her, but for some reason people sensed his wishes for my devotion and confessed their sins to me for some form of absolution. Nathalee was in need of penance. Everyone in Pattaya was a sinner.

"I came here I 15. My mother work bar." She downed the shot and signaled for a beer chaser. She let out her breath and the taut belly pouted with seduction.

"You don't need to tell me this."

"Tell you. Not tell you. Same." Her hand rubbed an eye, as if a spot of dust was under the lid. "I see you before too. Have lady say you speak Thai. Have girlfriend and baby. She leave you for Thai man."

"You heard this story." I didn't tell it to anyone but Sam Royalle and the Brit knew how to hold his sand.

"Pattaya small town. Ladies pood mak." It was a good city for gossip.

"I've heard your story before. Girl comes to Pattaya. Has boyfriend. Boyfriend leaves her. She works bar. Can't love anyone but me."

"Not same story me. 15 not have boyfriend. My mother she not care me. Only care money. 15 she want sell me."

"And you were a virgin?"

"Never kiss a boy." Her hand moved higher on my thigh. "I very Borisut."

"So why you want to have sex?"

"Not me. Maih." Natalie swung between pidgin and perfect English. She had lived in the UK twice and Sweden once. "Maih need money to pay mafia. She like play card. Have old man come to house. He give mother 5000 baht. Not hurt he know how to make love to virgin. I not like the first time. Second time too. After that. Love it all the time. You want me show you?"

"Sorry, I not have money." Speaking bad English was contagious.

"I not care money." A Thai daughter has to obey her mother. No matter what. No explanation necessary. "Only want good man one time."

"Sorry." Nathalee was once a good girl and I didn't throw any rocks at her, for I'd only hear the breaking windows of my glass house. I wondered how many times she had told this story to a customer. Certainly more than once considering how sad I felt after hearing her confession.

"Sorry for what." She was resigned to my refusal. "I go with many man. Sometimes good to not go with man. We be friend. Good idea?"

"Good idea." I had survived my encounter with a succubus, but I recalled reading an explanation how some scientist considered the legend of a succubus to be a sign of alien abduction. I doubted it, since ETs never asked for a barfine.

"Here's a tip." I gave her 300 baht. Her story was worth more, but I wanted a pizza from Scoby's on Sai 3. It cost 150 baht.

"Now I go with old man. Easy money. Only worry they die on me."

"Anyone come close?" Viagra, 60 year-old, and a young succubus was a fatal combination in Pattaya.

"No, but sometimes think man will die." She puffed out her cheeks. "Luat-keung-nah."

"Blood makes their face go red." I waved for my check-bin.

"Like red light." Natalie doesn't want me to leave. Not without her. Rain was letting up. "You want virgin. I play virgin for you."

"Wish I could." I wasn't ready for Nathalee. My heart was dust.

"Mai penh rai." She wai-ed gracefully as a 12 year-old tradition dancer and said, "You run, but you no can hide. One day I show you my pierced clit.”

"I'm sure you will."

I escaped home. My empty house will never know how hard I try to be good.

Only my soul.

LOVE YOU LONG TIME - CHAPTER 3 by Peter Nolan Smith

In the 1990s the Christmas rush in New York's Diamond District consisted of six weeks of working 9:15 to 6 without a day off. My needs were simple and I banked almost every dollar from my diamond sale commissions and weekly salary at Richie’s exchange. By Christmas I had saved more than enough for six months in Asia including my flight. When I announced my departure on New Year’s Eve, Richie asked at a party on West 18th Street, “Is this how it’s going to be? You work six months and then take off?”

“It seems like a good plan.” The jewelry business died in the winter.

“You're a great salesman. We’ll be here when you get back. So will your. Good luck.”

This time I flew east from New York. The first stop was London, where I ran into Toby at a Chelsea bar. He was entertaining art dealers from his auction house. We greeted each other with a hug and saddled up to the bar where I posed a discreet question, “What’s happening with Chiang Mai Arts Center?”

“Sssssh. Six months ago I came here to clear up some banking details. When I returned, the guesthouse had been sold and my girlfriend had run off with the gardener, who was supposedly her brother. End of story. I learned my lesson. Don’t fall in love with a Thai girl.”

“Ever?”

“Magic runs in their blood.”

“Magic?” Senora Adorno's hex has lost none of its power. I hadn't touched a woman in this city.

“You don’t believe me?”

“I do. I’m no stranger to magic and love potions.”

I gave him the hundred words or less version of Mrs. Adorno’s curse.

“Witches are nasty. They make love potions that will make you crazy and do crazy things. Things you’d never do with a western girl. I lost everything I had there and still wanted her back. People wanted to know why, but I can’t even explain it to myself.”

“So no more Thailand.”

“I’m back with my wife. She's a safe love for a man my age. You be careful out there.”

Toby tightened his tie and rejoined his clients. His story came as no surprise and I vowed to never succumb to such a weakness.

In Bangkok I booked into the Malaysia Hotel and visited Kenny. Not much had changed at his place, except he explained that Pong had gone to Germany. Kenny said, “He a nice man.”

“If she calls, tell her I asked for her.”

That evening I phoned Michael down in Pattaya. He invited to holiday in the south at his beach house in Jomtien. I had no idea what to expect, but knew that backpackers avoided the beach resort’s wickedness to avoid seeing a fat German sunbathing with two tiny Thai girls.

After a three hours bus ride I arrived at his house by motorsai taxi. The Frenchman was living with his lovely daughter and a Thai woman with their baby daughter, Lek. He was 54. Porn was 34. The age difference coupled with the cultural gap fed vicious argument and Emilie and I escaped to a beach restaurant with Lek. The waiter came with a smile. It was low season. We were money. Emilie had a coke and I ordered a Singha beer. The baby sucked on milk

"You want to swim?"p>The ten-year old shook her head and led me by the hand across a beach was strewn with plastic to a murky sea.

"No one comes here for the beach."

"I can see why."

After that evening's dinner Michael and I drank Cote du Rhone and played backgammon. Mosquitos buzzed around our feet. Porn watch Thai soaps. At the end of the night I said, "I have to get a hotel."

“Why stay at a hotel when you stay here for free? Porn and I don't fight every day.”

I doubted that, but accepted his offer and settled into a second-floor room overlooking a field of jungle grass.

Dawn painted the fields with a golden glow and I sat at a table to begin a novel about a XXX movie star in North Hollywood base on my cousin Sherri. Michael and Porn hit bed early. I went to Walking Street. The bars were filled with women. Some of them were beautiful. One night I brought a girl back. In the morning Michael warned, “This is my home. Not a brothel.”

Okay, I understand."

His admonishment was deserved, considering his wife didn’t approve of having a guest. I should have left, but liked taking care of their baby daughter. Porn would disappear for most of the day and miraculously arrive a half-hour before her husband’s arrival.

I thought about telling Michael, but her wife’s absences were none of my business.

