Shots In Anger

At 4:30am on Friday, April 12, 1861 Brigadier General Beauregard ordered the secessionist troops manning the artillery batteries of Charleston, South Carolina to open fire on Fort Sumter housing 127 federal troops of which 13 were musicians. Two hours lapse before the Yankee commander allowed Captain Abner Doubleday, the inventor of baseball, to return a salvo of solid ball. No rebel or union soldiers died during the 34 hours of bombardment, although one rebel was mortally wounded after the misfiring of a cannon and two union troops gave up their lives on the 47th shot of a 100-shot salute after the surrender of the beleaguered fort.

The nearly-bloodless fight ill-prepared the divided nation for the four years of slaughter to come. I asked everyone at work of today's importance. None of the employees at the diamond exchange had an answer. A good percentage of them are foreign-born. None of the native-born were aware of the date's significance. The New York Times, the Daily News, and New York Post wrote articles about the battle, but 2 weeks ago is ancient history in the city that never sleeps.

My father's side of the family fought in the Civil War. Hannibal Hamlin, distant relative, had been vice president under Lincoln. The first time I googled his name the first article to appear said that the Maine politician was reputed to be a negro, but then most white people at that time had negro blood in their veins after 200 years of slavery. They even paid painters to change their pigmentation in portraits to heighten their whiteness, but then the War Between the States was not about freeing the slaves, the casus bellum was 'states rights' according the the southerners of today and certainly more folks south of the Mason-Dixon Line recall the events of today than in the North.

To the victors go the glory of ignorance.

But in the Great State of Maine granite statues dot town squares. Immortal soldiers from the 10th Maine regiment, the 27th Maine, and Joshua Chamberlain's heroic 20th Maine face in one direction and that direction is South. My family hailed from Westbrook, Maine. The attic of my grandmother's house was a memorial to past wars. As a boy my older brother and I wore the uniforms of WWI and WWII. In my mind I remembered pulling on a blue coat of a Yankee. It was small. Almost the size of a young boy like myself. I telephoned my aunt to ask her, if she recollected a uniform dating back to the Civil War.

"You have such a special memory," she laughed from her living room in Marblehead. Her husband agreed with her recollection, but men at any age agree with a woman if they know what's good for them.

My older brother was my next call. His memory mirrored that of our aunt.

"What about seeing the last Union soldiers at a town parade on Memorial Day? About 1960?"

"Not a chance. The last surviving veteran was Albert Henry Woolson. He died in 1956."

"How do you know that?"

"Because my son told me that today."

His son was smart. He was graduating from U Penn. His field of studies was pre-med.

"And he also asked me to name the 9 battles in which over 20,000 troops died in the Civil War."

"That's easy; the 2nd Battle of Bull Run, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, Gettysburg, Fredricksburg, Shiloh, Antietam, Stone River, Spotsylvania, and Chickamauga." I had read Bruce Catton's Civil War histories several times as a youth and adult.

I was right, although his wife thought that I read these names from a computer. She was wrong. The Civil War is in my blood.

In 2011 I drove south of the Potomac to visit Ms. Carolina. She was seriously ill. I wanted to see her before the turns of her travails worsened with the shortening of time. Her house was out on the Northern Neck of the Potomac. I headed down I-95 to route 3 and turned east. Fredricksburg was en route. I was drawn to St. Marye's Heights. The Union Army had been broken on this ground. The 20th Maine had huddled behind the dead. Spring was another few weeks away, but I stood next to the old cannons and mourned the dead.

Theirs and ours.

150 years is a long time. We are still enemies, yet still the same for the Union survived those four dreadful years and this country will be challenged by the present division sundering our connections, for at the end we are all Americans and nobody says it better than Maine's Joshua Chamberlain, who was present during the Surrender at Appomattox. He met with General Gordon of the CSA.

"I am from General Gordon. General Lee desires a cessation of hostilities until he can hear from General Grant as to the proposed surrender."

