Sitting In The Korova Milk Bar

I loved CLOCKWORK ORANGE, Stanley Kubrick's 1971 homage to Anthony Burgess' violent vision of the future. After famed interior designer/sculptor Alan Jones refused to work on the film for free, the director hired set designer John Barry to replicate Alan Jones' naked female tables and chairs for the movie's Korova Milk Bar.

For years I had mistakenly thought that Alan Jones was responsible for the decor. I like JohN Barry's mimicking plagiarism, but I prefer Alan Jones' work, because nothing like the Milk Bar anywhere in this future.

Dali Dinner Tables

Dali was way ahead of his time with this photo. Allen Jones lovingly purloined the surrealist's image for the Cordova Milk Bar's furniture in CLOCKWORK ORANGE. His table went for $1.5 million at the Gunther Sachs auction breaking the record for the artist threefold. Then some people just want to be a table. The Japanese call this 'Nyotaimori' or'female body presentation. Supposedly virgins help flavor the fish. Personally I prefer a salty female. They taste better than fish.

CLOCKWORK ORANGE 50

CLOCKWORK ORANGE turns 50 today. Anthony Burgess had written the book fast. He thought that he was going to die from a brain tumor. The author later described the novel thusly; "a jeu d'esprit knocked off for money in three weeks, it became known as the raw material for a film which seemed to glorify sex and violence." It did indeed.