He dealt in sapphires and rubies.

I asked him for a job.

“Sorry, but I have trouble paying my own salary.”

“No problem, if I didn’t ask, I wouldn’t know.”

After dinner we drink whiskey and once the house was asleep I ventured across the hill to Walking Street. The sex emporium was wide open to everyone, farangs and Thais alike. Go-go girls begged me to take them home, dying for a night off their feet. I tipped them $5 and returned to Michael’s house.

I didn’t sleep long.

The door opened and a man stood at the foot of my bed. A Japanese sword gleamed in his hands. It was Michael.

“I’m going to cut off her head.”

“Cut off her head"” Decapitation seemed a drastic measure.

“She’s seeing her ex-husband. A Thai man.”

“Why don’t you leave her?”

“She’ll take away my daughter.” Western men have no rights to their children in Thailand.

“If you cut off her head, you’ll go to prison.” The Thai police frowned on westerners killing Thai wives in a fit of jealousy.

Emilie entered the bedroom in tears. Michael joined his daughter. The wife didn’t show up that morning or the following day. Fearing a murderous showdown, I decided to go up north and said, “I have a train to catch. Why don’t you come with me?”

“I’ll be fine.” His eyes told a different story. “I have a business to run.”

"I call from there."

In Chiang Mai I once more rented a 250cc motorcycle from Australian Jim. I drove around the North, avoiding opium and pick-up trucks. My hands were numb from the bumpy roads. Only saunas freed my skin from the deeply ingrained dust. I rewrote my novel in a shack along the Mekong River.

When I returned to Jomtien a month later, the Thai guard said that Michael had returned to France. He had no idea what happened to his wife or daughter. I doubted the guard was telling me everything, but any form of involvement was him for bad luck.

For me too.

I returned to Bangkok and booked a room at the Malaysia. Kenny’s Bar was populated by the usual collection of drunken farangs and young girls. I told Kenny about Michael and he explained, “All Thai women fall in love with Thai man. Get marry. Maybe no marry. Have baby. Man go to see other women. Get drunk. Leave wife. After girl must take care of baby. Meet man. Same your friend. Same story. I hear all time.”

“Ever hear any happy endings?” I ordered him a drink. He liked gin.

“Happy beginning, yes. Happy middle, yes. Happy ending?” Kenny motioned for the bargirl to bring him a slice of lime. “Everyone die in end. Love too. I hear from Pong. She ask for you.”

“Tell her I said hello.” I was leaving for New York and gave Kenny a gold ring.

“Something for you to remember me.”

The ring fit his thumb and he wished me good luck. “You stay safe.”

“That's not problem in the States.”

My apartment was comfortable. I gave my agent the novel. Tony sent NORTH NORTH HOLLYWOOD to publishers and warned me to be patient. We heard nothing and I committed myself to work at the diamond exchange. It was a grind, but Richie introduced a married woman from Richmond. Mrs. Carolina was married to a country doctor. He had land. The blonde 45 year-old wanted someone to love.

“I wrote out the ten best things about you and the ten worst. The good outweighed the bad.”

“Only ten bad things?” My list was much longer.

"I threw away the small faults."

"Thanks for that."

Mrs. Adorno laughed seeing me with Ms. Carolina and stared with her evil eye.

Ms. Carolina asked about the wizened woman and I said, “She’s crazy.”

“Same as me for you.”

“Do yourself a favor and have nothing to do with that woman. She’s a witch.”

“Really?”

“Really.” Ms. Carolina visited me every month. The sex was good, but only good. Still I wasn't lonely and we traveled to Wyoming, Guatemala, Death Valley, and the Bahamas.

After months I told her, “I'm going to Asia to write.”

“And what about women?” Jealousy is a natural trait for women or men, especially if you are the loved as opposed to the lover.

“I look. Not touch.” I wasn't interested in joining Kenny's collection of Not Happy Endings. Thai women strongly believe in bad, so I steer clear of involvements with them."

“Mostly because you’re scared of love.”

“Something like that.”

After New Years, Ms. Carolina came up to New York and drove me to JFK. She cried at the departure gate.

"Away I'm twice the man as most men and I will be back. I promise."

"I wish I could believe you."

I beleve me and that's what counts most." I wiped away her tears and kissed her good-bye.

This time I flew directly to Thailand.

Bangkok served as a transit point. Cars, buses, boats, planes, and trains transported me to Asia’s ice-sheathed mountains, mossy temples, sugar sand beaches, islands floating on a gin-clear sea, and rivers swelling with monsoon rains.

I loved the feel of dirt under my boots in a distant mountain pass, however writing required a sedentary life and I sought a location meeting my prerequisites; good food, weather, and people.

The Legong dancers of Bali possessed a gracefulness to be envied by Gods. Emerald forests climbed up the jungle slopes of Sulawesi’s misty mountains. Penang served Indian, Malay, and Chinese cuisines.

I had spoke the truth to MS. Carolina and I returned to America. My youngest brother was sick with AIDS. He didn’t last long and after his death I broke up with Mrs. Carolina.

She and I remained close. Her husband became my friend. I was no longer a threat. I was on the verge of becoming a life-long bachelor and I questioned whether there was something wrong with me. Other men had women. They seemed happy. I was sad. Mrs. Adorno no longer answered the door, when I knocked on it.

Several months later my mother was diagnosed with cancer. On her death bed she admonished my avoidance of Ireland. "You have been all over the world, but never to the Emerald Isle Maybe you can find a nice woman there. Someone like your sisters or aunts.”

“I don’t know.” Her solution sounded too much like incest.

“Promise you’ll go.” A quick trip to Dublin was what I had in mind. My mother knew me well. “I want you to reconnect with your roots and not just with a pint of Guinness.”

She passed away after Christmas. Mrs. Carolina held my hand at her burial.

The next summer my father and I toured the Loire Valley. We enjoyed large meals in pleasant cafes and drank wine in caves carved in cliffs. He cried listening to Irish ballads on the car stereo. We missed my mother and spoke about how much she would have loved the chateaus.

In Paris we unexpectedly met my friend, Sam Royalle. The Londoner was a computer geek, but had become involved with a money wire transfer with a criminal organization. $200,000 had gone missing and now a gang of Brixton yardies had threatened him with grievous bodily damage, if they weren’t awarded the proceeds of his house sale.

Sam skipped a few details of the scheme and heeded my suggestion to hide out in the Orient. The Malaysia Hotel was a good starting place to disappear from sight. I went to London and cashed a check at his bank. I was a little scared, but no yardies raided the bank, while I wired him the money.

My business in the UK was done and I flew over to Dublin to fulfill my mother’s death wish. I rented a haunted old schoolhouse on the Connemara coast from a Lord and wrote a book about prostitution in Hamburg. Most of the story was based on the blonde and her pimp.

