The Measure of Happiness - 2012

Last month my sister, her husband, and I celebrated my 60th with lobsters, steamers, Pinot Grigio on Watchic Pond. An early evening breeze fended off the mosquitos from the dock. My brother-in-law dressed accordingly; tee-shirt, shorts, and no shoes. Neither of us had shaved for days.

"What you think?" My brother-in-law pulled out a pipe. His health had improved dramatically since his retirement three years ago.

"Nothing much has changed here." The lake shore was covered by tall pines, hiding the numerous summer camps.

"That's what I think too." My sister and he planned to spend the summer here not doing much of anything. David passed the lit pipe. Native Maine bud from Cornish, the nearest town to the west on Route 25. "Change is good as long as it doesn't change the things you love."

"If things don't change, then I feel like I'm aging with the world." A puff of weed helped color the sunset.

"A slow pace makes time stand still." David had been a top headhunter in Boston. Work had been an 8 to 6 race. He loved his new life. Waking with the dawn with his day free for himself.

"In this light you look 30."

I had taken off my glasses. Myopia was a great fountain of youth.

"That's what I like to hear from my guests." David took off his shirt. The sun had tanned him to golden brown hue. My sister admired his physique. He was in better shape than me.

"My pleasure. Only one thing I miss."

"Your kids." My sister knew the way I thought.

Angie and Fenway are on the other side of the world. Talking on the telephone brings us closer. I would prefer to hold my son and daughter in my arms. She's 8 and he's almost 4. I had spoken to both this morning on Skype.

"I'll be there soon enough." I had a flight to Thailand planned for mid-June. I was staying two months, but today's happiness index suffered from their absence and I went to sleep a little sad.

The next morning rain splashed on the lake. New York exerted a tug and I checked the schedule of the train from Portland to Boston.

"You're leaving?"

"I got to get ready for my trip."

"How you getting to Portland?" The station lay below western promenade.

"If necessary I'll hitchhike." Yesterday's plan was for a tomorrow departure. The weather dictated a change.

"No one hitchhikes anymore." My brother-in-law wanted me to stay. We enjoy each other's company,

"Only crazy men." I had seen the ghostly wraiths of rags on highways. No destination in mind. Mime was the other side of the world.

"It's not the 70s." The Seventies were the decade of our 20s. "Hitchhiking is dead."

"I know." I had often hitchhiked across the USA, sometimes for pleasure and sometimes out of necessity. Pleasure and necessity had combined forces in August 1972. A fellow BC student Neil Nepola had been visiting his girlfriend, Vickie, in Tulsa. His BMW was to be our ride to California and I had thumbed through the Midwest spurred by the dreams of driving through the deserts in a fast car.

I arrived in Oklahoma to discover that we were on foot. Neil had rubber-necked a roller coaster in Oklahoma City and rear-ended a Chevy. The BMW was in repair shop awaiting parts. We were stuck in Tulsa without a car.

Tulsa was half-way across the continent. Vikie, her younger sister, Neil, and I drank ourselves senseless in a few of city's BYOB bars before voting to keep on trucking. We were 21. We had long hair. Neil was going to Med school in the fall. In the Philippines. After reading ON THE ROAD. The two of us bade good-bye to Tulsa, Vickie, and her younger sister. Funny I can remember Marilyn's name. She had green eyes.

We reached the coast at the end of Route 66 and stayed with Neil’s cousin in Seal Beach. We smoked more pot, bodysurfed, and drank at a bar next to the Long Beach Channel. A week flashed fast in a paralytic ganga haze. His cousin’s name is lost in that miasma.

Two weeks remained until the resumption of BC’s fall semester. I wanted to see my friend, Wayne Shephard in Pomona. It was far from the coast. He was living with his biker brother. They took us to DisneyWorld. We smoke weed in IT’S A SMALL WORLD. I couldn't have been happier, then again Disneyworld prides itself on being the “the happiest place on earth.”

This distinction has changed locations for me many times since 1972.

Goa, Koh Phi Phi, Bali, Palm Beach, Paris, Bar Harbor.

Sri Racha with Mam and Fenway.

But all places become common the first day you buy a roll of toilet paper, because the daily grind wears down the degree of happiness and you ask yourself, “Who is really happy?"

