Death Song Thailand

Norman Mailer wrote his 1979 Pulitzer-winning EXECUTIONER’S SONG about Gary Gilmore’s 1977 execution by the State of Utah.

His crime. A 1976 murder spreed.

Method of death; shooting squad or noose.

He opted for the shooting squad rather than the noose.

Gilmore refused any reprieve from his fate.

"Death is the only inescapable, unavoidable, sure thing. We are sentenced to die the day we're born."

He walked the Last Mile on the morning of January 17, 1977.

His last meal from the Utah State Prison consisted of steak, potatoes, milk and coffee and a six-pack of beer. He ate nothing and drank the milk and coffee. Smuggled Jack Daniels was his last sustenance on Earth.

The Death House was an abandoned cannery. 5 riflemen from the local police served as the Death Squad.

His last words.

"Let's do it."

Gary Gilmore had remarked to Norman Mailer that he was different from most people, because he knew the exact moment of his death. Norman Mailer considered this insight extraordinary, yet didn’t extrapolate further to the fact that everyone was privy to the hour of Gary Gilmore’s date with destiny.

Especially the shooting squad.

Same as Chavoret Jaruboon, who had been Thailand’s primary executioner during the 20th Century.

Thailand’s method of capital punishment combined a ritual crucifixion with a single man shooting the victim in the back. Chavoret Jaruboon’s total is 55. Target. The heart. Only the shooter is aiming at a target behind a screen. 15 bullets are allotted for each occasion. Even the best get sloppy with a blind shot.

His 55 victims are 95 less than the 150 Texans killed by GW Bush’s stroke of a pen.

No one is shot in America anymore.

Americans rationalize that death by injection is a more merciful method of execution. Personally I’d choose a hot shot of heroin over a chemical concoction of dubious origins.

The majority of US Citizens consider the death penalty as an effective weapon against murder. The FBI reports that each execution deters at least 3-17 extra victims.

Guess they aren’t taking into account Columbine or Virginia Tech, where the killers don’t make it to court.

China kills thousands of criminals each year. There is no appeal. A bullet to the head and the family has to pay for the bullet.

In 1995 I witnessed a parade of trucks in Chengdu transporting about 30 victims to the sports stadium. The resignation on their faces betrayed none expected a last minute reprieve.

Neither did any of GW Bush’s 150.

China even has a mobile execution van. Death is by injection. Comfortable sitting for six witnesses. No body damage for better organ harvesting. Due to international pressure prior to the 2008 Beijing Olympics the Chinese have cut their executions from 12,000 a year to about 7500 per annum.

Still more than all the other countries in the world combined.

Each and every of the condemned 'Guilty if Charged'.
Thailand tries to do its part to reduce the criminal population.

A bullet is better than previous methods.

Until 1934 Thailand decapitated criminals. A swordsman would leap from behind the victim and lop off their head. This ambush was to designed to prevent the dead man’s ghost from haunting the killer. The head was then stuck on a pole and the bodies fed to birds of prey ie vultures. This was an improvement on earlier techniques such as inserting a red-hot iron in the brain or immolating a bound and impaled prisoner.

Unlike Gary Gilmore, none of the prisoners on Thailand’s Death Row are told the time of their death. Guards show up one morning and select a victim. Surprise. No last meal. No phone calls. Just, “Mung, bpai.”

Most are dragged kicking and screaming to their doom according to Mr. Chavoret, who was promoted to Warden of the Foreign Prisoners’ Section at Bangkok’s Bang Kwang Central Prison. He still deems that capital punishment acts as a deterrent to crime, despite its prohibition by Buddhist teachings.

“An eye for an eye.” He quoted the old Hebrew standard of retribution.

Of course no one speaks about the 3000-plus killings during Thaksin’s War of Drugs.

There too were guilty if charged.

There is no innocence for them.

I'm A Hypocrite

A reader sent a comment on my entry DEATH SONG THAILAND

He found umbrage with my comment that 'The majority of US Citizens consider the death penalty as an effective weapon against murder.'