Sullen autumn rains accompanied long walks through the soggy bogs. The cow farmers at the nearest pub shared a nasty word for everyone and wondered why I wasn’t writing my novel in Germany. The women in the village were either 15 and pregnant or 40 with five kids. The house was haunted by old ghosts who whispers crawled down the dark hallways. Sam called from Bangkok. He was grateful for my advice and offered a ticket to Thailand. My funds were low. I said I would see him next year.

Back in New York I worked with Richie.

After New Years Mrs. Carolina and I skied Jackson Hole. No one was interested in publishing my books. My script based on my first novel. NORTH NORTH HOLLYWOOD was rejected by producers, directors, and one agent said, “It’s sixteen sex scenes chasing a plot.”

I counted the sex scenes.

There were five.

The rest were foreplay.

I was a failure and contemplated throwing my typewriter into the trash.

If I committed to selling diamonds, I would have car, house, maybe even a wife. 47 wasn’t too late to have kids for a man.

Sherri came to town and stayed with me. She had stopped drugs and porn films. Out in California she was attending school to get her degree in psychiatry. It was a miracle that she was alive. Even more so that she could laugh about her last lost period.

I told her about my plan to settle down. “You can’t do that”

"Why not?"

"You’re a legend.”

“Legend?” I felt more like a rumor.

“Whenever I tell people about you, they say that’s the life they want.”

“Any of them willing to switch?”

“None of them have the courage. Plus you are too fixed in your ways to be with an American woman. They want someone stable. Someone who isn’t going to threaten their security. Someone more like their father.”

“I can be all those things.”

“Maybe you can, but you wouldn’t be you.” Sherri's major was human behavior.

“Before I said I shouldn’t get involved with a Thai woman, but there’s one working at a restaurant near me. She met her husband in Thailand. They are relatively happy." I didn't mention the fighting, because everyone fights in a relationship. "She’s not a domestic person like everyone thinks of Asian woman. She has a mind of her own. She’s not a caricature, but never never really left her Thai husband 100%.”

“Where she meet her western husband?”

“In a bar. Maybe a go-go.” Sherri frowned at my answer. “She probably married your friend that to take care of her family. I can’t throw any stones at her and neither can you. None of us are saints. Not even the good are. Not until they’re dead.”

“Okay, I’ll re-open my mind to falling in love.”

I was leaving for Thailand in the spring and called Sam. He was living in Pattaya with a teenage girlfriend.

“Come on down. I have a place for you to stay.”

In my mind I constructed a palace of possibilities.

I’d meet Pong. We’d go to Pattaya. I’d write my book.

I called Kenny. He answered the phone. He didn’t recognize my voice at first. When I asked about Pong, he said, “She living in Holland now. Have new husband and a baby. Fat too. When you come? I call my sister. I have many nieces.”

“A big family.” Thais extended kinship to second cousins, friends of aunts, and schoolmates. Everyone was in the family just like the South of France. I told Kenny. “I’ll see you soon.”

Mrs. Carolina asked if she could come on this trip.

“No, but I promise to phone from Bangkok.” Her eyes misted hearing those words. I couldn’t tell her anything else. We were no longer lovers. Then again we had never been lovers.

The 26-hour plane ride to Thailand was lengthened by an unexpected delay in Japan. The hotel at Narita gave the passengers coupons for a hotel and food. I spent my dining chit on beer. The desk called at 6am. I was back at Narita at 7. We completed the journey in six hours. I got off the plane. The temperature was in the 90s. Bangkok could only get hotter.

After all it was the true Orient.

Snake Farm A Go-Go Sihanoukville

After several hours of drinking gin and tonic's at the Zig Zag bar, Roland, the manager of the Angkor Inn, suggested a night cap at the snake farm.

"Ze girls there dance with snakes." Roland is French, hence the ze instead of the.

"Lead the way." Nick was a great admirer of the exotic arts.

The Snake Farm was on a dark road. The road sign was promising.

Dancing girls. Snakes.

The place looked like someone had spent a lot of money of his go-go dream, only the Snake Farm was emptier than Phnom Penh after the victory entrance of the Khmer Rouge. Not completely. A few listless bargirls lazed on the sofas. They didn't even smile. One might have rolled her eyes.

No snakes in sight. No go-go dancing. We were the only customers.

I couldn't have been more disappointed. Nick almost cried. Roland said sorry.

We headed to his place and went to sleep with dreams of better things to come in Phnom Penh.

MENAGE A TROIS A LA THAI

Western press continually brattles on how Muslim suicide bombers are rewarded for their ultimate sacrifice with seventy-seven virgins, even though virgins are not renown for their sexual prowess and this generous gift for their ultimate sacrifice has seemed more a curse to me, then again most western men fantasize about a dirty weekend in a cheap hotel with two whores more than a full platoon of uninitiated virgins; ranging from girlfriends, mother-daughter, sisters, twins, fat girl/skinny girl, lesbians, dildos, however men rarely accomplish this goal for most women are prudes.

Having sex with a man already tests their limits, let alone messing around with a member of the same sex to satisfy a sexual maniac's warped perversions. Of course escort services in the West routinely offer this Nirvana, but the hour-long session between two hardened pros would cost a few monthly car payments in America.

Not so in Pattaya.

A farang can go into a go-go. A beautiful girl will sit on his lap. Her skin has the texture of a shaved peach. Two Viagra counteract the effects of the 15 beers drunk at a cheap beer bar. Blood flees his brain for the lower auxiliary station. Its activation is signaled by the tent pole rising under his trousers. The little exotic dancer knows what's in store for her this evening.

Five hours of hard-core sex and relentless pounding for even the most well-traveled vagina and she surprisingly offers the farang an opportunity to satisfy a long-suppressed desire.

"You want go with two ladies?"

"Want?

This retired postal worker has been dreaming of this moment since flicking through his first stroke book.

"Damn straight I want."

Normally the girl will pick out a friend, usually an aging hooker, who hasn't been barfined in months.

The farang doesn't care, because his skull is swirling in a rich soup of libido juices.

The two go-go girls invite him to the nearest short-time room, which has mirrors on the walls and ceiling. The lighting is a dim red. The girls shower the farang in a state of complete nakedness. They laugh, as they hang a towel on his member. He think it's funny too, but swears to wipe the smile off their faces.

It's show time.

He has seen thousands of menage-a-trois porno movies and now he has a chance to play movie director. The girls initiate a lesbian show, since it's better for them to play with each other than the sex-crazed farang.

Once more he doesn't care, because they are faking the right noises and his eyesight is fading in and out with the hot Viagra flashes pounding his temples.

Warning: this is a danger sign of having consumed too many 'blue boys' or Viagras.

Again he doesn't care, because if he dies, he'll die in saddle like the billionaire Nelson Rockefeller.

His patience snaps when they lay on the white sheet in a classic 69.

They look so happy.

The farang wants to be happy too.

