LA Without Cars

Only losers walk in LA. Pedestrians camouflage their carlessness by carrying keys in their hands to avoid questioning by the LAPD. No car means bad people to the cops of the Southland.

Whitey Bulger, the Southie outlaw, didn't have a car in Santa Monica.

He was a bad man.

A snitch too.

I lived in LA without a car in 1995. The bus from North Hollywood was my mode of transportation. It dropped me off at Santa Monica Boulevard, where another bus took me to work at the Milk Bar in Beverly Hills. My co-workers were befuddled by my resistance to not drive a car.

"Walking in LA gets you nowhere."

That was true, but I wasn't walking anywhere. Road rage was in vogue. Standing at the bus stops I studied the faces of the imprisoned drivers. Only 1 in a hundred was happy. The rest wore expressions of grim determination, as if they were running a life-or-death gauntlet rather than driving to work or home.

Traffic on the freeways was a nightmare.

The antithesis of the open road and this past weekend in LA newscasters had been predicting vehicular chais for the City of Angels, as road crews were scheduled to tear down the Mullholland Bridge over the 405 Freeway in order to widen the carpool lane. Pundits had nicknamed the 53-hour closure 'Carmageddon' after the violent car video game based on the 1975 movie DEATH RACE 2000.

The mayor begged Angelenos to stay of the roads and Jet Blue offered a $9 flight from Burbank to LAX. The construction will basically the Valley Girls from Hollywood.

Oh, the horror, however the actual event was a blessing in disguise. Cars disappeared from the freeways and the smog lifted from the LA Basin to reveal the true beauty of Southern California. A group of bicyclists raced a Jet Blue flight from Burbank to LAX. They arrived at the international airport in 90 minutes. The Jet Blue flight reached its destination twenty minutes later.

Death to cars.

This is only the beginning.

17 Cents Per Gallon

Shared events are recorded differently in individual memories. No one in my family recalls my mother sending her two sons, ages 7 and 6, solo on a train from Portland, Maine to Boston. Collective amnesia has erased the recollection of our family watching brown bears dine on garbage at the town dump. I am our final retainer of lost episodes in time, even if the rest of the clan shake their head like a troupe of Indian head bogglers disapproving my version of history. They may be right, but I can clearly recall the Biddeford, Maine gas war of 1958.

Two gas stations were located at the foot of the Biddeford-Saco bridge on Route 1. The road was heavily trafficked by vacationers during the summer months. The two station owners competed against one another by offering prices below the cost of the gas, hoping to bankrupt his rival. My father and many other drivers were aware of this competition and no one leaving Portland bought gas until crossing the Saco River.

Both stations were manned by slick hot-rodders. Window were wiped by cheerleaders. A free glass accompanied each fill-up.

The price dropped from 25 cents per gallon to 21 to 18 and finally 17 cents per gallon. My father detoured south from a day at Old Orchard Beach to top off the tank. The greasy-haired attendants were haggard from the onslaught of 'fill it up'. The cheerleaders' outfits were torn to rags by the sharp edges of cars ripping their uniforms. Our Ford station wagon left the pump headed north to Falmouth Foresides.

The two stations' gas war of annihilation threatened the entire gasoline structure of New England. Their respective suppliers informed the station owners that they had to agree to a truce. A price was agreed upon by all concerned parties and I've never seen 17 per gallon in my life.

I've told this story several times at BBQs on Watchic Pond. My brother-in-law wanted to believe me, but 17 cents was beyond his comprehension, especially nowadays with gas over $4/gallon. My uncle, a long-time Maine native, guffawed at the idea of 17 cents gas in 1958, but retracted his comment, saying, "When I was issued my license in 1939, gas was 10 cents a gallon."

"I was only $1.11 in 1994." My brother-in-law had a good head for numbers. He had been an accountant for the manufacturers of Topsiders before becoming a corporate head-hunter.

"And it's only 6 cents in Venezuela." Chavez was keeping it low for the people thanks to new agreements with the oil companies extracting oil from his country.

"6 cents a gallon." My brother-in-law shook his head. "Now that's cheap."

And all thanks to the triumph of socialism over capitalism.

The the victors go the spoils.

"It was more than that when I was a kid." He got his driving license in 1939.

Helter Swelter

The July night sky is clear over New York City. The evening temperature is 78 Fahrenheit. A weatherman called conditions 'pleasant'. Tomorrow the sun will warm the day to 87F. Sunday the same and Monday 89F. Hot, but not brutal like Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Those three states are in the grips of an oppressing heat wave. Meteorologists are predicting the thermometer to hit the high 100s in Okie City tomorrow and there is no relief in sight.

