Give Peace A Chance 2015

Back in the last century Richie Boy, Ronnie D, and I were surfing in the Hamptons. The day ended with beers on the beach. A fire from driftwood warmed our bones and we rehashed old stories, as the sun sank over the salt marsh. Richie Boy's girlfriend asked us to pose for a picture. We stood together in our wetsuits.

Dawn said, "One-two-three." and clicked a photo.

"Stop that," a man shouted from the hightide line. He was British and older than us. "I don't want any photos taken."

"Who the fuck is taking photos of a loser like you?" I yelled back and Richie Boy started laughing, "You idiot, that's Paul McCartney."

"Asshole," I muttered under my breath, as the old Beatle waddled down the beach with his wife. Linda looked ill. He was protecting her and I regretted my muttered words. Hecwas a good man, despite having written ROCKY RACCOO. I was never a McCartney fan and in 2008 he showed his true colors by playing John Lennon's GIVE PEACE A CHANCE at a show in Tel Aviv. Maybe one day the young Zionists will listen, although I think IMAGINE is much more effective a song for peace.

Peace on Mars and Earth.

WE ARE US 2023

No silent night
No peace on Earth
Like Lennon said
Imagine Imagine Imagine
Imagine no more them
Imagine no more us
Imagine only we are the world
We are us. We are us.
From the mountains
And the valleys
To the Oceans
All around the world.
No more prayers
No more thoughts
Only the silence of guns
And Peace on Earth
From the Jordan River
To the Ukraine
An End To the wars
Everywhere
Nothing but peace
For the children of now
For the children of the future
For we who were once children

Peace around the world.
Imagine
It's easy if you try
Lennon sang that then
Let's sing it together now.
All together now
All tomorrows
All together now
We areus
All of us
Like it or not.

Imagine John

Almost 32 years ago Mark Chapman bought CATCHER IN THE RYE at a NY book store. He wrote 'this is my statement' and 'Holden Caufield'. Around 5pm John Lennon exited from the building with his wife Yoko Ono. Chapman introduced himself and held out a Lennon LP. Later that evening John returned to the Dakota and Chapman shot him five times in anger over the ex-Beatle's statement that he was more famous than Jesus Lennon was pronounced dead at 11:07 pm at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center. He did not rise on the third day. None of the Beatles were God. Since conviction for murder Chapman was been imprisoned in Attica and most recently transferred to Wende Correctional Facility, another maximum security facility. He had been denied parole on six occasions and this week he goes before the board a seventh time. Yoko Ono in fear for her sons is firmly against his release as are many Beatles and Lennon fans. The only forgiveness comes from members of his evangelical church. They are Christians and Chapman has stated if paroled, "I would immediately try to find a job, and I really want to go from place to place, at least in the state, church to church, and tell people what happened to me and point them the way to Christ." I called up all my friends who answered their phone and they said, "No parole." One went as far as saying, "Hang him in the square." I have to admit it sounds like a good idea. Imagine.

The Olympics Truce

Last summer Lord Michael Bates set out from Greece to promote a world truce during the London Olympics. In early December I met the long-distance trekker in Luxembourg and shared his walk for twenty kilometers on the shoulder of a busy motorway in the rain. At the top of a hill I spied the approach of a black rain curtain and caught the next bus back to the warm comforts of Luxembourg. Lord Bates persevered through the worsening weather across Belgium, France, and England. A little after the New Year he arrived at the House of Lords and presented his petition to his peers. They applauded his efforts and submitted his request to the proper channels. Britain as host nation to the Olympics could not sign the truce as they are at war in Afghanistan along with their ally, the USA. Syria attended the event, despite a brutal campaign to suppress rebels against the regime. Israel showed up with no apologies for its oppression of the Palestinian people along with many other conflict-riven states. Lord Bates' truce might have been ignored by these countries, but the majority of the competitors have peace with the world; Bhutan, Laos, Belize, Costa Rica, Switzerland, Sweden, Bolivia, Botswana just to name a few. We can only hope that the rest will follow their example and that of Lord Michael Bates. IMAGINE by John Lennon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRhq-yO1KN8