From here on in, the scene becomes too pornographic and there's nothing really pretty about a middle-aged guy acting like a high school football quarterback wreaking havoc on the opposing team's cheerleaders.

Within thirty minutes it's over.

His heart is thumping like a gorilla is attempting to breakout of his chest and the girls are dressing to get the hell away out of the room before he demands a second act.

He pays them. They leave him the satisfied farang alone, but not too alone, because he set his mobile phone on video record and he will be able to replay his performance to friends in foreign places via the magic of the internet. He lies on the pillows and says to himself, "I'm glad I didn't go to Club Med this holiday."

And the farang says this knowing that he meant it and he hadn't meant anything for years.

Menage a trois in Pattaya.

We should all be so lucky.

O FOR FIVE by Peter Nolan Smith

Tottenham Nick and I were watching the riots in London at Maggie's Bar on Soi Concrete. The dissatisfied were burning down his local Pizza Hut. Next up was McDonalds.

"Wankers will be crying tomorrow about not having anything to eat." Nick was a Hotspurs fan. The rioters could burn down Buckingham Palace for all he cared. White Hart Lane Stadium was another matter. "England ain't England no more. Too many wankers. White, black, and the in-betweens. Can you put something else on the TV? Don't matter what."

The bargirls were more than happy to change the channel. A Thai soap opera at low volume. A trio of old-timers mumbled about their choice. Tottenham Nick gave them a snarl. They went back to drinking their beer and we continued reminiscing about the good old days in Pattaya, when your mates were bank robbers, fugitives from justice, and gamblers.

Two beers later Convict entered Maggie's covered with sweat. The mid-day sun brutalized Soi Concrete. Convict sat at the bar and ordered a whiskey and coke. The forty year-old Aussie was no beer drinker. He wasn't a convict either. Nick called all Roos 'convicts', because of the decades of penal transportation from England. The only non-convicts were the Abos and 'convicts' hated the real Australians.

Convict had attempted to bend his bloodline by joining John Hop. His career as a police officer ran off the road after he had accused his fellow Blue Meanies of corruption at a Bushie pub after drinking a slab of beer. The toe cutters at Internal Affairs wanted him for questioning. The other coppers were eager to teach him the path of righteousness. Convict was lucky to get out of the Lucky Country alive.

"How it go last night?" Nick asked pulling out a cigarette. Public smoking was banned in Pattaya. Nick felt that he could burn a fag, since his arrival in the Last Babylon predated most laws.

"Buffalo Bar, Soi 8, Walking Street. Drunk as a Pommie bastard." Some of the sweat oozing from his reddened face was excess alcohol. "But I was toeier than a Roman sandal and decided to find a Map of Tassie."

"Could you speak English, you Aussie cunt?" Nick had a fly's patience with dialects other than his native London.

"I was looking for some female company." He downed his whiskey in a single go.

"Not an impossible mission in Pattaya." Success ratio was 100-300% depending on your stamina.

"Last night was," Convict spoke in a hushed voice and signaled the skinny bartender for another drink. "I was shot down 5 times."

"Five times. You must have been pissed drunk." Nick was shocked by Convict's admission.

“Once or twice I can see, but five times.” Back in 2007 I had been told by a Phnom Penh bargirl a woman that she didn’t go with men. I had accepted her excuse with disbelief, since she had visited the upstairs recreation room with another gent earlier in the evening. It was no loss of face, although Nick had been with me and he loved retelling the story.

“The first rejection was on Soi Eight. I bought the girl a couple of drinks and then invited her back to my place. She said she had a sick aunt in town and couldn’t go.” He sipped at his whiskey with a wounded expression.

“At least she lied to make you feel better.”

“I figured I could've right this situation by going to a go-go bar on Beach Road. A cute girl was dancing naked on the stage. I asked her the same question. She said she could go short time. Went to get her things, and then disappeared with a Japanese man.”

Convict shrugged and signaled for another whiskey. The first one had gone down fast.

“That’s only because she wanted more money.” Nick never went home with go-go grips. They were more trouble than a truckload of cats.

"The girls never turn down a Jap. They pay more and come like a rabbit on crack. Working girls say only Chinese men cum faster."

“She asked for 2000 baht.”

“And you countered with 1500.” Nick and I were of the same mind, but basement bargaining for a girl’s body cut against the grain. “So this was a financial disagreement. What about #3?”

“I went to the Street behind Tony’s. There was a girl at a beer bar. She had nice eyes. I like bar girls better than go-go girls anyway.”

The trio of old-timers were surreptiously listening to Convict. This wasn't the usual bullshit story

“I bought her a drink and then after the appropriate amount of chitchat popped the question about coming back to my place to watch some movies.”

“Art films?"

Convict’s porno collection was as legendary as his museum of dildos.

“They help set the mood.” Convict smiled impishly. “She said she would love to, but she was working as the cashier. Couldn’t leave.”

“Cashiers rarely go with farangs.” I’d hit on many and gotten nowhere.

Convict agreed that he had been fooled into thinking she was into the game. “It was getting late and decided to go back to soi 8. Maybe the first one would change her mind. She wasn’t there. The mama-san said she had a sick aunt. Another girl started talking to me. I popped her the question. She said she would, but had her period. I said I didn’t care if she was on the rag.”

“Rejection #4.” Convict’s night was like my trawling the bars in Manhattan. A land of No followed by a taxi ride to an empty apartment. “But you didn’t give up.”

“No, but I had one more try in me.”

“Where?”

“I’m not saying.”

Nick had heard enough and shouted, “The last one was at home. Even his hand wouldn’t fuck him.”

The bar laughed and so did Convict. There were plenty of nights I didn’t want to go home with me after drinking myself into near-oblivion.

“No, I’m not saying who #5 was.”

The bar begged for a confession. Convict locked his lips. “I’m not saying.”

I was the only one who caught the eye of the girl behind the bar. She was missing a front tooth, but was pretty in a bony way. This bar was on Convict's way home. She smiled with a slyness betraying who was #5.

“Guess it’s over to Soi half-dozen.” Convict was headed to Pattaya’s notorious short-time bars. “No one gets shot down there.”

We wish him luck, but no one accompanied him to Soi 6.

Nick lifted his beer.

“Last thing I need is Convictitis. I get enough of that back in London.”

“And New York.” Within a month I’d be back in Manhattan. I didn’t hear any nos until then, because I was faithful to Fenway's mother and she had a headache and it’s never a good time to ask for love when Mint has one of those.

Not if I know don't want to be refused for the 5th time in a week.

NORTH NORTH HOLLYWOOD - Chapter 20 -by Peter Nolan Smith

Two seconds after the woman hung up, Sean Tempo dialed 911.

"Yes, may I help you?” the 911 operator answered within ten seconds.

Sean explained the nature of the emergency and gave the operator the woman's address. Several seconds passed in silence before the operator stated, "EMS no longer responds to that address."