PROUD AMERICAN said...

I don't know where you got your information on most Americans think the death penalty is a effective deterrent to crime, most Americans see the death penalty as payment for the crime committed. If someone has had a husband, wife, mother, father, brother, sister, son, daughter or other loved one brutally murdered and they are against the death penalty I respect that. Never happened?

99% against it have never experienced that for some reason. Hmmm. Imagine that. What you need to do is get a law passed where you can sign a waiver saying that in the event any of your family members[children included] were to be brutally murdered you the survivor does not want the death penalty carried out. THEN I MIGHT RESPECT YOU. You wont even attempt it because your all hypocrites. As long as it's someone else's child or family member your against it.

My reply

Proud american.

My best friend was murdered in 2002. A handyman was convicted of the crime. He was sentenced to life. Personally I would have shot him dead without any qualms of guilt. Most Americans are lucky enough to not have family members or friends killed, but a great number do and usually by people they know ie friends and family.

I don't know you got the idea that I'm not in favor of the ultimate retribution.

Just not in favor of having some dumb ass in charge like GW Bush, who doesn't have the time to read a last-minute plea in charge of the process.

Lastly I don't need your respect.

But thanks for the comment.

Good to see the blood boils in us.

So tired of people with no opinion other than 'uh?'

I'm A Poseur too

Last month I re-wrote a story about the Damned's show at Hurrah in 1978. I thought that the Dead Boys from Cleveland were touring with the British group. Cheetah Chrome emailed a comment excoriating my time-misplacement.

What an honor.

Here is his email.

SONIC REDUCER rocks.

The Damned Live 1978

Cheetah

Nice story , too bad it never happened. Do yer research man.The only gigs we ever did with the Damned in the US were at CBGB.The only tour we ever did with them was in England. Documented fact. Christ, you lame-ass posers…..

My replies

Mr. Chrome, I will change the facts about the gig. I was there and recall passing out in the underneath baggage compartment of the Damned's tour bus. Don’t worry you were my favorite band from Cleveland. Sonic reducer will forever rock. Plus this is semi-fiction. And I don’t give a shit for nothing other than seeing you guys live. My memory has been savaged by time. Once I was in a taxi coming down down 7th Avenue from Hurrah. Probably 2 in the morning. With a few high school girls from the upper west side. There was a traffic jam around MSG. Didn’t make sense until I spotted you bare-chested in the avenue facing the traffic. The girls asked who was that.

“A dead boy.”

And that’s the truth.

Thanks for the comment, Mr. Chrome.

ps I saw the Dead Boys every chance I had in the late-70s.

They were better than great. They were most excellent.

Free As The Breeze

The Soviet Premier Khrushchev famously declared in 1956 that the USSR would bury American Imperialism. "We will bury you!"

Actually he said, "Whether you like it or not, history is on our side. We will dig you in."

The Western press 'we will bury you' better.

President Kennedy came into office confronted by an aggressive Soviet Union. the Russians thought that we were soft and JFK called the American people to improve their health and fitness to counter the USSR. The primary challenge was the 50-mile hike. The Marines could do it in 20 hours. In February 1963 JFK and his brother accomplished the feat in winter weather.

That summer at Boy Scout camp in New Hampshire my older brother and I joined a troop of hikers to double the distance. 100 miles through the woods and over the hills. Our scout leaders drove the phalanx of 12-13 year-olds in 35-mile stages every day. 10-12 hours solid walking. We ran out of food on the second day and pillage a cornfield for dinner. The 3rd day was a tortuous trudge surrounded by burnt forests and miles of chopped tress. The sun was relentless and the leaders promised us a good meal at the end of the trail.

Big Man Pond.

Food and water.

The first word from the right foot. The second foot for water. We built a mirage of Big Man Pond. 30 miles across from shore to shore. Crystal clear water. Hot dogs and hamburgers on a BBQ. Cokes and ice cream.

The reality came as a shock.