Chamberlain recounted the ceremony in his memoir and the moment when he ordered the 20th Maine to "carry arms" as a show of respect.

"Gordon, at the head of the marching column, outdoes us in courtesy. He was riding with downcast eyes and more than pensive look; but at this clatter of arms he raises his eyes and instantly catching the significance, wheels his horse with that superb grace of which he is master, drops the point of his sword to his stirrup, gives a command, at which the great Confederate ensign following him is dipped and his decimated brigades, as they reach our right, respond to the 'carry.' All the while on our part not a sound of trumpet or drum, not a cheer, nor a word nor motion of man, but awful stillness as if it were the passing of the dead."

Johnny, it's always good to put that gun down.

We are one nation.

150 years ago as much as today.

No Silent Night - Bethelem 2023

Yesterday the IDF pounded Gaza with bombs and artillery, killing scores of civilians and wounding hundreds. Their national holocaust soul demands retribution for Hamas' October 7 attack and their revenge has not be an eye for an eye. Not on Yom Kippur. Not on Hanukkah. Not on Christmas. Extermination of the Palestinian has been the only goal for Israel. Hamas, men, women, children. They have forced their fellow Semites to the edge of the Negev to march everyone into the desert as the Turks visited on the Armenians. From the river to the sea, Israel will be free of anyone, but Jews. Many of my Jewish friends see this as the only course. Extermination once and all. Americans remain silent on the subject. The Press only see one-side. Zionism supreme. Silence is the truth. But not for me. And not for others. We believe in peace, but not at the price demanded by Netanyahu and his fascist ministers.

No Christmas too.

11-11-1918

Published on Nov 11, 2012 My grandfather and grandmother met in France. The year was 1917. They served together in a frontline hospital for the Royal Canadian Medical Expedition. They came home with German helmets, bayonets, zeppelin debris, and medals as souvenirs of that horrible conflict. Neither had much use for God after witnessing the carnage of trench warfare.

Today I toasted them both and thanked the stars that I’ve never had to fire a shot in anger and thanked the fallen for their sacrifice so that I remain a pacifist.

Almost a hundred years ago they were sitting along the Marne for the Armstice.

The truce between the Axis and Allies was signed at 5am, but ceasefire didn't take effect, until the 11th second of the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

The guns along the Western Front unloosed their last cannonade for six hours.

The 11th second came and went without any abatement in the fury. Soldiers on both sides had ammo and they weren't taking it home from 'over there'.

It is estimated that over 10,000 men were killed or wounded between 5am and 11am.

The last casualty is reputed to be a Canadian, Private George Lawrence Price.

He was struck in the chest by a German sniper at 10:58am.

One of the 60,000 dead from the Great North.

Pacem in Terrem.

I asked a number of New Yorker about Armstice Day. It's a national holiday. Out of the twenty I questioned only two could say why they had a day off from work.

"As you get old, you forget. As you get older you are forgotten."

But not by me.

I'm a true old git.

Oct. 7 2024 - A Year Later

1900

Palestine was a province of the Ottoman Empire. The Arab armies liberated the Middle East with the British Army, but the provinces were divided by two English Arab experts. Straight lines drawn in the deserts. Peace ruled the lands, but the West had plans for the Levant. Acrcording to a 1914-1915 census 1914 the population of Palestine was 602,377 Muslims, 38,754 Jews and 81,012 Christian.

1937 Nakba when the British defeated the Palestinians and then armed the Zionists to create a homeland for the Jewish people after the Holocaust. The partition wasn't in Germany, but the biblical kingdom of Judah which hadn't rxisted for almost two thousand years.

Death camp survivors and Jews of the Diaspora emigrated to Palestine with the hopes of a place of refuge. None wanted to remain in countries, which had executed the Final Solution such as Germany, Poland, and Austria. This safety came at the cost of the Palestinians; Muslims, Christians, Druze, Samaritans, and others, when the UN voted a partition granthing one-third of the population two-thirds of the land without a plebicite of the land's inhabitants.