Several studies have named the Danes as the happiest people in the world. They're family people. They like nothing more than a hoogy or get-together. Danes ride bikes. Pedal . They have no basketball superstars. The USA is 15th in the rankings.

The main source of happiness comes from a feeling of belonging and in western society cars separate us from those we love. Marshall McLuhan says the only time western man is truly alone is when he’s in his car. Cell phones are supposed to bring us closer, except no one answers them. Every man is not so much an island as a desert of feeling.

Drive in the suburbs.

The landscape of emptiness.

Not a restaurant open.

Not a bar where ‘everyone knows your name’.

Only the mall where you’re forced to consume everything you don’t really need.

Friends, family, the pursuit of happiness, which is why I love Thailand.

Not for the sex.

Not for the weather.

But for the warmth of drinking, eating, and talking with your friends and Thais only score 43rd on the list.

Both Thailand and the USA could do better.

Be happy. Mi sabaii.

The other choices are too gray to consider as viable alternatives.

Happiness is more than a warm blanket – Snoopy

As Victor Borge said, "To measure your happiness feel your heart."

We all know where it is.

My Loved Nana

My Nana came off the boat from Ireland at the age of 14.

She broke her heel coming down the gangway.

Somehow everything turned out all right in that Year of the Crow.

The native of the West refused to pinpoint the date.

We thought the Year of the Crow had something to do with Chinese Astrology.

Nana loved us more than the moon and the stars.

All of the thirteen cousins.

We were her family.

We still are__

Anne Walsh Nolan 1954

My Nana left County Mayo and came off the boat from Ireland at the age of 14. Boston. She broke the heel of her right shoe coming down the gangway. Her only pair. Her Uncle Father Mike was waiting to take her into servitude for a rich family in Salem. She spoke no English.

Somehow everything turned out all right in that Year of the Crow. The native of Western Ireland refused to pinpoint the date. We thought the Year of the Crow had something to do with Chinese Astrology. A friend from Florida thought she might have native Crow in her blood. To this day we know nothing.

Nana loved us more than the moon and the stars.

All of the thirteen cousins.

We were her family.

We still are and will be as are was and will be all our generation.

pps Her marriage license from 1919 to Peter Nolan, my namesake, in Boston notes her age as 26. He was a trainman and she was a housewife. Twenty-six years from 1919 pushes her date of birth into the 19th Century. 1883 in County Mayo if family legend is correct.

SQUARES by Peter Nolan Smith

Who here has shot at someone? Who here has been in jail? Who here has been beaten by the police? Who here has cried after a mother's death? A father's death? A friend's death?

The birth of a child?

Who here listens? Who here sees? Who here speaks? Who here feels?

We all have these gifts. To use our senses to get at the truth, That Life is all there is. Birth, life, death. The circle.

One last question.

Who here is a square? You have heard the question. You know the answer. Only one answer will redeem you.

Love.

To love is to not be a square. Take it from me, Because I can answer all my questions with a single response.

I have, and, yes, I love.

It's the only answer to everything, even suffering.

The Children Of Dead Friends

Sad to say I have outlived my most dangerous friends. They challenged Life. Faces turned to destiny and death seized them for eternity.

Junkies, bank robbers, normal people and psychos lifted from life.

We cannot surrender out souls.

We must live.

Forever or until the sun don't shine.

Robot Rules Of Love

The Laws of Robotics were written by science fiction author Isaac Asimov in his story I ROBOT.

1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. 2. A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

The 1974 Lyuben Dilov novel Icarus’s Way introduced a Fourth Law of robotics:

“A robot must establish its identity as a robot in all cases.”

These laws haven’t really mattered since most robot are working in manufacturing in violation of the first three laws for having taken away the jobs of humans. Few existent robots threaten mankind, however what about breaking a man’s heart, for Japan’s trillion-yen sex industry has been selling robotic sex dolls to customers for the past decade. Each model more human that the previous mechanical succubus. The Japanese are years ahead of the American XXX industry, which is North North Hollywood like the American car industry is stuck in the past with a senseless debate about HD DVD versus Blu-Ray.

