emily emily 2022

In the summer of 2021 I fell deathly ill. Without a liver transplant the hospital doctors said it didn’t look good. I weathered the equinox, but my health deteriorated throughout the autumn. I had no energy and rarely left the Clinton Hill apartment on Myrtle Avenue. Three flights of stairs took everything out of me. UP and down the same. I asked visitors, if I looked yellow and they replied, "A little, but you're not Post-It yellow."

My friends were lying about my appearance and I believed them, until I looked in the mirror, then I stopped looking at the mirror. I had lost over forty pounds and looked like I had played with the Rolling Stones in the 70s.

An English friend had commented about my thinness. A loss of over forty pounds, "That's like losing a Labrador dog."

A year ago I had been edging towards obesity. 205. Now a gaunt 162, my high school weight, but strangely not my ideal BMI weight for 5-10. 155. If nothing happened by Yulemas, I planned to travel across the world to be with my family in Thailand. All four generations.

In November 2022 my friend Ro traveled by train and bus from the Bowery to Clinton Hill once a week to sketch the transition of my illness. I reckoned I had another six months. These sessions broke up the hours of isolation. To most people I was already dead. The artist and I had been lover since 1976. Now we were just friends. Good friends now I was sober. Back when we first met at David's Potbelly on Christopher Street, she had whispered in my ear, "You're an angel under candlelight."

We had both been in our twenties back then. She had smelled of roses and vanilla. We had made love often. She had broken my heart by leaving New York to study art in Paris. Not the first broken heasrt and far from the last.

Now at seventy I had the strength to be a fallen angel without wings. Lying on my bed I read poetry and excerpts from my journals, as she sketched images of me on paper. They told only the truth.

"Why you never get anything published?"

"I never thought I was good enough."

"You're like Emily Dickerson. Trapped on a New England farm. Far from her Boston wife."

"Now in Brooklyn with you. My lover.”

“Ex-lover.”

I hadn't thought of myself as the hermit poetess, but all poets are trapped in solitary worlds by their words and the fears of hearing those words spoken by others. Ro kept drawing lines and I continued to read from my 70s journals, wishing I had recorded on tape what I had been saying back then, so I could force my young downstairs neighbors to listen to the times before their birth. Jack, only twenty-eight, was a true fan of times long gone. So long ago that they can't comprehend our lingering lust for freedom.

After a simple dinner of fluke, yams, and spinach, Ro prepared to leave. The bus stop was a block away. It was raining hard outside. I got up to accompany her.

“You don’t have to. I’m fine. Remember I live on the Bowery." Clinton Hill was not dangerous at all.

The Bowery had changed from the Boulevard of Broken Dreams of our youth. The 1970s. Gone the drunks, the SRO hotels, and the dive bars. The last years hadn't been kind to Myrtle Avenue. White people walked the blocks, but it was truly the 'hood.

Evening had run into the night. Rain pounded against the living room windows. I couldn't see the street from the fourth-floor. Crime was down in New York. No one carrie any money. They possesse nothing to rob, but mad men lurked in the shadows unlit by the street lamps. They owned the city from Coney Island to Pelham Bay in the Bronx. Not dangerous to anyone, but to themselves for the most part.

“I was brought up to be a gentleman, plus I haven't been out of this apartment in days." I handed her an umbrella. Two years ago I had climbed Africa's highest mountain for the Kili Initiative twice before Covid and had collected good rainwear. I preferred an Irish tweed cap and jacket to an umbrella. I liked the smell of wet wool, reminding me that the last sense to go was smell. I leaned over to Ro and sniffed her neck. Vanilla and rose.

She opened the door and asked concerned for my fragile health, "Are you sure?"

"I can make it."

I was weary of people questioning my strength, having sported the nickname 'the Brick' at the West 4th Street basketball courts for decades. I was ready for the descent. Not the deluge outside.

Wicked gusts swept curtains of rain across the avenue. No one was on the sidewalk, until we reached the bodega before the bus stop. A young crazy man harangued someone inside the store from beneath the awning.

