Songkran Traffic Mayhem 2008

Driving back from Bangkok on Thursday I thought about detouring off the Asia Highway to visit the ruins of Ayutthaya, then traffic got very sluggish, as rubberneckers gawked at a pick-up truck, which had flipped over the concrete barriers into the center strip. Blood was smeared on the shattered windscreen. A body laid on the grass covered with a sheet. The driver was one of the first sacrifice to the devourer of souls. The Songkran Traffic Festival.

Last year's DOAs number close to 900.

Traffic cops are out in force to stop people from drinking and driving. I saw at least several of them in Chainat drinking Leo beer instead of the old wifebeater Chang Beer. One of them said, "Mai mao."

By his boots were a good dozen empties.

Best wishes to those driving. Keep on the road.