Orient Industry Co. of Japan has monthly sales of 50 silicon sex companions @ $7,000 each and a German inventor has created an even more sophisticated robot sex doll. Its heart beats faster. They can also pant and make suggestive motions during sex. The flesh of these cyber-vixen are warm to the touch. According to the inventor, “They are almost impossible to distinguish from the real thing, but I am still developing improvements and I will only be happy when what I have is better than the real thing.”

And a bargain at $4000 each and certainly cheaper than the robots Japan plans on sending to the moon in 2020. Those robots will have to have a greater AI than the one year-old intellect available today, for setting up lunar bases for human habitation.

Probably the first settlement will pay for itself if it were named Sodom.

The Valley of Lunar Dolls.

This possible nexus between man and robots designed for our sexual pleasure has been explored by in LOVE + SEX WITH ROBOTS by David Levy. The author portrays a sexscape 50 years onward where men and women will have adjusted to the idea of love and not only sex with robots. An easy jump of faith. Most people readily confused lust with love. Ignorance of 4th Law of Robotics is simply an adaptation of the present Pentagon policy on homosexual soldiers.

“Don’t ask. Don’t tell.”

Not many robot owners will be asking questions of a machine capable of satisfying your every fantasy without the guilt associated with perversion.

“I am talking about loving relationships about 40 years from now. When there are robots that have also emotions, personality, consciousness. They can talk to you, they can make you laugh. They can … say they love you just like a human would say ‘I love you’, and say it as though they mean it.” according to David Levy.

Just like a woman.

“But for loving relationships — that is something completely different. In loving relationships there are many more things that are important. And the most difficult of all is conversation. You want your robot to be able to talk to you about what is interesting to you. You want a partner who has some similar interest to you, who talks to you in a manner that pleases you, who has a similar sense of humor to you.”

So she has to laugh at your jokes.

It gets better and better, but I don’t think I’ll be around 40 years from now, so I’ll have to make do with my wives. At least of them thinks I’m funny and the other like to make love to me.

What more can a man ask for from a woman?

Silence?

Certainly not sadism, because that is impossible according to the 1st Law of Robotics.

Man will always have to depend on that pain of pleasure from a woman.

It is in their nature.

Seven Months of Limbo

In 1977 I left Boston for New York.

I stayed until 1982.

Paris was my next stop.

I traveled the world over the next thirty years.

The Yucatan, the Luberon, Asia, Africa, South America.

Now due to the Covid-19 pandemic I am imprisoned in New York without any chance of escape by plane, train, car, foot, or ship like I have been sentenced to minimum-security prison without any parole in sight. I am not alone. Millions of us are locked down by a government without any solution to this crisis. I want to go to Europe. I want to see my children in Thailand. I want to be free.

None of are now.

Prisoners.

When will we see freedom again?

When we all dance together?

One day we will be able to say tomorrow.

Lilacs

The director Blake Edwards passed away in late December 2011. His greatest hits were BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S, 10, and VICTORIA VICTORIA. Fame fled him in the 80s, but his star rose on Broadway with the success of a musical version of VICTORIA VICTORIA. My cousin was Julie Andrews' understudy. Tara got to perform the leading role on several occasions. I caught her once with the rest of my family. After the performance my aunts and mother asked what Julie Andrews was like.

"She calls me 'darling'." Tara was enthralled by the superstar's allure.

I didn't have the heart to tell her that she probably called everyone 'darling', because she never remembered anyone's name, although Julie Andrews' must have had a pet name for Blake Edwards. They were married for 41 years.

Before they met, he explained her success to a gathering at a party by saying, "She has lilacs in her pubic hair."

And having seen them once, he never wandered again.

Faithful to the end.

This is the power of pussy.

THE FAITHFULNESS OF LIES by Peter Nolan Smith

Several years ago my friend, Sam Royalle, suspected his girlfriend was seeing another man.

"How do you know that?" Farangs don't understand how hard it was for a Thai woman to be with a westerner.

They don't speak the same language. Their tastes in food, movies, music, and humor were complete opposites. No matter how hard a Thai woman worked to be farang she will always be Thai and vice versa.

"She's always late."

"Thais are always late." Thai girlfriends normally were having too much fun doing what they're doing to be with their farang.