"What do you mean? No longer responds?"

>"EMS has logged seven suicide attempts, four domestic violence calls, and four reports of attempted break-ins from that address in the last year. Always from the same caller. Che Chasta."

The name strummed a chord in Sean's memory.

"Which means?"

"No one will answer that call. Not the EMS, the Fire Department, or the police. Sorry."

"So what am I supposed to do?"

"Go over yourself,” the operator suggested and signed off saying, "Have a nice day."

If the State of California was abdicating its social responsibility, then he would answer this woman's plea, if only to take her to a hospital. Sean star-69ed the caller's number. The phone was busy, and he reckoned the caller had dropped it on the floor. He searched the Yellow Pages for a taxi service. A dispatcher informed him that a cab would arrive in less than five minutes and the ride over to Hollywood at this time of the afternoon would take no more than twenty-five minutes.

Sean hung up and stuck the sheets from the bed in the dryer, then plucked a real $100 bill in his pocket. He snatched a set of house keys off the kitchen counter and left the apartment. The door shut behind him. Maybe he should have left a note for the women, but every second counted in matters of life and death.

The corridor led to the elevators. The walls were unpainted sheet rock and the hallway smelled of damp concrete. Most of the doors to the other apartments had no knobs or locks. Light bulbs hung by a wire from the ceiling by a wire.

Whoever had financed this repair project had run out of money, but at least the elevator was working and Sean stepped inside the car.

When the doors opened on the ground floor, Sean ran through the dusty atrium to the waiting taxi.

He gave the driver the destination and the Sikh driver pulled out of the parking lot.

Rain bounced off the pavement of a broad boulevard lined with body, brake, and transmission shops. The lights ran in sequence to the Hollywood Freeway. Sean could barely see out the windows and cracked open the window. The driver chattered in Punjabi over the radio, as the taxi swerved through traffic. The cab narrowly missed sideswiping several trucks, although none of these close calls fazed the driver. At Highland he sliced across four lanes to the exit and slipped past the single queue of vehicles to stop abruptly at a yellow light.

Sorry, sir, there are too many policemen to burn the light." "No worries."

The driver waited out the oncoming traffic, then swerved right onto the boulevard, maintaining the speed limit until turning onto a street of sad bungalows. The taxi halted before a dull green house with an overgrown lawn. The rain had let up, but the air was thick with a cold damp.

"Just wait a few minutes." Sean opened the taxi door.

"No problem, if you give me something to hold."

"You mean like money?"

"Exactly, sir."

Sean was a little hesitant about handing the Sikh a hundred, but this woman might need a ride to the hospital, so he noted the driver's permit number and said. "I'll be right out."

"And I shall be waiting, sir." The driver held up the bill.

Sean got out of the taxi.

Several stray cats sulked through the lawn's high weeds, ignoring a crow pecking at a crumbled piece of trash. The only sound was a dog barking in he distance. People lived in these houses, but no one was walking around in this weather.

Overhead dark clouds were preparing for another downpour and a wet wind rustled through the bushes.

Sean tried the front door. It was locked. On a hunch he lifted the doormat and found a rusty key. It turned the lock.

The scent of musty mildew welcomed him into the living room. An old RCA TV was surrounded by stacks of videos and the furniture was buried under soiled clothing. The fireplace was filled with take-out containers and garbage overflowed from two trash cans. Whoever had called him earlier certainly didn't hold with cleanliness being close to godliness and he heard a phone off the hook.

"Anyone here?”

No one answered him and he studied the life-sized posters publicizing the various adult videos. They featured a big-breasted blonde surrounded by muscular men. The photo told the storyline of the movie in one word.

Gangbang.

Many men with one woman.

Sean connected the face and body with the name Che Chasta.

Six years ago he had seen her dance at the Triple Threat Theater in Times Square for ten men at the afternoon show. This had to be her place.

He pushed open the last door. The busy signal was coming from inside. The bedroom was surprisingly tidy in comparison to the rest of the house.

A video camera was pointed at the blonde woman on the bed. She was naked other than the cuffs restraining her to the bedposts. Che Chasta was in the proper position to perform her cinematic specialty, except Sean wasn't sure she was breathing. After shutting off the video camera and hanging up the phone, he touched her neck. His fingertips felt a pulse under the deathly cold skin. He tapped her face.

"Wake up."

The blonde opened her eyes and croaked, "Who are you."

"Me?" Sean stared at how her unnaturally firm breasts were stretched to a translucent thinness.

"Yes, where did you come from?" Her eyes wandered in and out of focus. A needle mark reddened the inside of her elbow. Someone else had shot her up and tied her to the bed. The video was for fetishists into sleeping women. There was an audience for every genre in porno.

"From Sherri's." He resisted touching her breasts, but undid the cuff from her wrist and then loosened the restraints on her ankles. "I came, because you sounded like you were in trouble."

"I still am.” The blonde lazily rubbed her wrists, as her eyes drifted up inside her skull. The taxi blew its horn outside.

"Who's that?"

"The taxi." The smell of woman roiling in his nostrils. His arousal felt like a betrayal of Sherri and he stepped back toward the door. Sean was not the type of man to take advantage of a woman in this condition.

Even of a porno star.

"Where you going?"

"I was going to take you to the hospital."

"No hospital." An expression of recognition passed over her face. "I know you."

"How?"

"You're the man from the highway."

"I am?"

"Yes, the man from nowhere."

"It seems to be my new name."

Che had fit in another piece in his puzzle.

He saw himself asleep in the back of a car with Lena and Che in the front seat. His mind played a dirty movie. Looking down at Che he started another. The horn blew outside. "I got to pay the driver. I'll be right back."

Sean threw a blanket over the blonde and ran to the street. The driver gave him the change and Sean handed him a $10 tip. He returned to the house and locked the door. When he entered the bedroom, the blonde said dreamily, "Funny, you showing up again."

"Why?" Sean sat on the edge of the bed.

"Just we help you that night and now you help me." The blonde actress touched his face, as if she were a blind person trying to read his features.

"So I guess we're even, but who did this to you?"

The blonde licked her parched lips.

"I'd love to tell you everything, but I need a glass of water first."

"Sure thing." Sean went into the kitchen. finding a clean glass was impossible. He washed a tea cup in the sink. When he got back to the bedroom, Che Chasta was crashed out in a distorted parody of Sleeping Beauty.

Sean rechecked her pulse.

It was stronger, but she didn't react to his touch and he surrendered to the temptation of caressing her breasts. They were as hard as they looked. His other hand fingered her soft hair. She was completely at his mercy, yet however easy as it was to think about doing it, which in many women's minds that was just as punishable as rape, he was incapable of executing the actual deed.

Sean pulled the covers over her body and unplugged the telephone, since Che needed sleep a lot more than any contact with the outside world.

