New Words for the Modern Age

This year Webster Dictionary has allowed a new series of modern slang to be entered into the lexicon of the English language. Most people I know ie English speakers are light years ahead of the educational tome in their vernacular depravity, but here are some words which might make it into the revision for 2007.

1. Intaxication: Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize it was your money to start with.

2. Reintarnation: Coming back to life as a hillbilly.

3. Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down in the near future.

4. Foreploy: Any misrepresentation about yourself for the purpose of getting laid.

5. Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject
financially impotent for an indefinite period.

6. Giraffiti: Vandalism spray-painted very, very high.

7. Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn’t get it.

8. Inoculatte: To take coffee intravenously when you are running late.

9. Hipatitis: Terminal coolness.

10. Osteopornosis: A degenerate disease. (This one got extra credit.)

11. Karmageddon: It’s like, when everybody is sending off all these really bad vibes, right? And then, like, the Earth explodes and it’s like, a serious
bummer.

12. Decafalon (n.): The grueling event of getting through the day consuming only things that are good for you.

13. Glibido: All talk and no action.

14. Dopeler effect: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly.

15. Arachnoleptic fit (n.): The frantic dance performed just after you’ve
accidentally walked through a spider web.

16. Beelzebug (n.): Satan in the form of a mosquito, that gets into your bedroom at three in the morning and cannot be cast out.

17. Caterpallor (n.): The color you turn after finding half a worm in the fruit
you’re eating.

And the pick of the literature:

18. Ignoranus: A person who’s both stupid and an asshole.

Home Alone ala Pattaya

On several occasions my wife has left town to 'supposedly' take care of her 'sick' sister. Her return date always overlaps an extra weekend. I could suspect the worse, but I never minded being in the house alone. No one, but me and my dog. Could have been a sad situation, except I don’t reside in a hopeless American suburb where the only light at night is the glow of television in the bedroom window.

I live in Pattaya.

It’s Saturday night.

Watching TV is for the near-dead.

It’s party time, even for old gits like me.

There’s a bar at the end of my road. The Buffalo Bar is two minutes away by bike and Walking Street fires off from 9pm to dawn. My friend Derrick calls from the COYOTE A GO-GO. He’s with his girlfriend and she’s with two friends. I shower, shave, and splash on a little cologne. One glance in the mirror tells the truth. My physique might have been the Acropolis once, but now I’m in ruins. No that it matters, because every man is king for a night in Pattaya as long as his ATM card is flush.

I get to Soi Diamond in less than ten minutes. I park my bike under a massage parlor. Walking Street is packed with Chinese bus tourists, western males, backpackers slumming from Koh Samet, Russian families on a cheap holiday, Thai police, dancing girls, bar touts, transvestites, and marines on R&R from a training mission. Thankfully I recognize no one on the way to the Coyote. Especially none of my wife’s friends, who tell her my every move.

Derrick is sitting at a round table. Nung is on his right. Her friends are drinking B-52s. The three of them are under 22. All of them would stop traffic in Iowa, Indiana, and Illinois and any other state beginning with I. ie the state in Illin’.

I order a vodka and cranberry. Nung’s friend smiles at me. When I was back in the States last month not one woman smiled at me. Can’t blame them. I’m nearly a hundred years old to a 20 year-old New York female.

I turn to the stage. The five naked dancers are painted with day-glo flowers. Collectively they weigh as much as two western women fattened by Frankenfood from Mickie D. I come from New York and always thought about taking over Governor’s Island and turning the abandoned Coast Guard station into a version of Pattaya. Better than any casino project. Traffic would be backed up to the Delaware Bridge by men desperate to have a real good time rather than a $20 lap dancer by a gold-digging American go-go girls. The City of New York would be able to pay for new schools. It’s all too good to be true, because the USA is too puritan to allow prurient behavior on the scale of Pattaya.

The girls on stage are dancing to an insipid boy band hit. At least it isn’t HOTEL CALIFORNIA. The bar is dead. It’s the height of the low season. Derrick suggests we vacate the premise to HEAVEN ABOVE. Nung used to work there and has plenty of friends working the firepole. We pay the bill and walk through the back alleys to Soi Diamond.