"You are all nobodies."

Ro stopped in her tracks. Scared.

"Don't make eye contact. He won't bother us."

She didn't seem so sure. The wind lifted the awning and water cascaded onto the young unfortunate. Ro laughed. I didn't think it was funny and neither did the young man. He shook off the wet and confronted us.

"What you think? You somebody? You nothing."

He closed to an arm's length from us.

I had recently been attacked in the subway by a crazed man aggressing a young girl. His punches hadn't hurt. I had been hit harder, although having recently lost my mind due to ammonia seeping from my guts to my brain, I had understood his madness. Not 100%, but enough to understand when you are fucked you are fucked all the way. Not able to decipher the words in your head. Not able to hear the words of others. Madness.

The young man's fists tensed into rocks. I pushed Ro behind me.

"I am nobody . Who are you?."

His head cocked to the side and he smiled with a young man’s teeth. All of them.

"Are you – Nobody – too? Then there’s a pair of us! Don't tell! they'd advertise – you know!”

We saw each other and recited together as one voice.

“How dreary – to be – Somebody! How public – like a Frog – To tell one’s name – the livelong June – To an admiring Bog!" At the end of the last verse we two saw each other. There was someone else. Emily Emily. By the window of her Amherst home, the Evergreens.

We both smiled and the mirage faded with the rainy wind. I had seen him and he had seen me through Emily Dickerson's most famous poem The young man and I bowed to each other and he walked away into the raging gloom.

"What did you say?" asked Ro. She had heard none of our exchange. There was no explaining the meaning of madness to the sane. The B54 bus pulled up to the stop.

"We shared a few kind words.”

He and me. No one else.

Ro kissed my cheek. She smelled still of the wet vanilla and wet roses.

"You are still my angel under candlelight."

She hopped onto the bus and waved from her seat. The madman had disappeared into the monsoon night. I hoped he got dry. I hoped the same for me. The tweed was soaked. Wet wool smelled of rain. I had gotten what I wanted and I struggled up the four flights to the apartment, gratified that even in madness we are not alone, if we share the madness of nobodies together.

I've written a lot. get ready for the avalanche.

Short Poems, Long Poems

Back in the last decade Eric Marciano, Stephen Facedroph, and I sat in Eric's basement East Village apartment, drinking and snorting blow. HIs wife and children were up in New England. Safe passing midnight we decided to read short poems.

Eric read O Hara's THE DAY THE LADY DIED

It is 12:20 in New York a Friday
three days after Bastille day, yes
it is 1959 and I go get a shoeshine
because I will get off the 4:19 in Easthampton
at 7:15 and then go straight to dinner
and I don’t know the people who will feed me

I walk up the muggy street beginning to sun
and have a hamburger and a malted and buy
an ugly NEW WORLD WRITING to see what the poets
in Ghana are doing these days

I go on to the bank
and Miss Stillwagon (first name Linda I once heard)
doesn’t even look up my balance for once in her life
and in the GOLDEN GRIFFIN I get a little Verlaine
for Patsy with drawings by Bonnard although I do
think of Hesiod, trans. Richmond Lattimore or
Brendan Behan’s new play or Le Balcon or Les Nègres
of Genet, but I don’t, I stick with Verlaine
after practically going to sleep with quandariness

and for Mike I just stroll into the PARK LANE
Liquor Store and ask for a bottle of Strega and
then I go back where I came from to 6th Avenue
and the tobacconist in the Ziegfeld Theatre and
casually ask for a carton of Gauloises and a carton
of Picayunes, and a NEW YORK POST with her face on it

and I am sweating a lot by now and thinking of
leaning on the john door in the 5 SPOT
while she whispered a song along the keyboard
to Mal Waldron and everyone and I stopped breathing

I thought it long and went for Hart Crane's At Melville's Tomb

Often beneath the wave, wide from this ledge
The dice of drowned men’s bones he saw bequeath
An embassy. Their numbers as he watched,
Beat on the dusty shore and were obscured.

