Mommie Dearest - 2017

And what's so funny about that aspiration?

The news media once more are complaining about the hookers lining the highways for the fat white men in the Hummers. Football, hookers, and Hummers. Nothing says America more than that other than dropping the rent in $1 bills at a strip club.

In 2009 the mayor of Tampa arrested scores of free-lancers during Super Bowl week.

Everyone called him a 'wimp'.

Real fat white men know that they pay for it.

One way or the other.

But the truth of the matter is that there is no proof about a hooker invasion for the Super Bowl.

More alternative universe thinking, so my advice is simple

"Hey, mommie, work that pole."

It's the American way, because that's one job they can't offshore to India.

Times Square Babylon Then

Rent boys.

Hookers on the Strip.

Flesh peddlers.

Martinis at Hojos.

And let's not forget the pimps.

Now Babylon is no more.

But Times Square was something else in the 1970s.

And anyone who wandered that chasm of sin knew that all too well.

SNOW-WHIGGITY by Gianni Rage

Gianni Rage posted this poesie. It tells of a time of the back then before the rich ruled Manhattan. It was our city and for a good reason. People like hookers, pimps, and dope fiends. They protected us from the rich. enjoy SNOW-WHIGGITY by Gianni Rage It doesn't have a title ironically, that was not really a poem…I was going to write it as poesies but opted for something more linear and prosaic…I will definitely have a look at this!!I am almost like a changed man with this weather…I feel like writing tonight… A fairytale. About a hooker. A hooker named Snow-Whiggity… This is back in the day when NYC was actually still a city, not a giant terrarium… The whole thing takes place on 23rd St. Snow-Whiggity has a mean, gay pimp named Evil Queen… She wants to get away from him but it is hard because she is a dope fiend. Then she is hired for a party by "seven little men"---seven very small Puerto Ricans…. They are so impressed with her that they let her live in their social club on 9th Ave. Snow-Whiggity has it made…she can now turn all of her tricks in comfort…and keep her own damn money 'cuz the little men don't ask her for nothin' She even does a porno flick with them as a laugh. But Evil Queen finds her and manages to slip her a hot shot… She turns blue and goes unconscious, and the seven little men think she is dead. So they do the only thing you could do with a dead junkie hooker in those days, which is drag her dead ass down to the West Side Highway and make it look like a hit-and-run… But the little men like her too much to be that cold. So they lay her in an old refrigerator box and pin a note to it. But of course she is not actually dead, the dope was just REAL GOOD… And she wakes up to find a brand new, handsome, young, straight pimp named Prince Charming leaning over her… And the seven little men take out Evil Queen. And everybody lives happily ever after

SHADOWS OF THE COMBAT ZONE by Peter Nolan Smith

In the late 60s lower Washington Street was anointed Boston's Combat Zone for sex and sin. Working-class drinking dives became go-go bars named the Naked I and Two O'Clock Lounge. Gay clubs like Jacques and The Other End flourished freely in the alleys. Porno theaters openly screened XXX-rated to enthralled men and the cops ceased to persecute the flesh trade, so hookers plied their trade in front of Goodtime Charlie's on La Grange Street.

Everyone was getting their cut.

The Mafia, the bartenders, the pimps, the musicians, and the taxi drivers scored cash off these strippers and hookers.

They were a gold mine.

From 5pm to 2am the hookers strutted their stuff. Hospital workers, lawyers, firemen, and sailors loved them and the girls loved them back for a price.

A quickie was $20.

An hour ran $50.

Showgirls cost a lot more.

The nearest hotel was the Avery, although most johns opted for the short-time rooms above Goodtime Charlie's.

Sherri was the hottest girl in the Combat Zone. The blonde's long legs stretched out of tight hot pants and her cupcakes breasts popped under a tube top. Platform heels transformed the 18 year-old into an Amazon.

She was better than good.

Sherri was wicked.

But she was far from easy.