Sean entered the living room and cleared off the sofa room. His body was shaking with frustration. He hadn't been with a woman in six months and nothing in the last two days suggested that this stretch of celibacy would end in the near future.

The only women he had met in Los Angeles were two lesbian lovers and a drugged sex star.

Both scenarios were promising in his fantasies, but not in reality.

He sank onto the couch and noticed the hundreds of videos scattered around the TV.

They were all X-rated.

Che was in every one.

Sean flashed Che Chasta watching these videos as Gloria Swanson had viewed her old black-and-white films in SUNSET BOULEVARD. He fought off the disturbing image, since he cast himself as William Holden, and picked out a box titled NEW PUSSY ON THE TOWN. The video dated back to the early 80s. The starlet wore her darker hair in a Farah Fawcett shag and her body mirrored the nubility of a teenager out for her first wild fling.

Sean decided to reward himself for saving her life by setting in motion a one-man Che Chasta Film Festival. He armed himself with a remote control and pressed the PLAY button for YOUNG AND BAD, which captured Che right off the pumpkin truck. None of the bearded studs were memorable, while Che demonstrated a star quality ready to blaze nova.

He fast-forwarded through the inane dialogues and the repetitive sex scenes. Hundreds of males spurted semen onto her breasts, backside, thighs, face, belly, yet never inside, for long ago someone in the porno business had decided that the money shot was more visually dramatic than the man just groaning in pleasure.

Psychologically this institutional coitus interruptus also helped the masturbating viewer regard his own onanistic orgasm as the greatest sensation a man could experience. None of it was the truth.

Somewhere in the middle of the retrospective Che Chasta's body artificially morphed the physical ideal the worshipped by brainwashed American males, though this corporeal modification thrust her into a maelstrom of more and more men and women.

Pornography was supposed to be sexy or maybe even erotic, yet Sean was unaroused, until selecting A THING CALLED LUST whose cover portrayed Che and Sherri embracing a nude statue.

They were both ten years younger and their eyes glowed with scorn for damnation. He slipped this video into the VCR and returned to the sofa, pressing the remote control's PLAY button.

The film's quality was low-grade, the dialogue worst, the lighting muddy, however the sex scenes between Che and Sherri was like watching two cougars fighting over the same kill and for the first time this evening Sean wished a time machine would transport him back in time to the two women on the TV screen.

Thwarted by temporal physics, Sean did the next best thing and undid his jeans. Part of him became Che, while his stroking hand mimicked Sherri's vagina and tightened. A lava flow surged from him with a shudder, though within seconds the fire died out and the dream was over. He was just watching a TV and zipped up his trousers, feeling emptier than ever, for there was something about the act that no longer fulfilled him. He was tired of being alone, but that was not going to change tonight or any time in the foreseeable future.

Worse was that he would have no warning, when it all went to shit, but then that fate went with his territory.

It went with the territory.

Whiskey A Go Go

I saw this poster somewhere and thought, "How cool."

The Whisky à Go-Go on the Sunset Strip was made famous by the mini-skirted DJ Rhonda Lane, who danced in a cage during Johnny Rivers's set, thus giving birth to the go go girl. The Miracles scored a 1966 hit with GOING TO A GO GO and go go bars sprung up around the country. The LA club between Clark and Hilldale launched the careers of the Byrds, Alice Cooper, Buffalo Springfield, Love, the Doors and the Mothers of Invention.

In the late-70s the Whiskey went punk with The Germs The Dogs, The Runaways, Quiet Riot, Renegade, X, Mötley Crüe and Van Halen.

While I was living in LA during the 90s, I drove by the famed Hollywood nightclub without ever stopping inside.

I hated valet parking.

Yesterday I tried calling the number on the poster.

It's still working.

Rock on.

THE END OF BABYLON by Peter Nolan Smith

Pattaya had long been recognized as the world's leading destination for sex addicts and lowlifes attracted to the sordid city on the Gulf of Siam by the countless bars, the easy women, lax enforcement of law, crooked police, rampant drug use, stunning ladyboys, and young boys. My ten years in the Last Babylon furthered my research into the darker side of life without any desire to reform a single sinner. Pattaya became home, then again everywhere is home once you buy you're first roll of toilet paper.

My friends remained men on the run from the banality of western life. Our pasts were forgotten as long as our pockets were filled with baht. We were rich men in the Orient and I thought that this anti-Eden would last forever.

Sadly my booming fake F-1 enterprise was shut down by the Thai cyber-police, who treated my crime as a misdemeanor to the annoyance of the Ferrari representatives. The cops suggested that shutting down my business was in my best interests and I complied with their wishes.

Without this income I was forced to return to the USA.

New York to be exact.

I resumed selling diamonds on 47th Street and traveled frequently to Thailand to see my children.

Both families had decamped from Pattaya. My time was split between Chai-nat and Sri racha. The allure of a go-go bar could compete with my love for Angie and Fenway, plus Mam, my son' mom, was the only woman in the world for me and she swore my fidelity wasn't the result of a magic love potion or sa-neh-haa.

"I am cute. I not need magic to make you love me."

She has that straight and I spent most of this last sojourn in Thailand with her along the Cambodian border visiting her two other children. My step-kids; Fluke and Noy call me 'papa' and I call them 'luk'. Saying they aren't my kids are fighting words and I have a short temper.

We returned to Sri Racha is a little less than four hours flat. I dropped Mam and Fenway and a cousin at our small house west of the town and headed to drop off the rental car in Pattaya.

I was six hours late and called from Sukhumvit to ask how much extra I should pay. The Thai mechanic said, "Up to you, but a small pack of beer would be nice."

400 baht and 4-pack of Leo beer was a bargain.

Pisan's repair shop abutted a shrinking swamp off Soi Bongkot. The wetland remained a haven for birds and mosquitoes. I parked the car under the makeshift awning of corrugated plastic. Pisan and his son were burning old tires. A toxic black smoke floated over the marsh. I handed the beers to Pisan and we drank talking about the old times, as his 18 year-old son tended to the mad blaze at the water's edge.

Pisan regarded the encroachment on the wasteland.

Pattaya's coconut groves had been razed to provide retirees over-seized bungalows. The corner restaurants serving spicy Isaan food had been replaced by KFCs and 7/11s. Condos shadowed the Beach Road and huge shopping malls dominated the tourist market. Babylon was falling under the onslaught of globalization, but a few places remained true to the tradition of a-tham-ma or lawlessness.

"Nothing same. Puying old now. Not beautiful. Only have farang old too or fucking Russian and dirty Arab. No fun." Pisan shook his head, thinking as much about the loss of Babylon as his youth.

Neither of us could pretend to be young anymore except with a younger woman.

"You want to meet at the Buffalo for a beer later?" We didn't drink in the bar. The stools were reserved for farangs. A warped bamboo bench along Sai Sahm was our spot.

"Sorry, I stay here. Live here. Go nowhere. For what?" He was paying 8000 baht for an elevated patch of land. His shop had no fences to protect against thieves. This was home. He even had some chickens in the back.