Big Man Pond was barely 300 feet in length. One of the boys from South Boston threw a rock across it. The troop leader yelled at us. "This is as good as it gets. That's water. The food will be here later. We've marched 100 miles in 3 days. It's time for a swim. You've earned it. Everyone strip off your clothes."

He led the way and was buck-naked with seconds. We joined him without protest.

"Everyone in formation. Now one quick jog around the pond and then in the water."

We followed the troop leader. Our penises bouncing up and down. At the starting point he stopped and pointed to the pond.

"Into the water."

We were robots to his command.

It was the first time that I ever went skinny-dipping, but not the last.

I've swam naked on Cape Cod, at Watchic Pond, Riis Park in New York, and Black Beach in San Duego.

Nudity is frowned upon by most Americans. Our Puritan roots deny the freedom of prurient behavior. Muslims are not fond of bare flesh and neither is Latin America. A body without clothing is too vulnerable to attack, however the Germans and Scandinavians have a long history of sun-worshipping due to their pagan history.

In 1982 I visited Sylt north of Hamburg. The beach is a center for FKK or Freikoerperkultur 'free body culture'. I stripped off my clothes and allowed the four elements of the wind, earth, sun, and water scoured my flesh. The other bathers bronzed their bodies like gods and goddesses. My friends and I were young. That day wwe felt immortal.

30 years later sunbathing au natural has fallen out of vogue according to the German FKK association. There are less Germans and more foreigners, who disapprove of the old tradition, plus the Germans of the 80s are in their 50s and 60s.

Our divinity has been devastated by the decades. I no longer look at my reflection in the mirror. I prefer looking at my shadow, but I quit my job last week for several reasons and one is to regain my girlish figure. The past three days I've been out on the basketball court in near-90 degree heat shooting hoops. I walked around my apartment in the nude. One day and one day soon I'm going to check the mirror and see the shadow of that young man basking in the dying light of a North Sea sunset and say, "Naked as a jaybird."

The same way I came into this life.

Sylt, I'm coming your way.

Achtung, achtung.

The naked man cometh.

Nobody is burying me.

The Freedom To Feast

The Constitution's 1st Amendment guaranteed Americans the Freedom of Speech. Cellphones have liberated the country and people speak their minds in their cars, bathrooms, restaurants, bars, work, trains, parks, beaches ad infinitum. Most of what they say is nonsense and these inane conversation are stored by the NSA in a secret building nicknamed The Tower of Blather.

We are free to speak our minds as long as our statements are in line with the general consensus of non-thinking. Liberals, moderates, and conservatives follow the party lines without breaking step. No one is capable of an original thought or choice and that calcification of opinion has imprisoned each political group into a schism of eating habits according to a new study.

The GOP love Fast Food.

Liberals adore real French Fries.

The religious right say prayers at McDonald's, while atheists seek out organic fare.

Diet soda versus fruit.

Milk at home versus wine.

Food that easy to pronounce versus foreign cuisine.

Neither are thin, since they eat ice cream.

Fat fat fat.

It's the last freedom left for Americans.

The freedom to feast.

And never fast.

Burning Rubber

"In the beginning..." are the first three words in Genesis. The words in modern times have been hijacked for a Byrds LP, a Genesis album, an episode of the sci-fi TV show BABYLON 5, and songs by the Moody Blues and Mötley Crüe.
The Old Testament opening continues to say, "God created the heavens and earth."

The Big Bang theory as written by St. John and religions have been arguing about creation ever since the beginning. I've conjectured that light is eternal, therefore there was no creation, however the ex-model from Paris accepts the Bible version as truth.

My father was more pragmatic. He would see a baby and say, "Can you imagine that creature came from a single cell. Amazing."

My father was pro-life. He loved his children. Contraception has beyond his ken. Our talk about the Birds and Bees was bereft any mention of condoms. Teens in the 60s had a source about sexual information independent of family, school, and church. Porno instructed the boys on every facet of human desire.

We joked about wearing a rubber was like taking a shower with a raincoat.

Boys could laugh at that, because they didn't get pregnant.