Sherri was a freelancer in the Combat Zone. Many pimps tried to recruit the freelancer into their stables, but the blonde teenager was too hot for a single man and the police protected her for the sheer pleasure of her smile.

A few of the go-go dancers offered Sherri competition, but they needed beer, booze, and a three-piece band to create her aura of lust. The trios of sax, organ, and drum played low-down soul and the dancers loved grinding flesh to James Brown covers.

The strippers danced like ballerinas on 'Ludes.

It was a true art form.

Bad people walked on Washington Street

The Combat Zone had dark alleys. Crazy Jack was the King of the Shadows. No one was scarier on those back streets.

Crazy Jack was running ten girls. The pimp treated them bad. He asked Sherri to be his queen. She told him 'no' every day of the week and Crazy Jack wasn't happy hearing those nos.

Sailors from the navy Yard haunted the go-go bars. The girls never fell in love with them. Sailors had sweethearts in every port. One lieutenant said he loved Sherri.

"I bet you say that to all the girls."

"Only you, Sherri. Only you."

It almost sounded true.

Sam had gold braid on his shoulders.

He was an officer and a gentleman.

Normally Sherri ended her nights at the Hillbilly Ranch across from the bus station. The 45s on jukebox were mostly country-western. Hustlers drank at the bar and none of midnight cowboys queers bothered her.

A gin and tonic cost $1 and she liked the music on the jukebox.

Sherri came from the South. She never said where, but she listened a lot to Patsy Cline.

The Hillbilly Ranch was her home away and after work she pulled on a red wig to be someone other than herself.

Boston's bars closed at 2am. Combat Zone was empty by 3. Sherri walked out of the Hillbilly Ranch at 3:10. The owner asked if she needed a cab. She shook her head. "I'll walk."

Her apartment was short walk across the Commons on Beacon Hill.

She took a shortcut down an alley. Someone followed her into the darkness. Sherri walked faster, then heard a wet smack.

Crazy Jack lay out cold on the sidewalk.

The sailor was walking the other way.

She called out to Sam.

"You want to have a coffee?"

"Sure."

"I'll meet you at the coffee shop in ten minutes." Sam walked away into the shadows.

Where she didn't ask.

Nine minutes later Sherri checked at the clock. Sam was almost late.

A girl like her didn't wait more than fifteen.

She had someplace to be.

And that someplace was bed.

The Ghosts Of Time Square

Throughout 70s and 80s the Times Square was a haven for XX theaters, go-go girls, pimps, whore houses, rent boys, hustlers, thieves, dealers, and lowlifes on the make. Police and city authorities had basically declared the area as DMZ for crime and sex and the 1977 debut of Show World across 42nd Street from the Port Authority Bus Terminal was the highwater mark for the Doo-Wop as the salubrious way was called by its malevolent denizens.

Successive mayors attempted to clean up Times Square, but the Mafia-owned establishment relied on the Free Speech Amendment to protect their wicked fiefdom. Finally Rudy Giuliani enacted in new adult zoning laws in 1995 and the end came the following year with the closure of every XXX theaters and porno shops.

I happened to be walking through the neighborhood on that rainy day. Affectionados of perversity were crying on the sidewalk, as the moving crews loaded their merchandise onto trucks. Their patrons stood outside in tears chanting, “Fuck Mickey Mouse.” A friend of mine lamented the disappearance of Times Square. “NYC has been thrown into a blender and homogenized into a bland and boring urban pastiche. This city once had character and disparate neighborhoods. Now it’s just numbingly the same wherever you go. I was driving around the city yesterday and occurred to me that downtown-uptown, west-east, it all looked the same now. Same store fronts, same hideous developer apartment buildings, same gourmet coffee, same gentrifications, same same….shame.” My friend wasn't speaking about egg creams and luncheonettes. All that wickedness is gone like the Wicked Witch of the West melting in the WIZARD OF OZ.

But thanks for the memories.