"Enjoy the beers." I thanked him for the rental and headed off to my tailor on Sai Song, calling several friends from the back of a baht bus.

Sam Royalle was busy with his kids up at his house on the reservoir, but Big Al and Ulf were available.

"Meet me at the Buffalo around 6."

My suit was ready.

I had an hour and a half to kill and took another baht bus to Soi 3, which was a short walk to the Welkom Inn. I had been a faithful afternoon customer for years. None of the girls in the front courtyard recognized me, although the service girls in the garden asked for my dog. I never left home without Champoo.

"She's good." Champoo was up country with my ex-wife. "How's business?"

"You look. You see what?" She pointed to the new hotels rising over the trees. "Pattaya change. Now city want family. Not want men like you."

"We're a dying breed." The tired farangs at the bar were nursing their beers like they were the last beers in the world. No one was sitting at the tables and I asked, "Has it been like this long?"

"All year." The bargirl put ice in my beer. It kept it cold. "You want lady?"

"No." Not that she believed any man could be 100% faithful in the long run. I couldn't believe it either considering the playboy nature of my younger years. Mam was running me on a long lease. She hadn't called once. I tip the bargirl and said, "Thanks for offering."

After finishing my beer I walked along the Beach Road to Soi 6, the wickedest street in town. The bars were fronted by packs of short-time girls. Not one of them caught my eye and they were more interested in stuffing food in their mouths than a single older male. I was no longer 'sexy man', but neither was anyone else. The street was dead.

A motorsai taxi driver drove me to the Buffalo.

This bar had been in business for over 20 years. It was around the corner from my old house. The girls behind the bar greeted me my name. I was not a forgotten man here. I bought a round of drinks for my old favorites; two lesbians no longer in love. I was the only farang at the bar.

Big Al showed up first and commented on my weight.

"Better watch out for your gut." Big Al tipped the scales over 300.

"I can still see my feet." My BMI was a little over the edge and I sucked in my gut. I hated looking fat to someone as big as Big Al.

"As long as you can still touch your dick, it's okay." The ex-extreme fighter had left the USA for good, although all his businesses had failed in the past two years. "Even worse my wife found out that I went short-time with someone her family knew."

"That's not good." Thais hated losing face or nah sia.

"I should have known better." He explained that his wife was more pissed at his spending money on another woman than his butterflying on her. "I calm her down, but I got to get something together."

He told me about a film project about a detective in Thailand.

"It's a long shot." Making movies require money. Big Al had none. He wasn't even drinking beer.

Ulf showed up at the bar. The German bank robber had traded Pattaya for the Philippines, but his bar had failed in Angeles City. He had returned to my old business; selling first-class motor-sport gear.

"Working bad almost killed me. Trinken, trinken, trinken." Ulf enjoyed a good time, but drinking six nights a week was a deadly pace for men like us. He had been with me the day that I met Mam. We had been toasting a fallen comrade after the temple service. Mam had smiled my way. I had been her prisoner since and happy about it too.

"A friend of mine had offered me a job running a bar here."

"And?"

"I turned him down." I wanted to reach 60. Go-go girls and drink would lead to drugs, which was a fatal combo for anyone with my vices. "For health reasons."

I excused myself from the two men to go to the bathroom. The two ex-convicts were a little alike and now reformed in their ways. I returned to the bar. Big, Rolf, and I talked about robbing banks. They used guns. Mine were only in thought.

A girl grabbed my arm.

"Where you go?" She was about 23, long-legged and beautiful.

"Home to my wife." I didn't have a watch, but I knew the clock was ticking back in Srirahca. I bid farewell to my friends.

"I'll see you in the new year."

I got back to Mam's house before 7.

She looked surprised to see me. Fenway was happy with the toy I brought him. I kissed Mam on the cheek.

"You go short-time?" She had to ask.

"Not one second." And it was the truth.

Happy to say it, but the Last Babylon is gone for me.

Same as 42nd Street, which is now a shopping mall for fat people, but it doesn't really matter, because as the Wicked Witch of the West rued as she melted at the end of THE WIZARD OF OZ.

"Who ever thought a little girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness? Ughhhh!!! What a world. What a world!"

What a world indeed.

Olympic Voyeurism

Last Saturday the Old Roue visited Pattaya for a break from Bangkok. I hadn't visited Walking Street for ages and told Mam that we would only be out for a few hours. She said fine, since my libido shut down after three drinks. My son's mother kissed me in the cheek and returned to watching her Thai soap, in which the mia noi's daughter had been her father's son.

"Every one of those soaps is the same." The Old Roue was eager to visit the fleshpots of Pattaya. "Someone always ends up in the hospital unconscious and the rich man marries the good girl."

"Don't forget a lot of yelling." Ancient Thai culture was based on a respect for your betters, but these days hi-so wasn't getting the proper wai from the lo-so.

"Yes, Thais love yelling in their soaps."

"TV imitating life." We mounted our motor scooters and set off for Walking Street, the main drag for go-go bars in the Last Babylon.

When Eve bit into the apple, humankind lost its innocence and immediately the two realized that they were naked in paradise. Her nudity didn't matter to Eve, but Adam forced her to wear leaves, so the animals didn't stare at the first woman. Ever since then man has spent time and money to undo Adam's error and this evening Walking Street seemed rammed with people, although most of them were Chinese or Russian bus tourists taking in the wanton sights of Pattaya.

We hit several go gos. This was the bottom of the low season. Each bar was hurting for customers and the girls were hungry for any kind of action; long or short time. They danced with a wicked abandon in hopes of getting lucky with two old farangs.

We bought them drinks. We groped their naked bodies. We left without a promise to come back to barfine them for the night. The two of us had been patronizing go-go around the world for a combined total of 75 years and we understood the game and all its eccentricities, yet I was amazed by the Old Roue's mesmerization by the sight of a naked woman and suggested that he enter the London Olympics as a medlap-worthy voyeur.

“It sounds like an all male event.”

“Women glare instead of gawk.” I was familiar with my wife’s piercing gaze and ordered another vodka tonic. I was on my fourth and in no danger of succumbing to the temptation of the flesh.

“A withering gawk, if I remember correctly.” The Old Roue had been married back in the last century. He was now a single man in Thailand and never strayed from the path of one-night stands.

"But nothing in comparison to your concentration on a go go girl. Your eyes are as wide open as your mouth."

"You're not painting a particularly pretty picture."

"You're wrong. I'm applauding your devotion to voyeurism, although several countries might challenge your crown."

We discussed the various nations’ strengths and narrowed the medal challengers to three Asian countries. “#3 has to be the Indonesians." The Old Roue had spent a winter in Kuta. "The Bali beach boys bore holes through the bungalow walls to watch naked fat tourist chicks.”