Girls were not so lucky and the Church fought any legislation to legalize contraception, while the religious right rejected any reform on sex education. These powers advised young and old alike, "Abstinence."

Few people heeded their course of inaction. Teenage pregnancies soared, despite federally-financed sex resistance courses. STDs spread through the country. No politician braved the controversy for the side of reason. Sperm was the spark of life and the womb is fireplace.

This week a group of health experts suggested that a wide range of contraception devices be added to the programs offered by HMOs. They were responding to the new law passed by the Obama administration that women receive these benefits without any charge. The religious right were quick to criticize the plan for forcing birth control down the throats of conservative Americans.

To the Bible Belt contraception is abortion, despite nearly 100% of American women of all religious beliefs having used some kind of birth control.

Men telling women what to do.

Before the beginning there was light and that light shone on the truth.

In the words of the immortal Earl Butz to the Pope on contraception, "If you donna playah the game, you donna makah the rules."

Right on.

Pattaya Bar Rules For Bar Girls

The source for these rules are Anonymous, but so very very true.

1. Choose your farang depending to your needs. If you have money in your pocket, you can be picky, although that’s not very likely since you would be home sleeping, eating, or watching TV if your wallet was crammed with 100 baht notes. You wouldn’t be working if you did. At the end of the week, specifically Friday and Saturday, many locally employed walking ATM machines will come to your bar, choose carefully! Some have money, but others do not! If he is wearing a suit and tie, check that the tie is not a Pratunam special and check that he isn’t wearing trainers. If he is, forget him because he is most likely an English teacher, and they will only give you peanuts, if they give you anything at all

2. No matter how fat and ugly he is, no matter how bad he may smell, no matter how drunk he is, make sure you always tell him he is handsome. Sit close to him and run your hands over his body, arousing him. As soon as he has paid the bar fine, you can stand clear of him. Even if he knows that you despise him, he’ll still pay you. The hard part is getting him to pay the bar, and as soon as he has done that, the rest is easy.

3. Start collecting email addresses from all of your customers, once you have a good collection of addresses, a visit to your local Internet cafe is in order. Send everyone an email. Simply change the name on each email and send it off to all the guys. If you can remember something specific about them, mention that in the email too. These walking ATMs all have a soft heart, so you need to tell them a story to get them to send you some of their riches. Start with a sick buffalo and if he doesn’t reply, next tell him that your mother is ill. As a last resort, if he still doesn’t send any money, tell him you are pregnant and the baby is his!

4. Practice crying on cue. It is essential that you can produce tears immediately. This will have the effect of helping the walking ATM machine to see things your way!

5. When you get a customer for an extended period of time, make sure he takes you shopping, with Rarn Tong (gold shop) being the best place to visit. Make sure he buys you gold and if he doesn’t, see rule 4! As soon as he has left Thailand, take the gold back to the shop and sell it straight back to them, thus increasing your pay out.

6. When locally based farangs are inside the bars, do not speak in Thai with your friends in the bar but rather use Lao, Khmer or any other dialects that you may know.
It’s bad enough that some of them can speak and even read Thai, but Lao and Khmer should be kept as sacrosanct. Under no circumstances should the farang be taught our regional dialects.

7. Always see him off at the airport. Thai currency cannot be used in his country, so it is highly likely that he will give you all of his leftover Baht as he leaves and says goodbye. While accompanying him to the airport, prevent him buying going-away gifts for his family and friends in his homeland, this will leave more money for you.

8. See Asian customers. They understand that we like to gamble, and they understand that we have lots of unemployed brothers and sisters who need to eat. Therefore, they pay a lot better than the farangs.

9. Remember, when you go with a farang, you must always ask for taxi money and give him the excuse that taxi drivers cannot give change on big notes. Don’t let him see the small change in your wallet. If taxi money isn’t forthcoming, see rule 4.

10. If you are no longer making money in Bangkok, move down to Phuket where you will be able to start making money again. Give Phuket a few years, then move on to Pattaya. Even if you are approaching 50, it is no problem as the walking ATM machines in Pattaya seem to be so blind, they will not notice.