Palestine shrunk with the loss of wars. 1948. 1956. 1967. 1972 and then the occupation. Israel a theoocracy ruling over an apartheid ghetto. People said those people were always fighting each other just like the Irish fought the rule of the British. We Irish always stand for a Free Palestine.

Ugly.

Throughout the occupation of Palestine the PLO Hamas and Hezbollah has countered US financing, F-16s, and IDF precision bombing and invasions and with armed attacks on Israeli targets, airline hijacking suicide bombing, and intifdas to no avail, then on October 7, 2023. Hamas broke through the border walls to attack the desert communities in the Negev. On that morning the IDF was asleep. Shin Bet supposedly knew nothing about the preparations for the break-out. Hamas fighters swarmed from Gaza. Nearly 1109 Isrealis died in the assault. Hostages taken by Hamas. Israeli accusations of rape and babies burned to death. The only POV that of Israel and world opinion sanctioned the complete destruction of Gaza, especially the US government.

From Al Jazeera Senator Tom Cotton: “Israel doesn’t need patronising lectures about civilian casualties. As far as I’m concerned, Israel can bounce the rubble in Gaza.”

Tens of thousands killed by ensuing revenge bombing and artillery barrages. Hundreds of thousands wounded by the IDF. Millions homeless. Nowhere to run or hide in a repeat of the Warsaw Ghetto extermination by the Nazis.

As for the deaths of non-combatants according to Al-Jazeera Former President Bill Clinton said: “Hamas makes sure that they’re shielded. They’ll force you to kill civilians if you want to defend yourself.” and

For months Netanyahu and the hardliners backed by the DNC and GOP refused to negotiate with Hamas or anyone.

Once more Al-Jazeera cited Former President Joe Biden: “I have no notion that the Palestinians are telling the truth about how many people are killed. I’m sure innocents have been killed, and it’s the price of waging a war.”

Israel sought blood and death backed by billions from the West. War consolidates the the Nazionist rule over Palestine and Judah. $95 billion to kill 100,000 or more with the wounded numbering 244,000. Over 10% of Gaza's pre-October 7 population. And there's more to come with no escape from the onslaught for civilians. Not to Azrael. Not to Egypt. NOt even to the sea. The people are trapped in a shattered land along with Hamas and the remaining hostages. No nations wants the Palestinians. None of the Arab countries. They like the Jews throughout the Diaspora and the Irish under the Crown are pariahs. The Nazionists want to marched them en masse into the Negrev Desert this winner. But that will not defeat Hams. Only take away the ocean in which they swim.

But there is one solution other than the Final Solution.

Peace.

Shalom

Salaam.

But not with Netanyahu in power, although 47, a Israeli puppet, has proposed a peace truce. Hostage exchanges. Release of prisoners. Armstice. Hamas amnesty with a vow to relinquish control over Gaza. The withdrawl of IDF forces. The return of UN humanitarian services, reconstruction et al. Hamas and no one asks why 10/7.

The date has no significance.

Why?

Ask who had to gain from 10/7?

Not Hamas. Not Israel. Not Iran. Not the USA. No one had an answer. Only one person stood to benefit.

Boris Putin.

Why?

On 24 February 2022 Russia's President Putin greenlighted Soviet forces to invade the Ukraine to protect Rodina from a NATO-backed Nazi regime. Four separate armies crossed the border at dawn. Defeat of Kiev appeared to be inevitable, escept the Ukraine fought back and stopped the Russians dead in their tracks. Putin refused to end the war, but things went from bad to worse. This was the modern world. Drones ruled the skies for both sides. Static strategies lead to horrific losses on both sides. Victory was not in sight. Public opinion weighed heavily against the invaders. Russia was the losing both on the ground and with his people, but the crafty KGB operative had a card to play.

"Intelligence.