“#2 has to be the Indians in Goa." November 1995 had been a dream for me. "They’ll stand five feet away from a fat tourist girl show no shame at staring with a face contorted with sexual fantasies.

“#1 goes to the Pakis. But they really don’t have any occasion to practice, since no females get naked in Pakistan.”

“Just because they can’t train doesn’t mean they won’t score the gold. All the best porno store in LA are run by Pakis.”

“What about America?”

“Women in America are too fat to gawk at. Almost like you have to look at the ground rather than a woman in the mall. Plus they’re so angry.”

Yeah, It’s better to look at your shoes, which is why Americans loved strippers."

"And porno." With the religious right enforcing no sin zones throughout the nation, gawking has become a lost art in the USA. I pointed out two sailors at Heaven Above a Go Go. The nineteen year-old swabbies were drooling on their shore leave shirts.

"They haven't had enough training in gawking."

“Once a year they buy Sport Illustrated swimming issue to answer their fantasies." When I was a boy, we played with our sister's Barbie dolls and used our imaginations.

“None of those girls appeal to me." The Old Roue hadn't fucked a white woman in years and neither had I.

"I feel the same way, but then there are those girls on the internet XXX sites.”

“Don’t count. They’re not real.”

“They’re not?” Like millions of American men I didn't agree with his statement. Those women had names. They smiled and didn’t scold if I looked at them for hours. They never asked where I had been or if I had been looking at other women. They never seemed jealous. Even if I never paid for their time.

I had fallen in love with several and cried if my computer crash during our date. But the Old Roue was right. They weren’t flesh. Not on the computer and that’s why the USA will never win the gold in voyeurism.

We only live for dreams.

Pattaya Redux

"Have you lost your Pattaya fever?" My friend Chas asked in his air-conditioned office on Sukhumvit Road last January. He had been a resident here for over 20 years. His internet service company was doing well, despite the current economic downturn. His wife had cut her hair. The boyish coif was very attractive. He was a lucky man.

"Not really." I had two families here, but I had moved back to New York after six years here to earn enough money for both clans.

"Reading Mnagozeen I sensed a little disenchantment." Chas ordered cappuchinos from his wife.

"My life isn't the same as before." I had had a flourishing Internet business and a nice house off 3rd Road. I wasn't hurting anyone. "Now I'm a tourist instead of a resident. My days in paradise are shorter now."

"You could always come back and live here."

Chas had survived hard times in Pattaya. I probably could have too, except neither of my wives were too supportive. #1 wanted money and strangely enough so did #2. Not many other reasons for a woman in her 20s to be with a 50ish man, although some woman still consider me sexy in the right lack of light.

"Maybe I should have stayed, but it feels like Pattaya's time has come and gone."

"Not at all, mate." Chas beamed with the happiness of a man who has found his niche in life to be very comfortable. "You have to get it together in the States and come back out for another try."

"What and teach?" 30K a month for keeping spoiled beasts from burning down the school.

"No, there are plenty of other jobs."

"Like running a go-go bar?" Sam Royalle had offered a position as manager of his new bar. 60K/month plus commissions on the barfines and drinks. Maybe 100K in total. "Only one problem."

"You butterfly around too much?"

"No." I was relatively faithful to my wives. "I tend to drink and at a bar I tend to drink more. My body couldn't handle more than 6 months in a go-go. Not to mention having to listen to 40 girls' problems and stupid farangs all night."

"Maybe you weren't cut out to be a pimp?"

"I'm not saying that." Pimp would look good on my colorful CV. "Just I'd like to do something straight."

"You weren't always that way."

"Getting arrested by the Thai police tends to narrow the path."

"Arrested?" Chas laughed with derision. "You were held in custody for two hours. You sat in an air-conditioned office with beer. The police put you on national TV. Your bail was only $1000. No one asked you for a bribe. That's not being arrested."

"It was awfully easy."

"I'll say." Chas knew from his experience of being held by the Bangkok police due to a case of mistaken identity. They thought that he was who he was and Chas told them that he might be, but he had never done whatever they thought he had done. It was all a set-up by his business partner, but Chas had to spend a night in jail. "I paid $20US for a chair. No fans. No beers. No nothing."

"Sorry."

"Nothing to be sorry about." Chas proposed a rendezvous with our old crew. Walking Street and go-gos. "When a man's tired of Pattaya, then he's tired of life."

"I might have a few more lap dances in me."

Any man would once he hit the street without his missus.

What happens in Pattaya happens in Pattaya and nowhere else. I don't even bother to tell my stateside friends what, because they would believe me and neither do I some of the times. Some things are better off if they never change.

To Die in Pattaya

The NY Times published a list of why Americans die.

The leading causes of fatality come as no surprise; heart disease, cancer, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease in that order. Almost all of them are related to environment, bad food, obesity, or a cocktail of the three. You are what you eat.

However westerners in Pattaya are promoted from this mortal coil for a contrasting set of circumstances.

#1 Motorcycles.

Men over 40 hit their second stage of youth. They rent a Japanese riceburner without a helmet. The wind blows across their bald plate, as they sing the title line from BORN TO BE WILD until they plow into a slow-moving song-thaew at full speed. DOA and I know because I survived a crash two years ago, because I was wearing a brain bucket.

#2 Sex on Viagra.

A farang is 55 years old with a pacemaker. He's 30 kilos overweight. He drinks 10 beers a night at least and barfines a 45-kilo go-go dancer to bring back to his hotel. In his hotel bed the farang has lost his ardor and drops two Viagra to re-awaken his dormant libido. He's totally out of shape for this sprint and shares a pipe of Ice with the go-go dancer. His heart redlined to 10,000 revs. The aorta clamp shut down on an OD of lust. No one knows how many farangs are bodybagged for in Bangkok-Pattaya Hospital each month for exceeding the speed limit for heartbeat per minute. Some say 50-60/month.

At least they died in the saddle.

#3 Suicide.

The farang has blown out his bank account, savings, and credit cards for an 18 year-old bar girl named Lek. Once his ATM goes dry, her eyes dart over his shoulders.

“She can’t be looking at that 80 year-old fat man?” He asks himself.

Two minutes later Lek’s sitting being the octogenarian on a taxi bike waving as if she were going to 7/11 to a phone card. Last the farang will ever see of her. No money. No bird. Nothing other than a plane back to Heathrow. His family will be waiting in East Doversham. There's only one place to go.

Graham Greene wrote in OUT MAN IN HAVANA that suicide was the work someone who reckons that the odds of ending it all are better than going on.

I know from personal experience it’s always darkest before the storm and whatever doesn’t kill you will only make you wish you were dead. Once you get past that drama then things get better and you can drink beer again. In the words of Scarlett O’Hara, “Tomorrow is another day.”

Add in drinking, ODs, and murder, you have to ask, “Do any farangs in Pattaya die of natural causes?”

Not if they can help it.

The Thai Anti-MIdas Touch
