THE MEANING OF PURE by Peter Nolan Smith

This is a video of my story THE MEANING OF PURE.

In 1995 I crosse the Himalayas and traveled to Benares.

Swimming in the Ganges washed away your sins.

My bath in the Mother of India was dedicated to my baby brother who had passed from AIDS earlier in the summer.

Michael Charles Smith comes to me in dreams.

He seems happy in the Here-After.

Eric Marciano made this video and I thank the Springfield native for his insight.

Burn Bible Burn 2011

The sun never set on the British Empire in the 19th Century. Queen Victoria was its supreme leader. Britannia ruled the waves and her army brought order to the savage lands of Africa and Asia. The native were expected to reward their Christina overlords with natural resources and human labor. India was the crown jewel of the empire, although the subcontinent was in truth ruled by the East India Company. Its agents exacted taxes and revenue behind the bayonets of 40,000 redcoats and 200,000 sepoy soldiers.

In 1856 the Governor-General was not satisfied with the native levees' contribution to the Empire and decided that the Indian soldiers were bound by their honor to serve at overseas post such as Burma or China. This order broke caste for many sepoys and the policies of slow promotions and Christian preaching in the ranks created great dissent in the encampments. Lord Dalhousie and his officers addressed the complaints with an iron fist. Their contempt for the sepoys blinded them to the serious of rumors about the cartridges of the Enfield rifles being greased with cow or pig fat, the Hindus considered the cow sacred and the Muslims regarded pig as haram. The British officers couldn't have given a fig for these religious restraints.

On February 26,1857 the 19th Bengal Native Infantry refused an order to load the new Enfields. A month later Mangal Pandey of the 34th BNI attacked his commanding officer. Other troops refused to arrest the offender. He was hung for mutiny along with the regiment's Jemadar. The sepoys broke into open rebellion in April. Within a week northern India was in flames and the British were besieged by hordes angered by religious outrages.

The British Raj triumphed thanks to the gallantry of their soldiers, Sikh compatriots, and Afghan raiders from beyond the Frontier. Captured mutineers were subjected to the Mughal punishment of being blown from a cannon. Lord Dalhousie had departed from India in March. Queen Victoria awarded him a pension and the instigator of the Sepoy Rebellion died peacefully in his own bed.

Christians have a tendency to ignore the beliefs of other religions. Most think that only Jesus believers end up in heaven and after 9/11 disdain for Muslims has been an national obsession for Americans. Our nation is fighting two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Both have been winding down under the leadership of Barack Obama. The 'surges', bribery payments, assassination squads, and drone attacks have weakened the leadership of the Taliban, but Afghanistan has been a death trap for armies; the Birish in the 19th Century and the Russians in the late-20th Century.

"I am ready to sacrifice everything in completing the unfinished agenda of our noble jihad... until there is no bloodshed in Afghanistan and Islam becomes a way of life for our people." Mohammed Omar is committed to the struggle and last month his fight gained steam thanks to the burning on two-hundred Korans by a Florida backwater Bible preacher.

The Dove Outreach Center declared the Koran guilty of crime against humanity and their gun-carrying evangelistic leader set fire to the kerosene-soaked Korans.

"They actually burned quite well.”

Mr. Jones' work was appreciated by his fifty member congregation and the preacher posted a video of the bonfire on Youtubes. Only 1300 people viewed the tape, but the internet has shrunk the world and yesterday Afghanis revenged the blasphemy by storming a UN compound in the Mazar-i-Sharif and killing 12 foreigners, mostly Nepali soldiers.

“We don’t feel responsible for that.” Mr. Jones was quick to point out to Agence France-Presse.

It is not illegal in the USA to burn the Koran. It is also not illegal to burn the Bible. I always throw the ones that I find in hotel rooms into a field. It's not theft. The Gideon Organization provides them to each hotel room in America. Even in the Mustang brothels in Nevada and nothing burns better than a Bible from a whorehouse.

