Gong-gyeog, Gong-gyeog, Gong-gyeog

My mother loved the Pearl Harbor movie TORA TORA TORA. TORA TORA TORA meant 'attack attack attack' in Japanese. Gong-gyeog, Gong-gyeog, Gong-gyeog translates the same in Korean. This week North Korea has suggested to Russia and the UK that they abandon their diplomatic missions in Pyongyang before April 10, stating that the government will not be able to safeguard the embassy after that date. Nations neighboring the communist state are weighing the threat level to their countries. South Korea has sent two Aegis missile destroyers to sea, as the North Korea transported two mobile launchers to a secret site on the the eastern coast. Most rational minds understand that Kim Jong Un's strike capacity is strictly conventional, since the NK ICBMs cannot deliver a nuclear warhead. Most observers agree that the Supreme Leader's bellicose statements are designed at cementing the people behind his regime. China's patience with its long-time ally once "as close as lips and teeth" is wearing thin according to the Telegraph and states that North Korea no longer merits much respect among ordinary Chinese, who have taken to insulting Kim Jong-un as "Fatty Kim" or "Fatty the Third", in reference to his father and grandfather, on the Chinese internet. Fidel Castro has urged calm, although Beyonce and JayZ, America's # 1 pop couple are in Cuba this week. North Korea has no plans to attack the island 90 miles south of Key West. Maybe they are privy to something the rest of us don't know after speaking with Dennis Rodman, who was in North Korea talking basketball with Kim Jong Un. Didn't he go out with Madonna. See below for the range of North Korea's missiles

Weather in Wyoming

Today's weather in Yellowstone Park remains faithful to winter. 30F and snow covering most of the volcanic plateau in the northeast corner of Wyoming. I have driven through that region in the late-April. The seasons change slow at that altitude and New York City is following the western state's slow lead into Spring. Flowers are sprouting from hibernation and trees are showing green buds. The sun is bright and I felt its distant warmth sitting in front of Ralph's Meats on Lafayette Street, but the chill was still in the air. Tomorrow the meteorolgists are predicting the temeperature will hit 59 at the Fort Greene Observatory. It's one of the highest point in Brooklyn. Battle Hill is the highest at 220 feet, so good-bye winter. At least for now.

Inspiration Point

The photo is of Inspiration Point at Yellowstone Park. At one time access to the razor sharp cornice was permissible. It's been prohibited for years, but people are drawn to the danger and in 1999 I arrived to the scenic vista overlooking Yellowstone Falls at dawn. That time of day there were no tourists at the viewing area and I climbed over the protective railing to walk out on that narrow promontory. The width was about two feet. I didn't look down until I reached the end. All around me was air and I realized that the proper name for this jutting rock was Terrification Point. I turned around and inched back to safety. Inspiration indeed.

Asshole

My old corner on East 10th street was always hot.

Reefer, cocaine, and heroin were the action, but the dealers and I had an understanding. No one dealt off my stoep and I didn't call the police.

If someone dealt off my stoep, I still didn't call the police. I fucked with them myself.

The dealers and I had a truce for many years. We were friends. When Franklin went to prison, he gave me his season tickets to the Nets. They sucked, but I got to see NBA basketball played by the other team.

When I left my bike on the street during my trips around the world, they watched it.

Not all of them were cool.

One night I came home and found a young dealer on my steps. Rakee wasn't from the neighborhood.

I told him to push off.

"Fuck you, you don't tell me what to do."

"You're an asshole."

"Asshole. I'll show you what kind of asshole I am."

Rakee showed a 9mm tucked in his waistband.

"Okay, now I know what kind of asshole you are."

I went inside to my apartment, filled a trash bag with water, and climbed to the roof.

"Rakee was dealing from the steps.