And wrecks passed without sound of bells,
The calyx of death’s bounty giving back
A scattered chapter, livid hieroglyph,
The portent wound in corridors of shells.

Then in the circuit calm of one vast coil,
Its lashings charmed and malice reconciled,
Frosted eyes there were that lifted altars;
And silent answers crept across the stars.

Compass, quadrant and sextant contrive
No farther tides ... High in the azure steeps
Monody shall not wake the mariner.
This fabulous shadow only the sea keeps.

I hd not idea what a calyx meant. I asked myself. A guess. In context. A basket.

Steven the thespian went long with TS Eliot THE LOVESONG OF J ALFRED PRUFROCK. He began with the second stanza. English instead of the opening Italian. I have always been inpressed by his memory.

Let us go then, you and I,
When the evening is spread out against the sky
Like a patient etherized upon a table;
Let us go, through certain half-deserted streets,
The muttering retreats
Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels
And sawdust restaurants with oyster-shells:
Streets that follow like a tedious argument
Of insidious intent
To lead you to an overwhelming question ...

On and on and one ad finitum

I grow old ... I grow old ...
I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.

Shall I part my hair behind? Do I dare to eat a peach?
I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach.
I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.

It was an impressive performance.

Drinks all around and more blow of course.

Until my landlord calls screaming that the furnace is broken and get back to the building.

Buzzkill.

ps Frank O'Hara died after a beach buggy stuck him on a Fire Island beach, Hart Crane jumped or was thrown over board in the Gulf of Mexico from the USS Orizaba April 27, 1932, and TS Eliot passed peacefully short of breath at his home in Kensington in London, on 4 January 1965.

Seagulls In The Air

Written Jan. 1, 1920

When six
My best friend Chaney and I walked
To the end of the McKinley Road on Falmouth Foresides
Portland lay across the harbor
The color of the water a Maine blue
Seagulls skated through the cloudless sky__
Chaney pulled out darts taken from his father's den
He gave me one
I threw it without aim
The dart struck a seagull in the neck
Its wings quivered and the bird fluttered down to the mud flat
Blood seeped from the wound
Chaney and I watched the bird die
A wave lapped over the gull
Another washed the corpse into the harbor__
Chaney put away the darts
We walked back home
Neither of us said anything to anyone
Not even to Cathy Burns
We both loved her__
Chaney drowned in Sebago Lake in 1960

I will never forget him

AUGUST 16, 1978 - JOURNAL ENTRY - EAST VILLAGE

Last night I snorted nine thick rails of cocaine with my nerves on edge and my penis soft as a worm. I came back to our apartment from CBGBs well past midnight. Alice was asleep on the bedroom futon. I knew better than to wake her and lay on the living room couch. Not a breath of air from the open windows. I wrapped my naked body in a sheet and futilely attempted to masturbate. No wood and I fell asleep slightly before dawn.

My restless sleep lasted until noon. Alice had already departed for the early shift at the yogurt shop. I have no work, but hopefully can pull off a coke deal for money for a friend of Mark Amitin.

I call Mark.

"$2100 for an OZ."

"That's fine. It's not my money."

The buyer is an entertainment lawyer from Long Island. The end of the line starting with a Bolivian farmer, a local buyer, a muleskinner transporting the leaves, a lab turning the leaves into powder, a pilot, a wholesaler in Florida to a Dominican dealer, and finally my friend, Rick Guadalcanal. My piece of the action will be $150. I should have charged 2200, but decided 2100 was going rate. The buyer is going to test it, then say 'yes' or 'no'. I hope yes, because I only have $11.

