January 6, 2021 Donald Trump on the Mall exhorted a large crowd of supporters protesting the previous year's 'Stolen election' to march on the Capitol, where the Congress certefying the vote for Joe Biden as the 46th President of the USA.

"If you don't fight like hell, you're not going to have a country anymore." Trump declared from the podium of the STOP THE STEAL crowd of several tens of thousands disgruntled white males and some females. Their MAGA messiah had been denied a second term. It didn't matter that he lost by millions of votes as well as in the Election College. They were enraged by firebrands like Alex Jones, who claimed that the White House asked him to lead the march to the Capitol according to Wikipedia. In the weeks before 1/6 the leaders of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers had preached to their minions that the only way to save America was to storm the Capitol Building. Trump had ordered the newly appointed Secretary of Defense to protect the MAGA crowd and no troops were on hand for the attempted coup d'etat.

The riot cost five lives; a female rioter one was shot by the Capitol Police, another died of a drug overdose, and three died of natural causes, including a police officer who died of a stroke a day after being assaulted by rioters and collapsing at the Capitol.Many people were injured, including 174 police officers. The new White House went after the guilty. Hundreds were sentenced to prison and Trump narrowly avoided prosecution for his part in the uprising. he Senate voted 57–43 in favor of conviction. A conviction mneeded three more votes. In 2016 Trump annoounced to a crowd in Iowa, "I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn't lose any voters, OK?."