The Buckle of the Bible Belt has deep pockets when it comes to faith the the Oklahoma Governor beseeched the religious of the state to get on their knees and pray for rain.

"The power of prayer is a wonderful thing."

Her request echoed that the Texas Governor.

Their God responds with a deepening drought. Some of their constituents are fast to blame the weather on New York's passing the gay marriage law. Tea Party governor Scott Walker was caught in a biblical hailstorm in Denver on his way to a National Governors Association meeting in Salt Lake City. He had to sleep on the floor as flights were canceled by the Plague of Hail. None of the three issued a statement about any connection between the catastrophic heat and homosexual union.

James Inhofe, the Senator from Oklahoma and Global Warming nay-sayer, was stricken sick after a swim in the blue-green algae of Grand Lake of Oklahoma which has seen a

“That night, Monday night, I was just deathly sick.”

While calling Global Warming a hoax, the GOP senator has also expressed concern about the economic effects of regulation on agricultural run-off into his lake. His grand-daughter resisted his entreaties to join him in the water. “She didn’t want to get in that green stuff.”

Prayers for rain could lead to a hurricane hitting the Texas coast.

A small price to pay for salvation from the demonic heat.

Today is the 29th consecutive day over 90.

That is a record.

Let's hope that the prayers lead the faithful's God to replicate to Moses' 2nd Plague.

The rain of frogs.

If it's not one thing, then it's another.

MIss You Long Time - Michael Charles Smith

16 years ago my baby brother succumbed to the ravages of AIDS. I miss him every day along with the rest of my friends and family who died from that killer. I will remember them forever.

My brother's name was Michael Charles Smith.

He's the smaller blonde boy in the photo.

Always the youngest.

How to Swear in Thailand

Like most farangs I had a hard time learning Thai and only those Thais close to me can decipher what I’m trying to say with a Bostonian accent.

Conversely most of what is said to me is too fast for my ears to catch the meaning, but one day I was arguing with a woman from whom I rented a motorcycle. I had slightly scratched the front fender. Earlier scraps graced the bike. She wanted 1000 baht to replace the fender. I knew that was too much and countered with 200. We couldn’t meet in the middle and she spat, “Yet mung.”

I’ve been called many things in many languages.

Thanks to Hollywood most nationalities know how to say ‘Fuck you’.

But every language has its own lexicon of sharp phrases.

I instantly realized she had the Thai version of the f-word, although when I asked anyone what this meant, they all said, “You can not say that.”

“You can, why can’t I?”

“Can not.” Was the only explanation.

Anytime I have since asked about swears, the Thais mostly smile and say they don’t know any bad words. I think they are lying since most swearing occurs behind the wheel of a vehicle and judging from the faces of drivers I have cut off, there seems to be a broad vocabulary for slagging off both farangs and their own countrymen.

My wife’s favorite Ngao or idiot.

Mine tends to be hua-kee or shithead, which my Thai friends say doesn’t really get anyone worked up, but was one of my hometown favorites.

In really it’s better to keep it simple and stay with what the locals use.

I advise you not to use them too often.

And be very careful no one can catch you either.

Back in the 90s a German gave a finger to a local in Chiang Mai. A year goes by and the Thai shoots the German dead. Like an elephant he had a memory. Better to use the following words against farangs. Always makes the Thais smile.

Farang ba = Stupid foreigner (we’ve all been called this).

* Yet = Fuck
* Kuay = Cock (banana also. Amazing how some words have different meanings)
* Ai sat = Twat
* Kwai = Buffalo (we all know what this means ‘MOOOOO’)
* Hoop baak = Shut up (my wife’s favorite expression when I’m talking about $)
* Orn kuay = Suck cock
* I hayer = Son of a bitch
* Gengri = Whore
* Farang keenohk = Birdshit foreigner (Actually said because you’re cheap)
* Chong mang = I don’t give a fuck
* Ga-ree = Whore, Slut
* Dollair = Bullshitter ( sort of the bad version of barg wan or sweet mouth)
* Sudd-Na-Rok = Damned Devil
* Tood-Muek = Asshole
* Gook Kuay = Damned Penis
* Na-Hee = Cuntface
* Ai Na Dad = Clit face (Very vulgar)
* Hee mah = Dog pussy
* Gratoey = Homosexual
* Yet ped = Duck fucker
* Hee = Pussy
* Baan poh mung = Bullshit (lit. your father’s house)
* Naa maw = Flirt (vulgar)
* Laew = Evil (vulgar)
* Baa = Crazy (vulgar)
* Chuk wow = (male) Masturbate (lit. fly kite) (this I understand very well)
* Tob bed = (female) Masturbate (lit. fishing) (no woman will admit to doing this)
* Kun Heeat = A lizard that eats garbage (quite vulgar!)
* Mai chawp khun, dag ling = I don’t like you, monkey arse.
* Som nam nah! = In your face! (probably the #2 Thai expression used by farangs)
* Nah peeh = Ghost face
* Hua kuai = Dickhead
* Heeh men = Smelly pussy

Caution
Don’t ever use the next eight.