Elvis the American Dream
A young Memphis trucker sings rock to become an international star.
HOUNDDOG to VIVA LAS VEGAS
Private jets, Grilled PBJs, sold-out concerts, and Graceland.
The light are off in Graceland.
The King died alone.
None of his fame or fortune forestalled his fate
Priscilla had deserted him
His Mom died at 42.
His body grew fat, but his fans only saw the glitter of the gold suits.
Poor Ole White Boy was never his own
After BLUE SUEDE SHOES hit the charts
The Colonel ran his life.
Elvis was sold out every second of his life
He was the King
And a King can not trust anyone,
But he gave away things to the poor. Cadillacs, houses, money.
He was the common man. Long live Elvis.

Alice came back shaken to her coreby the death of her idol. A hillbilly God.

"I can't feel good about myself."

"Nobody can, because no one hates you more than yourself."

AUGUST 13, 1978 - JOURNAL ENTRY - EAST VILLAGE

Last night while we lay naked in bed, Alice requested to bind her hands behind her back. I went to the kitchen and found a ten-foot cord under the tub. Light seeped through the curtain over the airshaft winow. Not much. She lay on her back like a starfish. I forced her onto her belly. She stretched her arms back and I looped the rope around her wrists. I entered her with a steely hardness and we fucked for thirty minutes. Neither of us came and she asked, if she could masturbate.

"Yes, slave."

"But you can't watch."

"You want me to take off the rope?"

"No, I can reach me." Alice had been a gymnast in high school. She could tied her body in knots and always said that if she failed as an actress that she could make it in the carnival as a contortionist.

I believed her and went into the living room, listening as her whimpers became moans.

I sat on the sofa feeling like a Wehrmacht soldier trapped in Stalingrad; no more bullets and nowhere to run, but to death.

This morning I did a wash-dry of the sheets at the local laudromat on 1st Avenue.

I can't believe I'm writing something so banal, but most of life is banal and in most cases that is a good thing. Mark Amitin's theater venture fell apart on the road. I have no money, no job, and no future. Rent is due in less than two weeks. TS Eliot wrote that 'April is the cruelest month of all'. The poet had never spent an August in New York. Everyone is going on vacation. Only the dead, dying, and desperate remain in the city

In the 1960s and early 1970s army deserters dotted the interstate's shoulders either heading to Canada or into hiding at a hippie commune.

"Ain't no way I'm going back to Vietnam. Let the general fight with the blacks."

Afro-Americans constituted a high percentage of combat troops and casualties through the Long War. My draft number was 91. I avoided service by attending college thanks to a $10,000 grant to avoid shooting at strangers and Viet Cong shooting at me in villages foreign to teenagers on the South Shore. I started as a Math major, failed two subjects, but remained at BC. I saw no jungles or rie paddies. I heard no bullets whizzing past me or thudding into fellow soldiers. I studied THE MYSTERIES OF THE HOLY EUCHARIST. A Boy Scout uniform was the only one I have worn other than an altar boy's cassock and surplice forever faithful to atheism.

Alice lies on the futon, complaining about being nothing. She is in a rush to be an actress and their clock ticks fast. Still being nothing is better than being a bullet-riddled corpses in Vietnam, although the only fighting in Indochina is between the Khmer Rouge and the PAVN (People's Army of Vietnam). I have guilt about not fighting for my country. Not much, but some.

Alice looks out the window of the back bedroom.

"It's raining."

"What else is new?" After a heat wave the city has been deluged by rain for the past eight days. My kitchen faucet also drips endlessly.

Rain - the life-giver of water The Johnstown Flood 1889 The Little Conemaugh River The South Branch dam failure The flood washed away the helpless Like the mighty Mississippi through a valley. Forty days and forty night. No, just one torrential night And the next day Johnstown was gone.

AUGUST 13, 2021 - JOURNAL ENTRY - CLINTON HILL

About fifteen years ago in Pattaya, Thailand I learned that I had somehow transitioned to 'Vanilla' status by a visit to an S&M parlor. Nik, an English friend wanted to pay me back for a favor and suggested we go the THE CASTLE. MY wife was curious about how the club's goings-on and gave me permission for bad boys night out. 'The Castle' sas right across the street from our regular THE BUFFALO BAR. We told the girls there about our intended destination and they joked how we were going to be whipped like 'Kwaii.' or a stupid buffalo. The bouncers yelled we were 'sadique' and Nik asked me at the door, "Are you top or bottom?"