HEAVEN ABOVE is upstairs from the other go gos. The welcoming staff bow in greeting, their hands pressed together in a wai. We climb the stairs and enter the bar. The music is techno. The girls like it. Derrick orders more drinks. The owner comes over and says hello. He used to own a pimp bar in East St. Louis during the 70s. We speak about surfing in Ventura. “I miss the waves, but this is better.”

Two girls come up to him with kisses. They wear flimsy nighties with nothing on underneath. His eyes roll in his sockets. The devil has a good grip on his soul. Mine too for sin in thought. Derrick is chatting to his girlfriend. He seems happy, although I hope she doesn’t notice his looking over her should at a new dancer fit as the butcher’s dog.

Vittorio enters the go-go. He is trying to start a magazine about Pattaya go-go. It’s a good idea and his photos are much better than mine. He sits down.

“You’ve been here a long time. ” I say and then ask, even if it’s none of my business. “You have a girlfriend here?”

“Yeah, she works here. It’s supposed to be a secret, because she has a sponsor who’s sending her money and is also a friend of the owner.” His eyes betray the object of his desire to me and anyone else. Plus I figure it’s only a secret to the guy sending her cash. She’s a show girl and would stop a car chase on an LA Freeway.

“Trouble is her middle name. We used to be so romantic, but now it’s only sex.”

“She can only give what she can give.”

“I know but I want more.”

“What you want her to be a virgin.”

“No.”

“You want her to retire from the bar.”

“She wouldn’t do that.”

She’s on stage miming to a Thai love song.

“So relax and just have a good time. That’s all she wants from and you and that’s all you can give her.”

I hate giving advice at a bar, especially after I’ve been drinking and when it’s advice I myself wouldn’t follow. I order another drink. I’m over the limit and signaled Derrick that I’m leaving before the Hypocrite Police shoot me for sounding stupid.

“Are you taking someone home?”

“Me?” I was so drunk I didn’t want to go home with myself. “I’m faithful to my wife.”

“Only because you’re drunk.”

It was the truth.

Somehow it’s already 2am. The street is packed with drinkers, bar girls, more TVs, more police, more go-go girls. I could go to Marine Disco to see what’s happening. It’s full this time of night. Instead I decided to drive home.

If I were in the States the cops would stop me for DWI. Here I cruise home without any trouble. The streets beyond 2nd Road are empty. So is my house. Not really. My dog is wagging its tail. I fall on the sofa. I turn on the TV, knowing full well it’s too loud, but then it doesn’t keep me from sleeping. Nothing would, because I’m really passing out.

At least I had the smarts to put Tylenol and a glass of water on the coffee table.

The breakfast of drunks.

Circus Life for Elephants

Whenever I have a married couple or single mother and kid visit me in Pattaya, I take them on a tour of the various tourist points of interest; the Khao Keo outdoor zoo, the Temple of Truth ( the biggest wooden structure in the world, and Nong Nooch Gardens. while steering well clear of my usual haunts i.e. the Buffalo Bar, the Welkom Inn, and Heaven Above a Go-Go.

None of these family fare attractions are far away and don’t give a clue to why you really came here, which was to partake life in the Last Babylon. Sin sin sin.

While my nephew and I were at Nong Nooch we attended the elephant show. Before the pachyderms entered the arena, we bought 50 baht of bananas from a vendor. We sat in the front row under the shade. The music announced the first elephant. A giant tusker chained at his back feet. He took one look at the bananas and charged the stands. The minders had no chance of controlling him. I chucked the bananas at him and grabbed my godson’s hand before we were trampled. The crowd both Thai and farang laughed at our timidity, but a elephant is like a 400 pound gorilla. It gets to sit or shit wherever it wants.

When I mentioned this story at my local, my French friend Bruno said, “You are lucky. Two years ago an English woman tried to hide the bananas and was stomped by the elephant. She was killed and the elephant fled the scene to Isaan.”

“That’s nothing.” An oldtimer said with a whiskey voice. “Back in the last century a circus dwarf was swallowed by a hippopotamus in a freak accident. He was a trapeze artist and dismounted onto the trampoline. The angle was bad and his disappeared into the mouth of a hippo. Hippos will eat anything and the beast swallowed the dwarf. Fucking audience applauded thinking it was part of the act. The handlers were unable to free the dwarf, but said the hippo was a vegetarian.”