Only one way to find out.

GUNGA DIN by Rudyard Kipling

When I was a young boy, I loved the movie GUNGA DIN.

The hero was an outcast water-boy.

The lowest of the low in the ranks of the British Empire, but Rudyard Kipling recognized their worth to a man dying of thirst and wrote the following poem.

GUNGA DIN

BY RUDYARD KIPLING

You may talk o' gin and beer When you're quartered safe out 'ere, An’ you're sent to penny-fights an' Aldershot it; But when it comes to slaughter You will do your work on water, An' you'll lick the bloomin' boots of 'im that's got it. Now in Injia's sunny clime, Where I used to spend my time Aservin' of 'Er Majesty the Queen, Of all them black-faced crew The finest man I knew Was our regimental bhisti, Gunga Din, He was "Din! Din! Din!" "You limpin' lump o' brick-dust, Gunga Din!" "Hi! Slippy hitherao." "Water, get it! Panee lao." "You squidgy-nosed old idol, Gunga Din."

The uniform 'e wore Was nothin' much before, An' rather less than 'arf o' that be'ind, For a piece o' twisty rag An' a goatskin water-bag Was all the field-equipment 'e could find. When the sweatin' troop-train lay In a sidin' through the day, Where the 'eat would make your bloomin' eyebrows crawl, We shouted "Harry By!" Till our throats were bricky-dry, Then we wopped 'im cause 'e couldn't serve us all. It was "Din! Din! Din!" You 'eathen, where the mischief 'ave you been? "You put some juldee in it Or I'll marrow you this minute "If you don't fill up my helmet, Gunga Din!"

"E would dot an' carry one Till the longest day was done; An' 'e didn't seem to know the use o' fear. If we charged or broke or cut, You could bet your bloomin' nut, 'E'd be waitin' fifty paces right flank rear. With 'is mussick on 'is back, 'E would skip with our attack, An' watch us till the bugles made 'Retire,' An' for all 'is dirty 'ide 'E was white, clear white, inside When 'e went to tend the wounded under fire! It was "Din! Din! Din!" With the bullets kickin' dust-spots on the green. When the cartridges ran out, You could hear the front-ranks shout, "Hi! ammunition-mules an' Gunga Din!"

I shan't forgit the night When I dropped be'ind the fight With a bullet where my belt-plate should 'a' been. I was chokin' mad with thirst, An' the man that spied me first Was our good old grinnin', gruntin' Gunga Din. 'E lifted up my 'ead, An' he plugged me where I bled, An' 'e guv me 'arf-a-pint o' water green. It was crawlin' and it stunk, But of all the drinks I've drunk, I'm gratefullest to one from Gunga Din. It was "Din! Din! Din!" "'Ere's a beggar with a bullet through 'is spleen; "'E's chawin' up the ground, 'An' 'e's kickin' all around: 'For Gawd's sake git the water, Gunga Din!'

'E carried me away To where a dooli lay, An' a bullet come an' drilled the beggar clean. ’E put me safe inside, An' just before 'e died, "I 'ope you liked your drink," sez Gunga Din. So I'll meet 'im later on At the place where 'e is gone.” Where it's always double drill and no canteen. 'E'll be squattin' on the coals Givin' drink to poor damned souls, An' I'll get a swig in hell from Gunga Din! Yes, Din! Din! Din! You Lazarushian-leather Gunga Din! Though I've belted you and flayed you, By the livin' Gawd that made you, You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din!

Kill For The Sake Of Cali

GUNGA DIN was one of my favorite movies as a child. The cinematic version of Rudyard Kipling's poem about an untouchable bisthi or water carrier had elephants, fakirs, religious fanatics, comedy, thrills, and the horror of the Thuggees, who killed the innocent for their multi-armed goddess, Cali. "Swear by our mother Kali to be thrice faithful to her and to me and to our order and to all of us. Rise, our new-made brothers. Rise and kill. Kill, lest you be killed yourselves. Kill for the love of killing. Kill for the love of Kali! Kill! Kill! Kill!"