I don't know. I guess top."

"Me too, but I might try some bottom as a test." I wouldn't have expected any else from an Englishman. "Remember this is all on me."

The black-clad mama-san gave us a list. Top and bottom fantasies.

"Yeah, I'll do that and that. What about you?"

"Nothing really strikes my fancy."

Nik and the old lady read through the menu.

"No, no, definitely no."

The dominatrix and slaves enacted rough sex routines. I shook my head in disappointment. "Mai mee faaen-dah-see."

"Good enough for me," said Nik and two slender sadistic witches dragged him into a back room. The lash of a whip. Scream. "More."

After an hour Nik emerged chastened by the experience and said, "Damn, that was something, but I don't think I'll go bottom again. Are you sure you want nothing?"

"Nope, I'm vanilla."

When I was in the hospital I didn't look at any porno online or have a asexual fantasy. My libido had to be damaged along with my body by my years of excessive drinking, but I thankfully don't have any DTs. My roommate at NYU was a black lineman. I had overheard him tell the doctor that he had fallen in the street. Both of us so strong and now invalid. The doctor says I'll get better, but it will be a fight.

And I didn't forty-two years ago.

PS THE CASTLE is still open 24/7. Muang Pattaya, Thailand Hours: Opens at 6PM - Closes at 3AM Phone: +66 91 052 2671

Journal Entry August 3, 1978 - East Village

Last night I dreamed of a submerged Soviet nuclear missile sub silently gliding towards Norway and NATO has any defense against such a threat. The siloes open and H-Bombs torpedoed to the surface. MAD. Atomic winter. The end of Mankind.

I woke in a sweat on the futon of our East 10th Street apartment. It was day. Alice lies within arm's reach. She murmurs with an educated hillbilly accent and spreads her legs.

"Now would be nice."

And I obeyed her sleepy command.

AUGUST 3, 2021 - NYU HOSPITAL - MANHATTAN

On May 29, 1952 my mother gave birth to her second son.

I was named after her father.

The next day we left for home.

I hadn't spent a night in the hospital since my birth.

Yesterday the attending doctor told me, "We have to operate on the lesions in your stomach to stop the bleeding."

The nurses are readying me for the trip down to the operating room.

I remember this dream and making love to Alice.

I never cummed in her. She was frightened of birth.

Even coitus interruptus can be nice.

Suburban sins of a Friday night.
And the train keeps a-rolling
Across America.

I always on the south window heading back from Boston to New York on a Amtrak train.

Once passing through the pine barrens beyond Providence, I spotted a young teen girl standing alone on a dirt road crossing naked. She danced to something and was gone. I've never forgotten her. In the barrens. The pines are never bare.

July 13, 1986 Journal

revised 12/27/2027
A dream

I'm trying to get into my old room at home in Boston. Some of my things are still there. Behind me the door opens and a young man with a shotgun comes to me. Then he stands before the door and hands over the gun. I twirl it over my head and then I'm on my moped next to a broken down car someplace on a highway. Several moments later the moped is dead and falls apart

Poem

Lena and me
On the A train to Times Square
Sliding my thigh between yours
Denim on denim
Skin beneath the denim
The A train rocks on the track
We stand
At the end of the car
Only a few passengers
We don't care if they look
We are lost
In this act
Your hand on my crotch
My cock underneath the denim
The train shutters into Times Square
Stops
We don't stop
Lena bites her lip
As we dry hump
Doors open
All the passengers off
Doors shut
No passengers on
Only us
The A train
Screeches out of Times Square.
Lena shuts her eyes
Moan
Stutters a moan
Lena and me
On the A train__

