The Best Ordovician Horseshoe Crab in the World - Earth Day

Dating back in time to the Ordovician age 450 million years ago horseshoe crabs are considered living fossils. These ancient invertebrates' eyes are a million times more sensitive to light than humans, but they don't have wear sunglasses, while mating in mud or sand of shallow coastal waters of the East coasts of America and South East Asia. Sadly these extraordinary creatures are threatened by extinction in the Atlantic Ocean, due to pollution and over-harvesting to provide bait for eels.

In Asia their eggs are a delicacy for the Thais.

For ages I thought แมงดาจาน or maeng daa sounded the same as แมงดา to the farang ear, but แมงดา means pimp and it's difficult to tell the phonetic difference between แมงดาจาน and แมงดา when drinking beer at the beach of Ban Amphur.

Few Americans have ever tasted maeng daa roe, but it's delicious or ความอร่อย anywhere in the world, but never after they've made love.

Horseshoe Crabs And Us - 2050

I have visions
Not dreams
But visions
Of the Future
2050___
Sitting on the B54 bus
Traveling down Myrtle Avenue__
Summertime
No cars
No car fumes
None___

The smell of nature
More trees
More flowers
Vegetable gardens too
People children walking
Riding bikes no cars___

8 billion people in 2026
Less people in 2050
A lot less___
The rich escaped to the Moon
To Mars
We hear nothing from them
Nothing
Good riddance___
After 2026
The tipping point
Things went bad
Very bad
And fast
Fascism, wars, droughts, fires, famines, floods
Chaos___
No place to run
No place to hide
Many prayed
Many more screamed
Bad to Worst
Worst for the good
Worst for the bad
Thoughts and prayers
No help___
Then one day___
Worst went to bad
And then not to good
But not bad___
Not everyone survived
Not everything survived,
But the horseshoe crabs
They multiplied by the billions
And they fed the world with their eggs
As horseshoe crabs had done for so many other species
Through so many other extinctions___
Now 2050
Me
98 years old
With my wives
My children
My grandchildren
My great grandchildren
And friends____
A miracle____
But like horseshoe crabs
Our blood don't die easy____
Deconsume, children, deconsume

It's our only chance___

Horseshoe crabs are only local to the East Coast of America, the Yucatan, and the shores of Indochina. Their existence dates back 440 million years. No evolution. As a New Englander I am familiar with the beaching on the sands of Maine and Cape Ann as well as Long Island and Staten Island.

I was born with the placenta wrapped around my head. To the Irish that is being born with the Caul. One out of 80,000 births. We are meant to have the 'Sight' an ability to see the futures, because of the 'caul'. Like Cassandra I see many. Some are right and others not even close. But this future is very strong. But not for everyone.

I've read at Howl Gallery, KGB, and MoMA.

I now read in the streets. To friends, strangers, the wind. With a strong New England accent. No publicity. Just poetry and not just my own. And I bring poetry books with me for other to read out not.

It's the last magic, besides Magic.

Poem Speak Too

Rene Descartes denied the idea that animals have any intelligence categorizing them as automata since none have any concept of time, yet the horseshoe crab returned to the same beach every year at the same full moon faithful to the ticking of the clock of the cosmos__

These words from you
They are not from the poem
No matter, human
This poem is alive
This poem once spoken
Lives
On the wind
And this poem will live
As long as humans who hear it live
Unless you read this poem to a horseshoe crab
Or Horseshoe crabs
Their poetry will outlive us all__

The Coming of Horseshoe Crabs

I have long been fascinated by horseshoe crabs since my childhood on the New England shores. These prehistoric creatures have existed forever following the rythymn of the moon to benefit from the high tide dragging them out of the water onto the sand to hatch their eggs and fornicate with groups of males who fertilize the eggs in the shallows. At the end of the new moon the high tide sweeps the newborns into the sea. The horseshoe crab is not the only animal to be found in swarms on the beach at this time of year. Their eggs are a critical food source for migrating shorebirds like the Red Knot flying from the Arctic to South America. 17000 miles. Pitstopping in Jamaica Bay as they have since the end of the last Ice Age.

Last week I spotted their empty shells on the Montauk beaches. They don't swim well in the waves and prefer estuarine coves. The same place year after year. NAvy Beach in Montauk.

This coming week the hordes will arrive from the depths of the ocean on the new moon. I have contacted the NYC parks department and they were nice enough to tell about the most popular mating sites. Plum Beach off the Belt Parkway is the best.

The city's Park department has predicted June 9 for their arrival.

I shall be there to greet them.

Their eggs are a critical food source for migrating shorebirds like the Red Knot flying from the Arctic to South America. 17000 miles. Pitstopping in Jamaica Bay as they have since the end of the last Ice Age.

After the full moon fornication event they disappear into the depths of the oceans. Where? Not a mystery.__

A secret__

To homo sapiens, but not Neanderthals their partners through eternity___

This now is just another season of breeding__

ps Rene Decartes deemed animal unintelligent, since they couldn't tell time. Obviously he knew nothing of the horseshoe crabs who migrate to breed on the same beaches at the same time every year. Feh, rationalism versus the punctuality of horseshoe crabs.