I always found this murderous request chilling, but mankind hasn't changed a lick since the release of 1939 GUNGA DIN.

The Taliban murdered over a hundred schoolchildren in Pakistan, a Louisiana mother killed her babies, Israel's IDF slaughtered hundreds of Gazans during the summer, a madman shot two cops in NY, the cops killed more, and it keeps on going on and on and on without cessation.

The horror.

As Joseph Conrad wrote in THE HEART OF DARKNESS.

"The horror."

Marlon Brando rumbled the words in APOCALYPSE NOW.

All I want is a little peace.

Is that too much to ask from the world.

One day.

And here's the end of GUNGA DIN.

The water boy has been shot and is dying.

A sergeant speaks over his body.

So I'll meet 'im later on At the place where 'e is gone -- Where it's always double drill and no canteen; 'E'll be squattin' on the coals Givin' drink to poor damned souls, An' I'll get a swig in hell from Gunga Din! Yes, Din! Din! Din! You Lazarushian-leather Gunga Din! Though I've belted you and flayed you, By the livin' Gawd that made you, You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din

THE MEANING OF PURE by Peter Nolan Smith

In the summer of 1995 my baby brother died of AIDS.

Our family buried his body in a grave south of Boston.

After the funeral I left the USA and sought solace for Michael's soul at the holy sites of Asia.

I lit candles before the Buddha in Chiang Mai.

I circumnavigated Lhasa's Jokhang Temple.

Despite a lifelong disbelief in religion this pilgrimage comforted my sense of loss.

In November I crossed the Himalayas and flew south from Kathmandu to Varanasi on the Ganges.

In the ancient city I booked a hotel room up the river from the burning ghats. Backpackers smoked ganga on the terrace. A sitarist at a nearby ashram played a raja in the starry evening.

In the steepening dusk I wandered to the smoldering crematory pyres.

Untouchables gathered bones and dumped charred remains into the Mother of India.

My brother had been buried in a grave outside of Boston.

Here life ended in ashes not dust to dust.

The monsoon season was over and the faithful washed away their sins in the Ganges.

In the morning I ate a khichri of rice, lentils, and spices. The tea was sweet. The water came from the river river.

To avoid the morning heat I read Hindu phrases from a travel guide.

Afterwards I returned to the ghats.

Scores of mourners stacked wood for the fiery funerals of their beloved ones.

There was little weeping.

The walk by the river had muddied my feet.

I went to the water's edge and washed my sandals.

The ghat fell silent.

"Mistah." A young girl in a blue sari stood before me. "You have done a bad thing. The Ganges is sacred and washing your shoes is 'varjita'."

I read the meaning of 'varjita' in the circle of accusing eyes.

A hostile murmur replaced the stillness.

The mourners were on the verge of becoming a mob.

"Kheda." My earnest apology did not penetrate the anger.

"You have to leave." The young girl shouted to a passing boatman. "My uncle will take you to safety."

"Dhan'yav'da." I hopped in the rowboat and the man pulled on the oars.

His name was Ramsi.

"You are a very silly man." Ramsi rowed to the middle of the Ganges. My disgrace had been swallowed by the convergence of several funeral processions.

"Yes, I am very silly," I explained how I had come to Varansi to purify my body.

"It is the best place in the world to cleanse your sins, but not your shoes, sir." Ramsi motioned to a broad sand bar. "The water on the opposite shore is cleaner and private. You want to go there?"

"How much?"

"Pay what you think is right, sir."

"Accha." I was okay with this deal, since he had saved me from possible harm on the ghats.

I took off my clothes and swam naked into the Ganges.

The water was fine and I got out to dry myself.

Two hundred feet upriver vulture was fighting a dog for something lying half in the eddies.

It was a dead body.