Farewell the Spawn

July 11
The horseshoe crabs are gone
From the Rockaways
Jamaica Bay and points
East and south
The annual spawning has come
With the late Spring full moons
To the East Coast of America, the Yucatan, and South East Asia
Hard shelled females lay hundres of thousans of eggs
Smaller males fertilize the future of the species
A repeat of 400 million other pawnings
Give or take several millions
Through eternity
And now gone All the horseshoe crabs
To the depths of the deep ocean
Unknown forever
To humans
Not a mystery
A secret
From man
For eternity

Koh Samui - July 1994 - Journal

July 1993
Full moon on Koh Samui
Rising from the black sea
Lightning flashing
Inside monsoon thunderheads
40,000 feet overhead

Sitting in a beer bar
On Chaweng Beach
Aoy
Sweet
From Isaan
North
"Mother not know
"Father sick. Buffalo too
I work bar.
I like you.
I go with you."___

Her skin
Buttered silk
Smelling of Jasmine
Like the flower on the night air.

Aoy says number
"This not love
This is work."
"Go with me.
Help me.
Help family"
How can I say no?"
"Okay, let's go."

On my motosai
3 km to my crib
A bungalow
Overlooking the pla-muk boats
On the Gulf of Siam

On the curves
To Coral Cove
Slow down to 60
Aoy holds tight
Arms around my waist
Lightning flashing overhead
The moon running with the clouds
And me with the wind
With Aoy
Through the night
To Coral Cove.

The Barren Pine Barrens

Crossing the Stretch

From Amagansett to Montauk
Through the dead Pine Barrens
The trees killed by pine beetles
Almost all of them
Sap sucked dry by the pest
Save for those saved from the blight__
Pockets of pine
Surrounded dead pines
Fallen staggering dry and gray
Awaiting a flame to burn them all
But not today
July 3
2026
Maybe some day
Maybe the 4th of July
Montauk is safe
No pines in the marshes
No pines in the Hither Hills
No pines in Montauk
Only before the Stretch
The Stretch is the only route
Out of Montauk
Other than the sea
And not all of us possess a boat
We ain't going anywhere, but here __

Before and Now and Thereafter - 2026

Long ago
Long before Taylor Swift
We became our species
How does not matter
As what does not matter
Our species existed
Prey for all animals Saber-Toothed tigers, crocodiles, mosquitos ad infinitum We were not atop the feeding chain We was not on the bottom What saved us We smelled bad
We tasted worst__
And we learned from the other species
How to speak
To feed
To love
We roamed this planet
For eons upon eons
Our footprints marked the soil
Bones scattered across the plains, valleys, mountains everywhere.
Sometimes alone
Sometimes together
Like the other species outs was social
And sometimes not__
Our species changed with challenges
From Mother Earth
Floods, quakes, and lastly the last Ice Age
The great glacier retreats
15000 years ago
We once more.
Alive and ready to spread
To open land across the globe.
Learning from the lions, tigers, and bears.
How to stay alive
How to kill
Lions tigers and bears
And
US__
And we like the taste of us
We tasted of Spam
Goodbye Neanderthals
Goodbye Cro-magnon
Post Ice Age
We numbered approximately 10000 individuals
No known names
Earth no name
First known name
KI
In Sumerian
2900 BC
Over five thousand years ago
World population
Maybe three million
We spread KI
We cover Terra
We abuse Der Welt
And all beneath the sky
We are not Man
Man is war
Man is slavery
Man is greed, envy, pride, lust, gluttony, and wrath.
Sloth is a virtue in the age of mass species suicide.
Every man woman and child committing every sin in hopes of meet Taylor Swift.
I
One man
Have decided enough
No more am I a homo sapien.
A wise man___
Now
A Neanderthal
I resign from humanity
To rejoin my genes
Neanderthal
Beaten from me by nuns.
Lefthandedness
A welcoming smile
An occidental bump at the base of my skull
Short arms
Short legs
Good hair__
Abandoning humanity and all it's evils.
To walk free of learning
To see the stars
To read the wind
To meet Taylor Swift
No longer one of them

Just only me
And my name is not Ki
It's Ugh___
