The Outrage of Christ

THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST by Nikos Kazantzakis was a revelation for a young Catholic boy living on the South Shore of Boston in 1967. I found the book in our town library next to his successful novel ZORBA THE GREEK. The blurb on the dust cover shockingly declared that Kazantzakis had written this book to argue the innate weakness of the flesh in the Son of God. Works of heresy had traditionally been  banned in Boston throughout the 1950s. The lack of due date stamps within the front cover revealed that book had never been read by anyone in my town. I stuck it under my arm and walked to the check-out counter.

"This book has been here over seven years." The librarian examined THE LAST TEMPTATION, as if she had never seen it before. She opened the pages to the publishing date. "It was published in 1955. The Greek and Catholic Churches condemned it."

"Maybe it had been in hiding." I was a weekly visitor to the library. The librarian was familiar with my reading habits. She allowed me to withdraw adult books without question.

"ZORBA THE GREEK was very popular. Any time someone makes a movie from a book, people come into the library to read it. Afterward I have to hear how the book was better or the movie was better."

"THE TEN COMMANDMENTS were better than the book."

I had seen the Bible epic at the South Shore Drive-In with my parents. I hadn't told them that I was a non-believer. An admission like that earned the belt from my mother.

"That's almost sacrilegious." She frowned from behind her desk, then laughed, "I was kidding. I liked THE TEN COMMANDMENTS better too. Let me know how this book is."

I left and read the entire novel over the weekend.

On Saturday night my older brother came into the bedroom and grabbed it out of my hands. He asked if it was a dirty book.

"No." Kazantzakis offered an intoxication of heresy more heady than sex.

Frunk threw the book on my bed.

Then what good is it?"

"None, I guess," I laid back on the pillows and returned to ancient Judea.

The author contradicted the very teachings of the Church. Jesus was a man. He succumbed to the pleasure of Mary Magdalene. The devil tore at his soul. After surviving the crucifixion Messiah fled in India and lived a long life, unfortunately it was all a dream and he woke to find himself nailed to the cross. Kazantzakis' suggestions created a Fifth Testament complementing my juvenile atheistic version of the last chapters of the New Testament..

Jesus had been crucified on the cross. The Romans had declared him dead, but he had been in a coma. After the earthquake had opened his tomb, the apostles had discovered him alive and declared him the Son of God. Jesus had believed them until Thomas had returned from India.

The missing apostle to the unhealed wounds in Jesus' feet and hands and told his friend that if the Romans had done this once, then they will complete the job, if they found him alive. Jesus hadn't come back from the dead to be re-crucified and he fled to India with Thomas, his mother, and Mary Magdalene.

My version was unfounded heresy, until I later read in VS Naipul's AMONGST THE BELIEVERS that a tomb existed in Northern India containing the body of a holy man from Judea. Yuz Asaf or Issar had been a healer and lived to the age of 127. Muslims in Kashmir revered the tomb as the final resting place of Mary. Craved footprints of Yuz Araf's gravestone bore wounds in the feet.

More heresy.

In 1988 Martin Scorcese released THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST. The movie was banned in the Philippines and Singapore and a Paris cinema was firebombed by Christian extremists. Thirteen spectators were injured in the attack. The same number of people at the Last Dinner.

Christians are very sensitive about any questioning of the divinity of Jesus or blasphemous exploitation of his image.

The controversial photo PISS CHRIST earned Richard Serrano a brimstone outrage for its use of urine. The artist received hate mail and death threats. His grants were cancelled, despite counter-protests for the freedom of speech as guaranteed by the American Constitution. The work was thoroughly trashed by Christian Fundamentalists in France that Spring and they have mounted a similar campaign against a Paris theater for showing a play in which a portrait of Jesus is covered in shit at the end of the play.

Outrage.

As an atheist I refrain from attacking anyone's religion.

If belief in a mythical Nailed God happifies the believers, so be it, but if they seek to change the way I think, then I'll resist the bible-thumpers and jihadists every step of the way.

And here's how.

Why did Jesus cross the road?

Because he was nailed to the chicken!

Yes, if there is a Hell, we're all going to go there.

I think that comes from a Curtis Mayfield song.

And I found Hell's address in THE LAST TEMPTATION on Wikipedia.

IT'S IN THE STATE OF MICHIGAN.

From a 1960s postcard.     “HELL MICH. Greetings from Hell. Mich. Hell, Michigan can be reached from U-96, 15 miles South of the Pinckney Exit or from I-94, 12 miles from either the Baker Road Exit thru Dexter, or the Chelsea Exit thru Unadilla, Michigan.

Once more thanks to Wikipedia.

Burning In Hell

2016 From David Henderson: The most coherent explanation for global warming I have ever heard. Courtesy of Mr Peter Nolan Smith

"People have abandoned the Bible and now are going to hell in record numbers. Every year millions of American sinners are condemned to a blazing eternity. Most of these sinners are fat from eating at Mickey D's and TGIF. Many of these damned are obese. These record numbers of the tortured wicked beneath the Earth have increased the temperature of Hell. Fat sinners burn hot. Hell is hotter. The earth is hotter. Pure science. Repent Christians and save the planet from Climate Change.

As for atheists we don't go to Hell.

We chill in the limbo of nothingness.

Heaven and Hell 1999

Hell and Heaven are the same place. And it is also possible to die in the next world, for it has boundaries unlike this universe. Mysteries are not solve and the body can deteriorate over time, which flows in giant spirits in the blink of an eye. You can experience every second or miss thirty years at a go, losing all contact with the people you were last with. The world are fantastic, but crowded with decaying figures of people forgetting where they are and what they doing.