Ramsi came up to me.

"The poor don't have enough money to burn the body. They give the body to the river. A river dolphin is joining them. He will help the dead man's spirit to nirvana."

A dolphin joined the two combatant in the menage-a-trois feast.

Back at the ghats I gave Ramsi $20.

"Oh, sir, you are too good. Tonight come to my house for dinner."

There was no saying no.

Back at the hotel travelers discussed the westerner who had washed his sandals at the ghat.

I didn't give them my version of the scandal.

That evening I met Ramsi and accompanied the boatman to his one-room house. His wife was dressed in her finery. The meal was vegetarian and the water was fresh from the Ganges.

"It is holy water. I have drank it all my life and have never been sick once."

"Saubh'gya." Good luck was always good luck no matter if offered by a sinner.

I drank it and felt pure.

I hoped that my brother Michael felt the same.

Our sacred river was the Saco in Maine.

Only last summer its waters had washed over Michael and me.

It had been pure too.

And that night on the Ganges I went to sleep content.

Somewhere in the Here-Before my brother was pure.

In some ways I was too.

On the Trail Of The Leopard

Prior to the New Year my English friend Sara and her two daughters flew out to India to tour the subcontinent from the Himals to Goa. They landed in Delhi, traveled out to the Taj Mahal and the ghats of the Ganges before flying west to Rajahistan, the exotic desert province bordering the expansive and wild Thar Desert.

The guides organized a safari into the wastelands to sight a savage leopard.

The male of endangered big cats are over four feet long and weigh up to 170 pounds.

The predators feast on farm animals and compete with larger cats such as tigers and lions for hunting rights. Attacks on humans are rare and poachers have whittled the numbers of leopards down to 11,000. Villagers recognize the beauty of the leopards and usually allow the big cats to escape back into the forests rather than kill them.

"We didn't see any leopards," reported Sara back from her trip. "All we saw was dust."

"There's a lot of dust in the Thar."

"And not many leopards."

"And they didn't see you."

"A good thing for both of us. I don't think I would make good eating."

"Me neither."

"I'm not so sure about that." Sara poked my gut.

"Well, better eating than you."

"I don't know. We women are made of sugar and spice and you men consist of snails and puppy dog tails."

"You're right about that."

"Nice and chewy."

Sara was old school. She liked cats. Big and small.

Love live the leopard.

2016 OBAMA'S AMERICA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09i2YvLPZuE

2016 OBAMA'S AMERICA an anti-Obama documentary based on Dinesh D’Souza’s book “The Roots of Obama’s Rage” hit the theater last weekend and outgrossed EXPENDABLES 2 thanks to a push from an heavily evangelical audience outraged by the loss of God in their America. The Chicago Sun Times called the film 'amateurish' and 'hokey', while the LA Times deemed the movie's examination of Obama's anti-imperialism 'heavy-handed'. AP was less critical of D’Souza's film, claiming the documentary to be the highest-grossing right-wing documentary of all time. I stood in front of an East Village theater showing the movie. I didn't see one person buy a ticket, but that gentrified neighborhood is hardly a bastion of conservative thought.

2016 OBAMA'S AMERICA subscribes to the Dinesh D’Souza's belief that Obama idolized his natural father who was nothing more than a drunk who beat his four wives and who died in poverty as a result of his alcoholism, after which D'Souza furthered his belief that Obama's anti-colonialist views of the British Empire transformed the young boy into a let-wing radical under the aegis of Weatherman Bill Ayers, who Obama met in the 90s. My cousin Ty Spaulding went to school with Barack in Hawaii. The film ends with the apocalyptical line, "The future is in your hands."

I doubt that I will see this movie, since I don't go to the cinema that often, so I can't really say much about 2016 OBAMA'S AMERICA other than the Goan-born GOP flack is preaching to the other choir.

This weekend Bill Maher lambasted Dinesh D’Souza on POLITICALLY INCORRECT.