"I took aim and dropped the bag. It hit him on the shoulder, but the impact knocked him out. I went back downstairs, took his piece, and dumped it in the sewer. Later I came home and stopped in the bodega. Rakee entered with about 10 other sinse brothers. "This is the motehrfucker who called me a niggah." "Niggah. I never called you a niggah. I called you an asshole." I looked to his back-up. "You ever hear me call anyone a niggah." They shook they heads. They knew me. They didn't really know the accuser. "Asshole." was his name from then on. They were cool, some of those dealers back then.

TEDDY BEARS' PICNIC Dave Van Ronk

Dave Van Ronk was a growling folk singer, who benignly dominated Greenwich Village in the 60s. He mostly played the East Coast due to his refusal to fly. His mode of travel was buses, trains, or a car driven by a young girlfriend. His bearish body hid a gentle heart, which he revealed any time he performed the classic TEDDY BEARS’ PICNIC.

I couldn't find any version of this song on Youtubes, but the Mayor of Greenwich Village certainly would have enjoyed the audience in the above photo.

TEDDY BEARS PICNIC

If you go down in the woods today
You’re sure of a big surprise.
If you go down in the woods today
You’d better go in disguise

For ev’ry bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain, because
Today’s the day the teddy bears have their picnic.y

Ev’ry teddy bear who’s been good
Is sure of a treat today.
There’s lots of marvelous things to eat
And wonderful games to play.

Beneath the trees where nobody sees
They’ll hide and seek as long as they please
That’s the way the teddy bears have their picnic.

Picnic time for teddy bears
The little teddy bears are having a lovely time today
Watch them, catch them unawares
And see them picnic on their holiday.

See them gaily gad about
They love to play and shout;
They never have any cares;

At six o’clock their mummies and daddies,
Will take them home to bed,
Because they’re tired little teddy bears.

If you go down in the woods today
You’d better not go alone.
It’s lovely down in the woods today
But safer to stay at home.

For ev’ry bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain, because
Today’s the day the teddy bears have their picnic.

I couldn’t find Dave Van Ronk's version of this song, but check out TWELVE GATES TO THE CITY by going to this URL

My Friend Steve

A young man named Brian is sailing solo around the world. A typhoon catches him in the open waters of the Pacific. His sloop is battered by giant waves. There is no time for an SOS.

Brian abandons his sinking boat and prays for his life, as the heavy seas savage his life raft. Finally he is washed overboard. Water fills his lung. Death seems certain, only he wakes on the soft sands of a deserted island.

Water, coconuts, fish, and fruit provide sustenance.

A week and month passes with the rising and setting of the sun. No jets overhead, no ships on the horizon, no Man Friday and Brian resigns himself to solitude.

A year later an epic typhoon savages the island.

The next morning Brian sees a life raft on the reef. Shark fins break the surface. He swims across the lagoon to discover a woman. Not just any woman, but Cindy Crawford the supermodel. Brian drags the raft through the tumult of the surf and nurses the famous beauty to health. Little by little she regains her strength. After a month she thanks Brian for saving her life.

"If there's anything I can do let me know. Anything."

Brian thinks about it for a second and says, "No, I did what any human would do for another human."

A week becomes a month. Cindy and Brian are young. Sex is in the air. Brian is handsome. Cindy is a dream come true. Finally one night they make love.

Paradise. Eden. Utopia.

In the morning they walk the beach hand in hand.

"You remember saying that you would do anything?" Brian asks Cindy with an almost perverse tone.

"Yes." Cindy had been waiting for this moment for months. All men were alike.

"Did you mean that?"

"Yes." Cindy was expecting the worse, but Brian had saved her life and she said, "Anything."

Brian pulls out a Red Sox baseball cap and says, "Could you wear this and let me call you Steve? He was my best friend."

"Sure." This was nothing and Cindy put the cap on her head. "Happy?"

"I couldn't be happier." Brian shuts his eyes and says, "Steve, you will never believe who I'm fucking."

Bosox Undefeated

Yesterday the Red Sox beat the Yankees 8-2. We are undefeated and as any Red Sox fan knows 1st place is always good. Especially at the expense of the NY Douchebags.