About the security on the Gaza BOrder. Netanyahu had pulled off soliders to deal with the protests against his government's attempting to abolish the Supreme Court. Putin couldn't attack on this info, but let his closest arms supplier, Iran, know that the border was soft. The Islamic council had little use for this, but Putin convinced them to let Hamas know about opening. Iran told thier Hamas allies top brass and they decided to take actio, even knowing that the IDF was bound to exact more than a pound of flesh. Shin Bet saw nothing come, because Netanyahu knew of the planned attack and he realized that he could rally the publich behind a war of revenge. The rest is history.

Before 10/7 the War in Ukraine was the # 1 lead for the media. Now Israel Total War rules the headlines. October 11. Chaos. The Ukraine War invisible to the world.

Putin now attacks Ukraine with impunity, reaping the value of Eternal War.

But one day Peace in the world. Gaza, the Ukraine, and everywhere and I hope it's soon.

Call a truce now.

Bring home the hostages.

Stop the war.

Shalom salaam.

CRAZY MUSLIMS

Yesterday I called my 'niece' Andy to wish her Jewish Happy New Year. She had already left the diamond exchange for the day and explained that she was having a post-work drink at the Plaza Hotel bar. "I'm meeting my sister and her wife for Rosh Hashanah."

"Nice, I'm in Brooklyn, otherwise I'd come and meet you." The beautiful brunette and I were ex-workmates from the 90s. We once made out in my old apartment. Andy couldn't do anything more than kiss and I became her 'uncle'.

"Uncle Pete, maybe you can tell me, what's with all these bomb attacks? Are these Muslims all crazy?" I could hear other people in the background. None of them were in a panic. New York was safe from any threats at least for today.

"Andy, the bombs are attacks against America were in revenge of our bombings in the Middle East. That attack on the embassy in Benghazi was, because that film about Mohammad really pissed them off." I had seen the fourteen minute trailer. THE INNOCENCE OF MUSLIMS was clearly aimed at setting off Muslims.

"I hear jokes about Jews all the time and I don't go around wanting to burn down anything. My grandfather said that the best thing we could do would be to drop a hundred atomic bombs in the Middle East and get rid of the cockroaches."

"That's how the Nazis spoke about the Jews. It's stupid talk. Sorry, but I believed in the one land /one state solution and everyone living as one. It is an impossibility, but while I'm an atheist, I do believe in miracles."

"But why are they so crazy about an insult? I was watching on CNN_____"

"Andy, you can't believe what you see on TV, especially the news. CNN, NBC, CBS. None of them have reporters on the scene and good news takes time to report. Their producers look at the images and then try and figure out what to say what opinion people want to hear." I imagined Andy holding an elegant glass of wine in her delicate hand with men at other tables admiring her eternal beauty.

"You mean CNN doesn't tell the truth?" Andy sounded like I had stolen Santa Claus from Hannukah.

"Not in the least, but the reason for the outrage is that for most of the last century these people had been repressed by dictators. Anyone who attempted to speak out was killed or imprisoned. Any protestors were tortured. Everything was stolen from the people. Everything, but their religion, and this they will not let Islam be defiled, because it is the last of their freedom." It was a simplistic rationale for the murderous attack on the Libyan embassy, but my feeling was a hunch. "What we have to ask is who made this film and what did they have to gain by showing it on 9/11?"

"Who did it?" She really wanted to know.

"Not anyone they said did it." The name Sam Basile had been mentioned in every first report from the CIA. There was no Sam Basile and Osama Bin Ladin hadn’t been involved in 9/11, but I keep that to myself, since everyone believed the lie. “I think the person with the most to gain____"

"I got to run. Here comes my sister." Now it was Andy's turn to cut me off.

"You have a good New Year."

"I will." She airsmacked a kiss to the mouthpiece and I ended the call. Nobody had invited me to blow the shofur or the lamb's horn, so I was head down to Frank's Lounge on Fulton Streetfor a beer. It was my home away from home and everyone there was family.

Same as was Andy.

It's a small world after all.

