Thailand reprieves Nigerian Drug Dealers' Death Sentence

Thailand carries a mandatory death sentence for drug-related offences and 23 Nigerians threatened with lethal injections were reprieved thanks to meetings between representatives of the Thia and Nigerian governments.

The death sentences were commuted to life which will be served in their native country.

Prison in Thailand or prison in Nigeria.

Nigerian prisons have no toilets and the cells no water. Food is lacking so malnutrition is part of the health regime. Torture is endemic and many prisoners commit suicide to escape from 113 year-old main prison. Nearly 65% of prisoners are awaiting trial, so overcrowding is another challenge for the penal system.

Thai prisons are only a little better. Food is enough to live on, but the facilities are seriously overcrowded and jailers are extremely cruel. Still if you have a little money, then you can live better than the other inmates.

I reckon none of the Nigerians will opt to remain in Thailand.

Not that they have a choice.

Of course there was no mention of the more than 200 other Nigerians in the Thai prison system.
