Bats Aflight At Night

In my youth
Long ago
I lived in the Blue Hills
South of Boston
In the summer evening
I stood
A boy of single years
In a tee shirt and khaki shorts
Overhead
Bats fluttered through the velvet night Seeking prey__
Mosquitoes who preyed on me
Hundreds
Nay
Thousands seeking my blood__
Last summer in Montauk the bats
Only a few
I wonder where they have gone
Maybe they just don't want an old man's blood
They do seek young blood
My young friends say so
As they had once sought mine
So long ago in the backyard
Of my family's house
Windows aglow blue from TV
Me watching the bats
Hunting the mosquitoes
Hunting me
Under the darkening sky
But I liked blood running down my arm
Under the wings of bats
Flutter little bats flutter__

versus BATS by DH Lawrence BY D. H. LAWRENCE

At evening, sitting on this terrace,
When the sun from the west, beyond Pisa, beyond the mountains of Carrara
Departs, and the world is taken by surprise ...

When the tired flower of Florence is in gloom beneath the glowing
Brown hills surrounding ...

When under the arches of the Ponte Vecchio
A green light enters against stream, flush from the west,
Against the current of obscure Arno ...

Look up, and you see things flying
Between the day and the night;
Swallows with spools of dark thread sewing the shadows together.

A circle swoop, and a quick parabola under the bridge arches
Where light pushes through;
A sudden turning upon itself of a thing in the air.
A dip to the water.

And you think:
"The swallows are flying so late!"

Swallows?

Dark air-life looping
Yet missing the pure loop ...
A twitch, a twitter, an elastic shudder in flight
And serrated wings against the sky,
Like a glove, a black glove thrown up at the light,
And falling back.

Never swallows!
Bats!
The swallows are gone.

At a wavering instant the swallows gave way to bats
By the Ponte Vecchio ...
Changing guard.

Bats, and an uneasy creeping in one's scalp
As the bats swoop overhead!
Flying madly.

Pipistrello!
Black piper on an infinitesimal pipe.
Little lumps that fly in air and have voices indefinite, wildly vindictive;

Wings like bits of umbrella.

Bats!

Creatures that hang themselves up like an old rag, to sleep;
And disgustingly upside down.

Hanging upside down like rows of disgusting old rags
And grinning in their sleep.
Bats!

In China the bat is symbol for happiness.

Not for me!

A THICK TONGUE

mmmmMagic
Kkkkiss
xxxxxray
ththth
A childhood stutter and stammer slurred my speech.
1950s
Falmouth Foresides Maine.
My mouth resisted the passage of ths and ghs and Ss. And ottthers.
My tongue mangled consonants vowels in my mouth.
Family and friends failed to decipher my words
Teachers thought I was stupid.
Schoolmates thought the same.
I was beaten by three of them.
I came to understand everyone is stupid
And I could never changed that.

My father took me to doctors in Maine
"His tongue is too big for his mouth. Slicing his palate with razors will force his tongue to work more."
My father rejected their cure.
"My son will live with a lisp."
Thereafter I spoke my own language
My mangled words belong to me alone.
And only to me.

1960
Our family moved from Falmouth Foresides
To the South Shore Of Boston
Catholic school.
I said nothing Hid my speech
The nuns rejected of my vow of silence.
Some severe nuns believed I spoke like Satan
My wrist slapped countlessly
For sloppy ths with a ruler.
Slaps for ghs too
Slap slap slap.
My classmates happy to be spared the rod.

Sister Mary Osmond understood my flaws.
She scheduled speech therapy.
None of their efforts helped
The school bullies more relentless than those in Maine
They beat my brother too.

Strangely my Latin
Perfect
At mass.
Mea culpa mea culpa mea maxima culpa The priests
sacerdos intellexit me
I dreamed of the Devil.
I sang Ruby Tuesday without fault
I believed in neither God or Satan.
I was a teenager
Destined to live forever young.
Through books.
Music
Life.

I learned how to hide my satanic speech in the 60s or 70s
From singers and poets hid
Safe from ths in so many words
Poem scented with ancient languages especially for us who saw spirits. strawberries tasted different flesh was smooth as shaved peaches and then you stood atop a pass or sailed into a city and everything became more it was not magic but only the being here more than now yet therefore exists in spoken words Ths stood in my way But not of poems. poems whose power has not been lost in the modern age even for a boy with a thick tongue.