The Wall Of Unfreedom - 2014

The Berlin Wall was erected in 1961 by the East German Communist regime to prevent its citizens from fleeing the repressive Soviet-led government. The concrete barrier was constructed was constructed with 45,000 separate sections of reinforced concrete, each 3.6 metros (12 ft) high and 1.2 metros (3.9 ft) wide, and cost DDM 16,155,000 or about US$3,638,000 according to Wikipedia.

In 1982 I visited Berlin. The Wall or Antifaschistischer Schutzwall was a must-see for tourists. Henri Flesh, a Paris DJ, and I stood atop a viewing platform. A death zone lay beyond the wall brimming with mines and surveyed by assassin snipers. In 1982 one person was killed by the border guards. His name was Lothar Fritz Freie. He was shot in a restricted area.

The Berlin Wall fell with the collapse of the USSR in 1989, however in recent years the Zionist government of Israel has built a greater wall to protect themselves from the wrath of the Palestinians. The West Bank Barrier is much taller and thicker than the Berlin Wall. Its path cuts across the Occupied Territories with the express purpose of seizing more land for the creation of settlements for right-wing settlers dedicated to the expulsion or extermination of any non-Zionist population.

The British built a similar wall to preserve the Lost Provinces on Ireland.

They failed to prevent the rise of the IRA.

Same as the wall failed for the USSR or the Border Patrol on the Mexican border.

People flow like water and freedom of movement is the way of the world.

Free Palestine. Free Ulster. Free the world.

Ryōkan Taigu DEWDROPS ON A LOTUS BLOSSOM

Returning to my native village after many years’ absence: Ill, I put up at a country inn and listen to the rain. One robe, one bowl is all I have. I light incense and strain to sit in meditation; All night a steady drizzle outside the dark window— Inside, poignant memories of these long years of pilgrimage.

Ryōkan Taigu was a quiet and unconventional Sōtō Zen Buddhist monk who lived much of his life as a hermit. Ryōkan is remembered for his poetry and calligraphy, which present the essence of Zen life. - wikipedia

This spring I found his book DEWDROPS ON A LOTUS BLOSSOM on a brownstone's steps in Clinton Hill and read

Who says my poems are poems? My poems are not poems. When you know that my poems are not poems, Then we can speak of poetry!

World Wide Destruction

As the world skids out of control with the Endless War penetrating every corner of the globe, a Jewish friend texted that he expected an imminent nuclear exchange, because of The Gaza War.

I had been born with the Caul, the placenta, wrapped around my head. Celts believe it gives you the vision.

Despite the frenzied havoc in Palestine my inner sight doesn't see such maddog destruction. Genocide maybe, but a world-wide holocaust no, but back in the 1970s I had several vivid dreams about nuclear bombs. Once in the East Village sirens sounded and everyone scrambled to the Astor Place Subway. A frenzied terrified scrum. I looked up. Saw the missile. White flash. Vaporized.

Second dream Moscow. Red Square. Sirens. Everyone filing orderly into the Metro. I look up. A missile. White flash.

The last was in the Nebraskan flatland. I was fucking this blonde. A schitzah. Sirens. She leapt up and dressed in a SAC blue uniform. Wished me luck, as she got into a B52 bound for the USSR. Mushroom clouds marched in my direction. A missile. White light.

I realized I had woken before the nuclear blast killed me.

I still see the bombs dropped on Manhattan crossing the East River Bridges, however never on my return to Brooklyn.

Lucky and I feel lucky now. As would someone who has survived the worst. The best is yet to come

Klaatu Barada Nikto

Isaac Asimov wrote the three laws of robotics in I ROBOT.

1.) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. 2.) A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3.) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.

The producers of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL ignored these edicts by granting the robot Gort the ability to destroy humanity for its sins against universal peace.

This week the powers of peace have been overwhelmed by the forces of war in the Middle East.