Nothingness is a constant threat. I traveled with my brother and sisters and you can exist at any age, although your mind holds the mentality of adulthood most of the time. Heaven comes when you forget everything you know and are able to be that child you were without knowing any better, but sooner or later the reality of where you are sinks in and you fades from everyone's consciousness, until you wake in your state of decay. There's food and you must eat it or else you'll waste away. It as everything materializes and dematerializes without any plans. There are no devils to torment you, just people and more people.

I made love to a woman who have shifted all over the age bracket, as if she were daydreaming about her life and I guess that was why we shift into different ages. Our bodies are represented by various stages of age and you can only maintain that appearance for short periods of time. Maybe this place was more purgatory than Heaven, and Hell was a place no one wanted to go, but to which you could escape, when you couldn't take purgatory any longer. Heaven. It seemed like no one went to Heaven, because time had not yet come to a halt. Nothing gets finished. Nothing really gets done.

Friends come in and out of view, but maybe before they met you, so you don't recognize each other. Purgatory is a strange kaleidoscope. No one wants to be there, but there are those who handle it better than others and there are also predators seeking out people to revenge events in the living world.

No one talked about God, but there must have been some haven for the moderately religious or that anyone religious goes to another purgatory or straight to heaven. There was little discussion other than about living and trying to replicate the world from before, but everything always falls apart or scares you so much that you want it all to end, though there is no suicide and every attempts to kill yourself other than to fade into oblivion like a decaying corpse.

Surprisingly the place doesn't smell, in fact the only senses you seem to have are sight, sound, and touch, though not enough to receive pleasure. Fear comes from the predators who can't really hurt you, but are convinced that they can make this hell for the waitees. In the end everyone forgets even about the end and only those fighting to remember what they were remain human instead of joining the temporary nothingness.

But none of this have any idea how to save this world or what the result will be at the judgment day. Maybe when you fade away you head back to this universe to lend your lifeforce to something else and the reason you fight is that you're frightened about the unknown, which is why you remain here in this coil.

Holiday In Hell

A holy Iman dies in peace. He is astounded to be welcomed by St. Peter at the Pearly Gates.

“Sorry about the no 72 virgins. In this heaven we spend our days in the glory of God, who is non-denominational. You’ll meet the truly blessed evolving into the truly blissed.”

The Iman accepts this heaven in all its goodness, but after a few weeks he goes up to St. Peter and says, “Heaven is great, but all those years on Earth when I was preaching about the horrors of Hell, I was often curious what Hell was actually like.”

“Pretty much as you envisioned it.”

“IS there anyway I can see it?” The Iman was more than slightly bored with the communal utopia of Heaven.

“Of course there is.” St Peter opens the Pearly Gates and points to a set of endless stairs. “You can visit Hell on a one-time visa. Two weeks. Do anything you want. You earned this holiday by all the goodness you create on earth. Get it out of your system and then return to the bosom of the Creator.”

“And I can go now?”

“Anytime you want?” St. Peter walks the Iman to the stairs. He is greeted by doe-eyed houris and escorted to a bar where Jimi Hendrix is playing LITTLE WING. Hitler painting the walls and Marilyn Monroe working upstairs in the Satan a Go Go. It’s great fun and time passes in the blink of an eye. The Iman says goodbye to everyone and climbs the steps to the Pearly Gates.

“So how was it?” St. Peter asks peering down the stairs.

“Not like I expected it.”

“Well, at least you got it out of your system. Back to the eternity of bliss.”

Unfortunately his holiday infected the Iman. He can’t stop thinking about hell. Heaven is all communing with the great oneness. He goes back to St. Peter and asks if there’s a way he could go back to Hell.

“Sure, but if you go you can’t come back.”

The Iman looks over his shoulder at the fleecy clouds and praying angels.

“No problem.”

“See you on Judgment Day.” St. Peter is all smiles like a dealer selling a hot shot and so is the Iman as he walks down the stairs, although this time the houris greet him with pitchforks. Fire laps his legs. His flesh is torn open by the demons.

“St. Peter, this isn’t the Hell I knew. Why’s it so different now.”

St. Peter shouts from the Pearly Gates, “That’s the difference between going someplace on vacation and living there.”

Ice Cream In Winter

Even ice cream melts in hell.

Possessed By Demons

The faithful of the Church foster strict ideas about Go-Go girls, angels, demons, and the Devil.

Go-go girls lead to Hell. Angels protect men from temptation. Demons tempt a good man into a trap. The Devil loves recruiting a lost sinner. Only personal will can save a man from damnation, however I keep on forgetting the tell the believers that there is no Hell.

Not on earth.

Not in outer space.

Hell will never see this sinner.

I shall live forever in sin.

Hail 666.

No Beer In Hell

Some things never change, especially if those in charge never change, and today the Vatican re-afformed that atheists such as myself are going to Hell to contradict the new Pope supposedly saying that non-believers could be saved through Christ if they do good. Hell is hell for the Holy Roman Church and in the words of the soul singer Curtis Mayfield, "If Hell's down below, then we're all gonna go." Not me, because I don't believe in Hell. Of course I'll be drinking cold beer before my death just in case there is a Hell, because there will be no cold beer in Hell. Only salty popcorn at a crowded cineplex with gun fiends shooting up sinners. Fuck the Vatican. There won't be any beer in their Heaven.

Heaven On This Earth

Heaven is where the police are Thai, the chefs are Mexican, the mechanics are Robots, the lovers are busy elsewhere so you can drink in peace and everything is organized by anarchists. And Hell is what you make it. Fuck the filth. Free Ireland.