"She never answers her phone."

"Bad coverage." I knew all the excuses.

"That's what she said."

Not answering her phone was very suspect. Thais love speaking on the phone. Actually they love the sound of their voices, if only to not have silence, since silence opens the door for ghosts and nothing scares a Thai more than the thought of a ghost or 'phew'.

"And she comes home smelling like she just showered."

"Thais like being clean." I always have suspected that Thai girls shower after sex to erase any evidence of sex, although the Thai police insisted that criminals can't leave fingerprints on another body.

"It could be nothing."

"It wouldn't bother me if he was farang, but I think he's Thai." Sam had more than a hunch. He had seen a Thai man driving his car. She had said it was her cousin. The possibility of this being the truth was about .0001%, because Thai women in a relationship with farangs gravitated to Thai men for the comfort of a shared culture. I regarded the situation more as polygamy than infidelity.

One world Thai.

One world farang.

Can't we live together as one?

I learned the hard way that the answer is no.

Sam's girlfriend confessed to having an affair with a Thai man. Said he was a long-time friend.

"Said it was only three months."

"Maybe."

Sam Royalle threw her out of the house without torturing her to find out if it was three months or six.

"She'll be back when she breaks up with him."

"Okay."

Thai women always have a boyfriend in the background. 100% and this week a German farang hung himself rather than leave his girlfriend alone. Suicide was the only way he could be sure she didn't cheat on him.

What is wrong with these farangs?

Magic love potions?

I was poisoned with one and the only remedy is to have a woman stand over a pot of steaming rice and have her sweat drip into the pot and eat it. The rice tastes a little fishy, but I think it works and certainly would save a lot of people from a death before their time.

For those desperate men ask the cook for Khao nam-lai puying.

The life you save maybe your own.

Why Men Come To Pattaya

I receieved this email from my friend Paul Brissman

When girls don’t put out!!

This was written by a guy … it’s pretty damn smart.

Girls — Please have a sense of humor! I never quite figured out why the sexual urge of men and women differ so much. And I never have figured out the whole Venus and Mars thing. I have never figured out why men think with their head and women with their heart. -----------------------------------------------------

FOR EXAMPLE: One evening last week, my girlfriend and I were getting into bed. Well, the passion starts to heat up, and she eventually says, “I don’t feel like it, I just want you to hold me.”

I said, “WHAT??!! What was that?!”

So she says the words that every boyfriend on the planet dreads to hear… “You’re just not in touch with my emotional needs as a woman enough for me to satisfy your physical needs as a man.”

She responded to my puzzled look by saying, “Can’t you just love me for who I am and not what I do for you in the bedroom?”

Realizing that nothing was going to happen that night, I went to sleep. The very next day I opted to take the day off of work to spend time with her. We went out to a nice lunch and then went shopping at a big, big unnamed department store. I walked around with her while she tried on several different very expensive outfits. She couldn’t decide which one to take, so I told her we’d just buy them all. She wanted new shoes to compliment her new clothes, so I said, “Lets get a pair for each outfit.”

We went on to the jewelry department where she picked out a pair of diamond earrings. Let me tell you… she was so excited. She must have thought I was one wave short of a shipwreck. I started to think she was testing me because she asked for a tennis bracelet when she doesn’t even know how to play tennis. I think I threw her for a loop when I said, “That’s fine, honey.”

She was almost nearing sexual satisfaction from all of the excitement. Smiling with excited anticipation, she finally said, “I think this is all dear, let’s go to the cashier.”

I could hardly contain myself when I blurted out, “No honey, I don’t feel like it.”

Her face just went completely blank as her jaw dropped with a baffled, “WHAT?”

I then said, “Honey! I just want you to HOLD this stuff for a while. You’re just not in touch with my financial needs as a man enough for me to satisfy your shopping needs as a woman.”

And just when she had this look like she was going to kill me, I added, “Why can’t you just love me for who I am and not for the things I buy you?”

Apparently I’m not having sex tonight either….but at least that bitch knows I’m smarter than her.

Alright Ladies. Forward this if you agree. Hell even if you disagree, forward it anyway. Men, forward this if you have BALLS !!!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
I left this letter unedited. It’s too perfect for words.