My friend Jorge wrote on facebook; Just to be clear, I think Israel has as much right to exist as the state of Palestine. I decry their bombing of Gaza, just as I do Palestinian attacks on Israel. I am not looking to ascribe blame in this convoluted scenario; I simply wish for innocent people and children to be spared. Naive as it may sound, I think all violent aggressors that cost innocent lives should be policed and boycotted by the UN and world-at-large over and above any political affiliations. If world-government accord enforced such stipulations, aggressors would have to cease or face sanctions and embargo. Of course that would leave much of the world, including the US, penalized. Enter Gort!

Klaatu barada nikto.

One friend posted; Its all so fucking stupid...after all this time what is the fucking point? And I entered the fray by writing; The point is that these two sides have grievances. Palestinian land was stolen by the Israelis to make up from their treatment at the hands of the Nazis. Peace cannot exist without truth." Jorge argued not without a passion for peace, "The new point is to cease returning to historical causes and justifications and to start unanimously denouncing all violent acts. Otherwise, we are caught in an endless cycle." I countered, "The historical causes must be addressed to sate the need for both justice and equality. The truth will out." Our mutual friend Merrill enjoined the discussion with the following entry. "Somebody in a forum I was arguing with about this said the reason Palestine was chosen to repatriate Jews was because they were part of the Ottoman Empire and sided with the Germans during the war. I don't see why that would not warrant the Jews to be settled in Germany though, but I always wondered why Palestine was chosen...why did they draw the short straw? This seems to be all about real estate, plain and simple. I have the impression that the Palestinians are like the American Indians, handshake deals, not keen on "owning" the land, so not able to negotiate rights later on when Israel wants to paper their way over ownership. In that way it is also a culture clash, a difference of relating to owning things. Very sad. Israel seems greedy." I agreed with Merrill by writing, "Someone cited that the Ottoman Empire sided with the Germans. That was in WWI, but the Arabs revolted against the Turks only to be screwed by the Filthy Brits and Frogs. Of course history is written by the victors and revised periodically to suit the purposes of repression. There were no palestinians at Dachau." And as Patricia Neal said in THE DAY EARTH STOOD STILL, "Gort, Klaatu barada nikto." There is no translation to this phrase, but Gort stopped his destruction of the planet. If only it were so easy for us, we could clap our hands like when we watched PETER PAN and say, "Klaatu barada nikto." It has to meant something

Kill For The Sake Of Cali

GUNGA DIN was one of my favorite movies as a child. The cinematic version of Rudyard Kipling's poem about an untouchable bisthi or water carrier had elephants, fakirs, religious fanatics, comedy, thrills, and the horror of the Thuggees, who killed the innocent for their multi-armed goddess, Cali. "Swear by our mother Kali to be thrice faithful to her and to me and to our order and to all of us. Rise, our new-made brothers. Rise and kill. Kill, lest you be killed yourselves. Kill for the love of killing. Kill for the love of Kali! Kill! Kill! Kill!"

I always found this murderous request chilling, but mankind hasn't changed a lick since the release of 1939 GUNGA DIN.

The Taliban murdered over a hundred schoolchildren in Pakistan, a Louisiana mother killed her babies, Israel's IDF slaughtered hundreds of Gazans during the summer, a madman shot two cops in NY, the cops killed more, and it keeps on going on and on and on without cessation.

The horror.

As Joseph Conrad wrote in THE HEART OF DARKNESS.

"The horror."

Marlon Brando rumbled the words in APOCALYPSE NOW.

All I want is a little peace.

Is that too much to ask from the world.

One day.

And here's the end of GUNGA DIN.

The water boy has been shot and is dying.

A sergeant speaks over his body.

So I'll meet 'im later on At the place where 'e is gone -- Where it's always double drill and no canteen; 'E'll be squattin' on the coals Givin' drink to poor damned souls, An' I'll get a swig in hell from Gunga Din! Yes, Din! Din! Din! You Lazarushian-leather Gunga Din! Though I've belted you and flayed you, By the livin' Gawd that made you, You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din

Hypocrisy Of The Endless War

A bomber struck a Ariana Grande concert in Manchester.