I only added these so you understand what is being said to you.<

* Mung = Highly derogative form of ‘you’
* Goo = Highly arrogant form of ‘me’
* Loog-Ga-Ree = Son of the bitch
* Por Mung Tai = Wish your father dead
* Mae-Mung-Tai = Wish your mother dead
* Yed Por = Fuck your father
* Hee mae mang = Fuck your mother
* Mae mung = Your mom (yo mamma)

I only use about 4-5 of them a day unless I’m driving and then I use them all, but only with the windows shut. It’s one thing to use bad language and it’s quite although to have people hear you swear.

ps I waive all responsibility for any beatings you may receive for usage of these words.

Fat is Beautiful for Feminists

Last May Jamie Parker drove up on his motorcycle from Pattaya to Sriracha. Mutual friends back in the States had been casting aspersions against the paternity of my son. Mam had heard the same from her family. She offered to submit Fenway to a DNA test. I wasn't having any part of it. I knew he was mine, but said nothing as Jamie entered my house. Fenway was watching Ultraman. He lifted his head for a second. His eyes shifted to his mother and me. I half-expected him to cry, when Jamie picked him up in his arms. The skinny ex-convict was scary to most people, but Fenway stared him cold-blank in the eyes.

"Damn, the Thai gene is strong, but yours is stronger. I feel like I'm looking back into the past. Fuck everyone in America. They're all KKK." Jamie put down Fenway. My son returned his concentration to the cartoon. "Good-looking boy. Same as his dad."

"Thanks."

"Only telling the truth." Jamie was from New York. White Boy same as me. We knew each other 30 years. Many of them no good. The bank robber had moved to Thailand after 9/11. He spoke Thai better than me. Jamie wai-ed Mam. He pointed Fenway's and my faces. "Just like looking in a mirror."

"Thank you." Mam was grateful for the compliment, but still wanted to prove her doubters wrong. I didn't care. Fenway was handsome. Same as his father. That was good enough for me.

Mam cooked food, while Jamie and I drank Leo beer on the porch. The neighbors strolled by the house. Sricracha isn't Pattaya. Farangs are an oddity. We paid the gawkers no mind. Jamie and I were oddities back in the States too.

"How's it back in the City?"

"Okay, but the fat people are taking over America." At 90 kilos I was no longer considered overweight. My jackets had shrunk in size from XL to L. My BMI told a different story.

"That's what I heard and I blame them for Global Warming."

"How so?" I had a feeling Jamie was regurgitating some of my old blather, but I was curious about his re-interpretation.

“Think of those millions of fat people’s body temperatures and their sweating on a warm day and don’t forget about the friction of the wind hitting their plus-35 BMI.” Jamie’s previous theory about global warming had to do with Earth passing through a warmer section of outer space left over from the Creation, which got him a job with the GOP. It lasted about three weeks.

I’m much kinder to fat people, for unlike Jamie who’s very thin, I have suffered from Orson Wellesitis throughout my life. Not that I ever challenged the fakir of fat, although I once found a his cape at a Provincetown antique store. The owner wanted $200 to the circus tent. I offered him $50 cash. He turned me down, but I think about Orson often.

He was big and so is most of America. Bigger than big, however many of these over-sized people think of themselves as normal, especially the women and no one forgives these little elephants more than feminists who are constantly fighting man’s attempt to focus beauty on one ideal form ie a skinny model or a sex bomb starlet.

Skinny is not normal for feminists according to a UK study. Members of a survey shown a set of photos of women were asked to identify with the fattest and thinnest women in the photos. Most women picked fat.

After all most women are fat if only to project enough body mass to scare men from having sex with them and I can’t blame them. I wouldn’t want to have sex with me either.

Fat women of the world unite, but I have to warn them not in one place, because I wouldn’t want the crust of the Earth to collapse.

And neither would Fenway.

he still has a lot of living left in his tank.

Dr. Quack's At Your Service

Dr. Quack in Pattaya

While living in Pattaya during the 00s, I ate a a few farang restaurants; Scoby’s Pizza on Sai 3, Cap Breton on Soi Concrete, Toscana on Beach Road, and my favorite Big Al’s Taco Stand. I've been partial to South of the Border cooking ever since discovering its culinary values at the El Phoenix Lounge on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston. Chili-chorizo enchiladas drenched in eye-blinding spicy salsa cooked by a one-armed wetback. The first taste was a revelation to a young teen raised on mayonnaise sandwiches.