No one laughed at the punchline, but Bruno muttered under his breath. “I heard that story before only the dwarf landed headfirst in the hippo’s asshole.’

“No.” This was starting to sound like an urban legend.

“Quais, and the dwarf survived, but quit because the circus owner wanted him to repeat the act every night.”

Which goes to show there’s no business like show business.

Sleaze de Bangkok (Past and Present)

Most tourists to Thailand have wandered through Patpong. It’s a tame monkey in comparison to twenty years ago, but other than the sex shows on the second floors there was never too much sleaze about the place. Straight-forward go-go bars and beer halls with the usual barfine and ‘love you long time’ lines.

Ho-hum.

Massage parlors. Girls with numbers washing you with their bodies. Very sensual but how wicked can a place be that the entire time you’re there the girl is washing you clean.

I’m talking about dives. Bars your mother prayed you would never enter. Booze halls your father never visited. Dumps you don’t write home and brag, “Gee, you should have seen where I spent Christmas.”

My first dive in Bangkok was Kenny’s Bar off Soi Duplei. A good daytime bunch of losers searching for the chance of sex or drugs or whatever comes there way. There was even a little gambling going on and Kenny was always trying to get you to go with his girls or him or the three of them. He’d even use drugs to weaken your resolve. Sadly Kenny went off to the UK with a lover, but his cousin Fat Pat is maintains the same level of depravity.

Kenny’s purports to be a bar/restaurant. It serves food. Walking by you wouldn’t think it was anything evil.

The next three are godless haunts with no socially redeemable values.

If you even know of these places you have already sold your soul to the Devil.

Congratulations.

Eden Club off Sukhumvit.

You walk into the bar.

The manager, a weedy frog, says, “The Eden is not for drinking. It is for fucking.”

The Frenchman claps his hands like the Marquis de Sade. The girls separate into two groups. Michel, that’s his name, says, “The girls on the right are 2 hole. The girls on the left 3. Do you need me to explain?”

If you’re there, you know which holes he means.

Hint, the count has nothing to do with the nose or ears.

If you hit the Eden right then you can choose two princesses, but if you show up with a friend, then you fight over the pickings.

And let’s face it going to a place like the Eden is no fun unless you can brag about your exploits to your friend afterwards.

3 holers are understandably not as pretty as 2 holers.

But they are good to mix and match.

The girls will do anything to each other for an hour; dildo, 69, XXX movies.

No request too perverse for 3 holers.

You better bring your party hat because the Eden costs about 3500 for an hour and you want to get your money’s worth.

And the clock starts ticking from the time you leave the bar. So no lingering on the stairs.

If you are stuck for ideas, the girls will provide inspiration.

Also Michel, the garlic eater, promises ’satisfaction guaranteed or your money back’.

Which is almost impossible after you’ve been a pig.

It’s a fine place to walk out feeling like you need to confess your soul, but it is far from damnation. That honor is accorded two legendary Bangkok establishments.

It’s 2am. everything is shut. You’re ready to go to hell.

Damn Satan. I’ll take his best shot.

For real sleaze you need some place when you mention its name, people scrunched their eyes and say, “You’re not seriously thinking about going there.”

THERMAE

The Thermae Coffee House is a legend of sleaze.

Entering the bar requires courage. You descend into a firetrap populated by the possibly wildest girls in Bangkok. ie their fun began way after where yours ended.

Thermae is not for the casual tourist as the male clientele was better suited for a police line-up in any country in the world; dealers, thieves, scammers, drunks, losers, perverts as nauseum.

If pets resemble their owners, then these guys own rats, snakes, and weasels.

In short the Thermae was a Disneyworld funhouse for deviants.

The girls could be scary. Ugly enough to make a train take a dirt road or else scary in the sense that you never knew what you were getting into; fight with an ex-, STD, psycho burn-out at your hotel, possible jumpers.

But that’s the price of admission to the most depraved place in town.

This place is sin and you know you’re a bad person sitting there.