Over twenty young people were killed by the explosion.

The destruction was horrific.

Young innocents.

Dead.

Why?

Israel attacking a Palestine beach.

Yemeni children killed by a drone missile strike ordered by Obama.

Bloody Sunday by the Brits.

When will there be peace.

Bad Week In Bad America

America was shocked by the brutal double-killing of Alton Sterling by a Baton Rouge police officer. 911 had received a gun call from someone at the convenience store where Sterling sold CDs. the illegal gun in Sterling's possession had been purchased for protection. The two police rolled into the parking lot and attempted an arrest, knocking Sterling to the sidewalk.

One shouted out, "He has a gun."

It was not in his hands.

The incident was recorded by cellphone.

It might not be judge and jury, but the video clearly shows the police officer shooting Sterling point-blank in the chest.

The father of two died on the scene.

Another black man, Philando Castile, was murdered by a Minneapolis cop after he declared he was legally carrying a weapon on him. His girlfriend recorded the killing on her phone. The police took her and her daughter into custody.

This was murder in the second degree.

No accident.

People were outraged.

The Bahamanian government issued a travel warning to its citizens.

Protests called for justice.

In Dallas at a Black Lives Matter march a single gunman, Micah Johnson, attacked white police officer with an automatic weapon. The ex-soldier killed 5 and wounded 7. The police stopped his revenge rampage with a drone robot bomb.

It was obvious that America had reached a tipping point with the police killers on one side and blacks on another.

The protests continued with a large march in Baton Rouge.

The police riot squads responded with excessive force.

Typically in military gear and ready to revenge the fallen officers.

This photo shows the difference between the people and the police.

Same as Tank Man in Beijing 1989

Or the peacenik protesting against the Viet-Nam War at the Pentagon in 1967.

All we are saying is give peace a chance.

ps a gunman got John Lennon too.

It was a bad week in America, but it's always darkest before the storm.

Meir Kahane Is Dead

This weekend I petitioned passers-by at the General Fowler Triangle in Fort Greene. Blacks were eager to sign. White people shook their head, when asked to sign a petition asking Congress and President Obama to support a ceasefire in Gaza. Hamas' resumption of its missile attacks reminds too many New Yorkers of 9/11 and the dangers of Islamic fundamentalism. Their statements about Hamas using human shields and accusations of anti-Semitism came straight from the Western Media without any consideration for the injustice caused by the foundation of Israel.

Hamas is evil.

Israel is defending itself.

A Russian Jewish friend walked by the triangle.

"I can't believe you're supporting terrorists."

"No, I'm supporting an end to the fighting." I quoted Michael Jackson's line from BEAT IT. "I don't care who's wrong or right. All I want is peace."

"Meir Kahane said we can never be at peace with the Arabs." Mike was a young man. We knew each other from 47th Street. He bought gold. I sold diamonds.

"Meir Kahane?" I hadn't heard the name of the JDL's assassinated leader in ages.

"Yes, Kahane argued against the two-state solution, since the Arabs could outbreed the Jews."

"I recollect his saying that the Arabs should be forcibly deported from Biblical Israel."

"It's the only solution."

"You mean like a Final Solution?" This adoption of the Nazi policy against the Palestinians was too ironic for my tastes.

"It's us or them."

"But not the two."

"Never two."

"I don't think the USA will support that measure."

"That's naive. The Arabs don't care what happens to the Palestinians and neither does the USA. Only Israelis care about them and the only way to end the war is to end Palestine."

"A pogram?"

"They threw us out of North Africa by the hundreds of thousands."

"After letting the Jew live amongst them for centuries."

"Everything comes to an end. Good and bad." Mike walked away toward Atlantic Terminal.

"Sie gesund."

"Ed, the head of Brooklyn Peace Intiative came over to me and asked, "What was that about?"

"Meir Kahane."