Big Al is an ex-extreme boxer who learned his cooking craft from extended stays with the California penal colonies.

"Try cooking good for 1000 inmates. If they think your food sucks, then it's buckshot and teargas for dessert."

Big Al's bad boy years are behind him and he gave his all to educate the farang population about proper Mexican cuisine. His business did well during the latter part of the 00s. 2008 killed my job in Pattaya. 2009 killed off his taco stand. I returned to the USA to make more cash to support my family. Big Al toughed it out in Thailand.

Money was tight, but his bigger problem was his weight. Big Al tips the scale at about 160 kilos. Steroids helped put on some of this mass. I ran into at the Buffalo Bar my last trip to Pattaya.

"You're not still taking 'roids."

“I wanted bulk for the ring.”

"Are you thinking about going back into the ring?" MMA or Mixed Martial Arts was a young man's sport. Big Al was in his 40s, then again I had seen I’ve seen his fighting VDOs. Big Al in the ring was scary bulldog tough. I had thought countless times about how I would fight him. I had been a tough guy in several cities during the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Complete submission would have been my defense against Big Al.

"No, my fighting days are over, but I got to make money somehow." Big Al was willing to do anything to prevent a return to America.

"Fighting punks ain't the answer. How are your legs?"

Big Al has been diagnosed with deep-vein thrombosis. Not hard to see why. His legs are as big as my chest and he insisted on wearing plastic clogs. Red ones. I don’t have any comments to offer Big Al on fashion. As he says, “I’m glad to find something that fits.”

Sitting at the Buffalo Big Al commented on the passing bargirls. He liked about every one he saw, then complained about penile dysfunction. “Sometimes the blood doesn’t go where it’s supposed to, so I take a Viagra.”

“Damn, those things aren’t good when you’re as heavy as you.”

“Are you a doctor?”

“No, but I’m a hypochondriac and read everything I can whenever I think I have a rare tropical disease.” My grandfather was a country doctor in Maine and I have a book from Merck about home health. I got it from my cousin David. He shot himself a couple of years back. The book doesn’t say anything about why.

“So thinking you're sick all the time makes you an expert.”

“No, just a little crazy and I never need anything to have sex.”

“I only want to make sure I don’t have a failure.”

“I can understand that, but be careful with those Indian Gels. Supposedly they open your capillaries all over your body, not only your cock. Some people say they have trouble seeing, because their eyeballs have been fucked up by the gels.”

“And you think it’s true.”

“They give me a headache and hot flashes.” I finished by drink, gave Big Al a 1000 baht, and headed home. Later that night I got a call. Big Al. “You know I’ve been thinking about what you said.”

“About what?”

“Those gels. I have trouble with blood circulation and I thought if those gels open your capillaries then they could help my blood flow better.”

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, especially if the knowledge is coming from Dr. Quack aka me, but I have no problem following bad advice with more bad advice especially if my gut reaction is that the bad advice might help.

“Al, you have blood clogs in your leg. You open up your capillaries and one of them might make its way to someplace you don’t want it to go. Namely your brain.”

“Yeah, but____” Big Al had treated himself with speed most of his life, so he was also somewhat of a self-taught doctor.

“No, yeah, buts, don’t even consider this.”

“How long did it take you to get to 160K?”

“About 6 years.” Americans think one pill can save them.

“Then you’re not going to get to a 100K in one night with a pill or gel.”

“Shit.” Big Al wanted a short cut and I offered the only one I know. “Eat at the dirtiest restaurants. Get amoebic dysentery. You’ll shit 20 kilos in a week.”

“That sounds a little extreme.” And also like he was considering this option.

“Al, I’m no doctor. Don’t do anything stupid.”

“Okay.” He hung like he was going to get a third opinion about the gels. but the next day Big Al said at a small restaurant off Soi Bongkot, “I’m going to do what the doctors tell me and not listen to you.”

“Good.” I said, then the waitress brought him a plate of fried chicken. “I thought you weren’t supposed to eat fried foods.”

“I’m only tasting it to see if it’s any good. Anything wrong with that?”

“No comment.” I didn’t want to get my license in quackery revoked and order fried chicken too. It tasted like I was going to get sick tomorrow. I could stadn to lose some weight just like Big Al and a doctor, even a quack, should know when to follow his own advice.

It's all for the best.

As for Dr. Quack doing house calls. I only hold consultations in bars.