Plus it was almost impossible to get the smell of a night off you.

At the reception of your hotel the staff would take a sniff.

‘Eau de thermae’.

Your esteem dropped to the level of a street dog, especially when your date from the bar enters after you. Cheap slutty and drunk. Miss Dok Thong 2006. The staff check your room for possible theft of towels. That’s the mark of Thermae.

GRACE BAR

This dark star of depravity has even scared the infamous Stickman.

Thanks to the recent edicts on early closure of bars in Bangkok, few nightspots remain open after 2am. The Grace makes the effort to uphold its myth. The girls are beasts and the men are lovers of beasts. No one seems to bathe or change their clothing. Some smell like they might have died in the past 2-3 days.

Everyone at the bar has smoked enough to pass second-hand cancer by breathing. Alcoholism tops 100%. Drugs probably 85%. No one deserves a second chance in the Grace. They wasted those long ago.

It’s a hellhole. The males are mostly drop-outs from the Osman Bin Laden suicide camp, Nigerian scam artists, Sikh tailors who haven’t washed in a year, and American expats too fucked up to realize they’re not in a go-go bar.

The women are beastoids to fuggly to fuck unless you’ve lost four of your senses. Most of them are old, which is good because the people frequenting the Grace should be banned from procreating little trogg monsters.

Still you got to love these, because without it, Bangkok would be one big shopping mall and we don’t buy anything in those emporiums.

Well, maybe Ginger Crisps at Marks and Spencers.

And stalk the girls in the lingerie section.

“Sorry, I’m looking for a bra for my wife. What size are your breasts?”

Never say girlfriend. Single girls love stealing men from their wives.

Gotcha!

Sarah Palin was pranked by two Canadian radio jocks pretending to be President Sarkozy of France. Snowbacks aren't too smart, but then religious fanatics are seriously gullible. After all they believe in God.

For a transcript of their cold call, please go to this URL.

You betcha.

WORK

My first job was at a small family-styled restaurant in my hometown. It was across the street from my neighborhood. I was a short-order cook. On my second day the manager gave lessons on how to cut tomatoes with the meat slicer.

"Why don't we use a knife?" I thought that his technique looked dangerous.

"I'm your boss." He was 25. I was 14. He expected obedience from his employees. "You do what I say."

"Okay." I did it the way he wanted and a day later during the dinner rush, I accidentally stuck my index finger into the circular slicer. There was a lot of blood, but little pain. My boss tried to staunch the blood with a towel. It turned red real fast. My mother came to the restaurant and drove me to the hospital. The doctor in the emergency room numbed the finger with a shot and closed the wound with 8 stitches. My finger was wrapped with a big bandage, so I couldn't work in the restaurant. I still got back thanks to workman's compensation and received $1000 for the injury from my employers.

It was the summer of 1967. I went to the beach every day and swam with the bandage in the sea. My finger recovered within a week. I stayed out of the restaurant for a month. My father finally send me back.

"You're no loafer."

he was only partially right. I don't like working. Not for other people, but sometimes I have to earn money, so forty-one years after my first job I've come out of semi-retirement to sell fine jewelry at Stepan Paul at the Plaza Hotel in New York.

No way we need to cut tomatoes with a meat slicer there.

I hate working, but it is nice walking into the Plaza.

My new name is Pierre.

Pierre of the Plaza.

Only the Worst Can Celebrate a Tie

Cambodia and Thailand have been disputing ownership of the Preah Vihar temple for the better part of this year and the stress of this tension has resulted in the Cambodian football team failing to beat the worst team in the FIFA ranks.

It wasn't a loss only a 2-2 tie with East Timor, whose national team had previously been beaten in every game during their six-year existence.

"It was the first game we didn't lose — we're all very proud." East Timor's coach was understandably happy to put their first point in the FIFA. Playing conditions are rudimentary in the impoverished country and skill levels a challenge and the coach recognizes the team has a long way to go. "We have no resources to keep this team together and we barely have grass to play on."

East Timor almost achieved the undreamable goal of winning this game, however a Cambodian player rescued the nation's pride with a late score.

Neither team is contemplating a World Cup in the foreseeable future, but then the same could be said for England.