"Meir Kahane. He was a friend of Bob Dylan and he instructed Arlo Guthrie on the Torah."

"He did?"

"Yes, but he's dead since the 90s. He was shot at a hotel. Supposedly the first al-Qaada attack, but the killer wasn't convicted of murder."

"Why not?"

"CIA?" Ed shrugged and we returned to petitioning the pedestrians.

None of them were Meir Kahane. He was dead.

Only people on their way home or Frank's Lounge or Mullane's or Mo's or la Habana.

Life was good in Brooklyn.

It wasn't Gaza.

Green Everywhere Around Israel

After WW2 hundreds of thousands of Jews sought refuge in Palestine joining the thousands of their religious kinsmen who had fled the pograms of Czarist Russia. This influx of refugees swelled the small British Mandate, so that by 1948 32% of the population of nearly two million people were Jewish, yet the UN resolution awarded over half the land to the newcomers, who seized even more territory after their decisive victories against the Arabs in 1948, 1956, 1967, and 1973 as well as occupying major portions of the West Bank and Gaza to quell any rebellion against Israel. Americans tend to think that Israel has existed forever, however since the Romans conquered the Hebrews no Jewish state existed for almost 2000 years. We have seen countless movies about the struggle to establish a homeland for a people persecuted by the Nazis almost to the point of extinction. Our sympathies were heightened by the romanticism of EXODUS. No president has ever really spoken out against the apartheid democracy and my fellow Americans consider all Arabs as terrorists as evinced by this facebook entry by my cousin Kim "I'm worried about Israel...there will never be peace but hopefully a cease fire. McCain calling for Bill Clinton to go in. Anyone that is willing to cross boarders with a bomb strapped to their chest is a dangerous zealot. No Israeli would do such an act. Beyond war into terrorism. Golda Meir said the conflict would end when the Arabs love their children with the same intensity that they love their children..below a map. Israel is surrounded by enemies. Kim posted the above map showing an Israel wrapped by green. I responded as follows; "Israel put itself in that situation when they stole the land from the palestinians. How many palestinians were at Dachau? Zero. As for the terrorists with a 10lb bomb strapped to them, what about the US made F-16s strapped with 1000 pound bombs. Oh, I forgot that's precision bombing. Fuck an eye for an eye. All I want to say to the two parties is what Grace Slick said at Altamont, "Calm down people." addendum ps on a geographical note Israel has four neighbors and the sea. Then again Americans aren't too good with geography. Kim, I'm glad you have GPS or else you couldn't find your way to Starbucks Her friend Jay jumped into the discussion, "Let's all relive history and make Israel the bad guy again. After all it worked so well last time... NOT!" Kimberly wasn't amused either. Zealots on both sides have no sense of humor, "I shall always love Israel, and what it stands for..Jews persecuted for centuries..shit on for all time..mass graves...gas...six million slain as they whisper the one hope: Israel..the promised land. Yesterday at 3:44pm · Like "Once more there were no Palestinians at Dachau. Love an ideal, do not support apartheid." I wasn't leaving her with the last word. Or at least that's what I thought. Kim. "Hamas is a terrorist organization. The Muslim brotherhood is a terrorist organization. No need to talk down to me. Apartheid. REALLY? We will have to agree to disagree. I tried to reason, "This is all a shadow play at the cost of lives. The plot cannot be seen by those unprepared to challenge the lies of politicians, media, and perception. All is not what it seems, but you know what you've been taught to know. There are no other options when you don't question the truth. Kim: "What, are you in the CIA? LOL" "No, but I know what happened. Over the past months parties within Hamas, Israel, and Egypt pursued a peace pact. The proposal was handed to Ahmed Jabari and hardliners within Hamas snitched him out to an equally obdurate faction within the IDF, who ended all peace prospects with a drone attack. Of course this is all a hunch based on Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, but then all life is an imitation of art." "Unleash the dogs of war." - General Chang Klingon commander I love Star Trek.
